Martin Eden is a novel written by American author Jack London, first published in 1909. He becomes determined to better himself and win her affection, and begins to educate himself through reading and writing. As Martin's writing improves, he becomes successful and gains recognition, but he also becomes increasingly isolated from his former friends and family. Martin struggles with his own identity and the class differences between himself and Ruth, leading to a tragic ending.
