The three texts brought together in Listening with All Our Senses offer a new perspective for those supporting people with ASD and/or profound and multiple learning disabilities. Phoebe Caldwell emphasises the importance of shifting the focus away from the label of 'challenging behaviour' and instead offers practical advice for ways that we can help to alleviate the distress that may be at the root of such behaviours, by communicating with people on their own terms and in their own 'language'. She uses multiple case studies from her years of experience in the field to illustrate Intensive Interaction and the innovative techniques that she has developed for entering the person's world, as they experience it, and approaching two-way communication from this perspective. The compendium includes a new introduction written by Phoebe Caldwell, and You Don't Know What It's Like also features an updated 'GP's viewpoint' provided by Dr Matt Hoghton.
Dyslexic: My Journey offers a wealth of information and hope for parents of learning-disabled children.Dyslexic is the remarkable story of Mike Balzano, an undiagnosed learning-disabled child of working class immigrants whose antisocial behavior earned him the name "Crazy Mikey." Failing at everything, he became a garbage collector until crippled by a back injury. He then entered an optical apprenticeship that turned his life around. He earned a high school diploma, graduated from a university magna cum laude, and earned a PhD with distinction from Georgetown University. Balzano believes that the apprenticeship gave him the discipline and self-confidence to begin his journey. He urges parents, teachers, school counselors, and superintendents to expand their current focus of promoting college careers to include promoting careers that require apprenticeships.Dyslexic includes the testimonies of parents who chose different approaches to address the learning disabilities of their children, and appendices where parents can find help. Balzano's story illustrates that with the appropriate education or training, young people can capture the American Dream.
"Nelson use to think school was all about playing around and talking with his friends. When Nelson learns that he has been placed in Special Education, he fears being teased. Consequently, he keeps his learning disability and ADHD diagnosis a secret. With the encouragement of his parents and assistance from Mrs. T., his Special Education teacher, Nelson pushes the boundaries and discovers his potential"--Page 4 of cover.
The Dan the Fish Series of children's books is a collaborative effort of many people who dealt with learning and physical issues in school. The books are divided into three parts. The first is a story about an animal that has a problem similar to those that children with disabilities face every day. The second part is a reflection from a child's perspective. The third part is a brief introduction of the adult who helped inspire the story. The purpose of the books is to inspire all children to be who they are. Presented in a creative manner, the Dan the Fish Series hopes to show kids that there are others like them, who felt like they do, and that they too can overcome their challenges and difficulties. These books can also be used as discussion starters in the classroom, for those in teaching programs and anyone working with people with disabilities. Our hope is that this series will bring understanding, encourage compassion, and help to end bullying of all children.
Diagnosis of learning disabilities or autism can happen at any point in an individual's life. While this should mean freedom to move forward with information to access all that's needed to live a fulfilling and rewarding life, the huge obstacles that exist in reality can make a diagnosis a cause for dismay. Furthermore, the way in which the diagnosis is delivered is often done without thought or preparation and consequently ensures lasting emotional trauma to the individuals involved and their loved ones. The aim of this thought-provoking booklet is to directly challenge the method and moment a diagnosis is given, so that it can become the defining opportunity to set individuals and their families off on a positive, hopeful path rather than a negative, diminished one. Each 'rule' speaks powerfully with the voice of the individual or family on the receiving end of diagnosis. Together, the 10 rules provide a useful starting point for discussion and a catalyst for action. Each is followed by suggestions for positive practices. The booklet also contains additional background information on good practice, together with references and sources of further information. The booklet has been written for anyone involved in providing diagnoses and follow-up support to autistic people, those with learning disabilities and their families, together with allied professionals, carers and student in relevant disciplines. It can be used for a wide range of purposes, including staff induction, learning disability and autism awareness training, individual professional development and reflection, and team discussions about the quality of practice and services provided.
Games and activities that help children with a learning disability strengthen their processing deficits such as memory, auditory processing, processing speed, visual processing, logic and executive functioning.

When parents are told their child has a learning disability, they need more information. Thinking Differently is just the resource to meet that need. David Flink, leader of Eye to Eye, a national mentoring program for children with learning differences, explains each learning disability in layman's terms to prepare parents to speak knowledgeably with teachers about their child's specific challenges. Thinking Differently will not overwhelm parents with legal jargon, but it will guide them through what laws are on their side and what they can insist that schools provide for their child. With compassion and hope, Flink describes the importance of testing and diagnosis to equip parents with the tools they need to advocate authoritatively on their child's behalf and to seek the most effective accommodations?from technology to extra time and medication?to guarantee that their child succeeds in school and life. In this eye-opening book, David Flink helps parents understand what their child is experiencing. He also emphasizes the importance of maintaining and building children's self-esteem, by helping them discover inner gifts and special talents and realize they are as smart as anyone?even if they think differently.
