Children with complex needs--ADHD, anxiety, autism, depression, learning disabilities, Tourette syndrome, and others--face a number of common difficulties in some aspects of life and learning. Elaine Taylor-Klaus, expert and mother of three young people with complex needs, has created this essential guide designed to accompany and inspire mothers and fathers who are confused, exhausted or desperate. The great success of this book compared to other works on the subject is due to the fact that the author approaches it from a different place, training adults in the various areas of conflict so that they are the ones who empower their children from the perspective of a coach, with full confidence in their chances of becoming independent and brilliant adults. It is a collaborative model, adaptable to different problems, which offers guidelines for creating new structures and dynamics at home, setting realistic expectations, improving relationships or working on motivation based on self-reflection proposals and action-oriented solutions.

"Our climate crisis is resulting in more frequent and more intense extreme weather events. The US population is aging (by 2034, the US will have more people over 65 than under 18). Older adults often have challenges in preparing for and responding to a disaster (limited mobility, cognitive challenges, financial and housing instability) that the disaster management and health-care communities are not prepared to address, in spite of the evidence that older adults are disproportionately affected by natural disasters. There is very little written about the intersection of these trends. It is precisely this challenge - understanding how the many dimensions of vulnerability intersect with and compound climate impacts on older adults - that is at the heart of this book. Danielle argues that we cannot achieve true resilience until communities adopt interventions that work to meet the needs of their oldest. The book explores how older adults experience climate-related risk, why resilience interventions look different when designed with the needs of older adults in mind, and how to integrate age-friendly resilience into community planning and disaster preparedness efforts. The author draws from her experience in hazard planning and leading the livable communities program at AARP to make a strong case for prioritizing the needs of our most vulnerable citizens. She provides practical steps and some examples of what is being done at all levels of government and by NGOs. While there are examples sprinkled throughout the book, the chapter on models takes a more in depth look at New York State; Portland, Oregon and Multnomah County; and New Orleans"-- Provided by publisher.

From Olympic gold medalist and two-time professional basketball MVP A'ja Wilson comes an inspirational collection on what it means to grow up as a Black girl in America. This is a book for all the girls with an apostrophe in their name. This is for all the girls who are "too loud" and "too emotional."This is for all the girls who are constantly asked, "Oh, what did you do with your hair? That's new."This is for my Black girls. In this empowering and deeply personal collection-adapted from and expanded upon the piece of the same name in The Players' Tribune-WNBA star A'ja Wilson shares stories from her life. Despite gold medals, championships, and a list of accolades, Wilson knows how it feels to be swept under the rug. To not be heard, to not feel seen, to not be taken seriously. As a fourth grader going to a primarily white school in South Carolina, she was told she'd have to stay outside for a classmate's birthday party. "Huh?" she asked. Because the birthday girl's father didn't like Black people.Wilson tells stories like this: stories that held her down but didn't stop her. She shares her contribution to "The Talk," and how to keep fighting, all while igniting strength, resilience, and passion. Dear Black Girls is one remarkable author's necessary and meaningful exploration of what it means to be a Black woman in America today-and an of-the-moment rally cry to lift up women and girls everywhere.
In Confronting the Racist Legacy of the American Child Welfare System, Alan J. Dettlaff presents a call to abolish the American child welfare system due to the harm and destruction it causes Black families. Dettlaff provides evidence of the vast harms that result from family separations and placement in foster care to make a case that the child welfare system is beyond reform. Rather, the only solution to ending this harm is complete abolition of the child welfare system and a fundamental reimagining of the way society cares for children and families.
