Bag om Peter the Whaler
The author of "Peter the Whaler" William Henry Giles Kingston, was born in 1814 at London. Much of earlier part of his life was passed in Portugal, however, his father's business being at Porto. He began his careern not as a writer of tales, but as a writer for the papers. His articles on Portugal, which were translated into Portuguese, helped to bring about the friendly treaty with Portugal in 1842. This gained him a Portuguese knighthood and a pension. His first books were writter abroad; it was not till after he had taken up his abode in England and had been living there for some time that he began his long series of book and anual for boys . His stories run to over a hundred. "Peter the Whaler" (1851), one of the best known, was also one of the earliest. Kingston wrote hundreds of books, among them are his sea-tales, story-books, books of travel, known translations of Juves Verne novels and editions of various boys magazines.
