Bag om Indian Diaspora in the United States
India is being hailed as an "emerging" power, but what we are really witnessing is a re-emergence. Before the 18th century, India was a dominant player in the world economy. At their peak, India and China together accounted for close to 50 per cent of world GDP. Today, it is the interplay of democracy, demography and the Indian diaspora that makes the story of re-emergence significant. The Indian diaspora in the United States is highly organized, and is represented by a count-less number of well funded and professionally managed groups. Many members of the Indian diaspora have deep, positive, and multifaceted forms of engagement with India. The Government of India has created many programs and initiatives that aim to encourage and amplify the diasporäs contributions. Our study shows that the Indian diaspora is a highly educated and economically successful population that has integrated well in the United States while maintaining their Indian identity and strong ties with its homeland. The majority of diaspora organizations are culturally based groups suggesting that preserving Indian identity and traditions are highly valued by members of this community.
