A report entitled ¿Road Safety in India: Challenges and Opportunities¿ March 2009 states that road traffic fatalities have been increasing at about 8% annually for the last ten years. About 60% of all fatalities in urban areas belong to pedestrians. Hence pedestrian safety is a challenge for transport planners, traffic engineers, town planners, urban local bodies and policy makers to make the city safer.
