Kate Steele has just left her last destination - the beautiful Hawaiian islands. She is a young Canadian woman, who is traveling with a group of missionaries into the former Soviet Union, to work in an orphanage.
She is completely fascinated by Russia, a country that has always seemed so isolated from the rest of the world. Towards the end of their stay, she falls head over heels in love with Max, a good-looking Russian man.
The couple reunite in Moscow one year later to the day they had said goodbye.
The young couple enjoy a whirlwind romance, culminating in Max's proposal. With a bright future ahead the couple could not be happier.
However, as time moves on she begins to see Max evolve into a different person, questioning their life together.
