In The Narrative of an Explorer in Tropical South Africa (1883), Sir Francis Galton describes an expedition he led to Southwest Africa in the 1850s. This expedition was a watershed event in the author's life. Because Galton was among the first to explore this South African territory, the effort earned him a Gold Medal from the Royal Geographical Society and launched his career as a scientist.
