""The Man in Black"" is a historical novel by Stanley J. Weyman, first published in 1894. The story is set in 17th century France, during the reign of Louis XIV, and follows the adventures of a young nobleman named Jean de Marsac. After being falsely accused of a crime, Marsac is forced to flee from Paris and take on a new identity as the mysterious ""Man in Black."" He becomes embroiled in a plot to overthrow the king's minister, and must use all his wit and cunning to survive and clear his name. Along the way, he meets a cast of colorful characters, including a beautiful actress and a cunning spy. The novel is full of swashbuckling action, political intrigue, and romance, and is considered a classic of historical fiction.The other men, gathering round, glared at the boy hungrily. In the middle of the Forest of Bondy he could not have been more at their mercy than he was in this quiet corner of the market, where a velvet coat with silver buttons was as rare a sight as a piece of the true cross. Two or three houseless wretches looked on from their frowsy lairs under the stalls, but no one dreamed of interfering with the men in possession.
