During World War II, navies developed camouflage for their ships. Applying it to both vertical and horizontal surfaces, they reduced visibility and confused the identities of their ships to the enemy. Maritime artist Malcolm Wright, author of popular books on British naval camouflage schemes in World War II, now turns his attention to the ships and aircraft of the Imperial Japanese Navy and Army from 1932 to 1945. The 'Jack Tars' at war in the Mediterranean, the desert and along the River NileThere is an abiding interest among historians and students of the military campaigns of the Victorian era in the activities of the Naval Brigades of the Royal Navy. There had been comparatively few occasions since Trafalgar and until the First World War when battle fleets could be engaged. However, the crews of the navy could be always be depended upon to perform on land in a manner equal to their reputation afloat. Accordingly, Naval Brigades were deployed in many of Britain's small imperial wars of the 19th century. The special Leonaur book offers the reader virtually everything that could be wished for in that respect, because it covers the activities of sailors on land during the Egyptian War of 1882 and in the later battles against the Mahdists and the attempt to relieve Khartoum in the Sudan. Wilson's account, as told by Bradford, includes a riveting description of the first stages of the campaign in the desert and the fierce fighting which almost resulted in destruction for the British force at El-Teb. Wilson was,of course, central to this action as the Gardner gun failed and the courageous enemy broke into the British square. Wing Commander Eric Benjamin was no stranger to danger or excitement. In an action-packed career as part of the RAF Volunteer Reserve (RAFVR), he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross twice for his bravery under fire. He flew Fairey Battles with No. 150 Squadron during the Battle of France, Main Force Avro Lancasters with No. 61 Squadron during the Battle of Berlin, and De Havilland Mosquitoes as an elite Pathfinder Master Bomber in the latter stages of the war. He survived being shot down on his first operation, when his air gunner was severely wounded, and was among the last RAF aircrew to be evacuated from France in the summer of 1940. He was pulled clear of the mangled wreckage of a Vickers Wellington that crashed in flames during a spell as an instructor, narrowly escaping with his life for a second time, and 'starred' as a Flight Commander interviewed for Pathé News after a successful raid on Berlin in 1943. Towards the end of 1944, he achieved his ambition of flying Mosquitoes, and was selected and trained as a Master Bomber, operating as part of No. 54 Base in No. 5 Group and helping to mop up what was left of German industry and military might. It was from one of these sorties that his aircraft failed to return.Authored by Sean Feast and Eric's daughter Jeannie, the book includes numerous previously unpublished photographs of Eric, his colleagues, and the aircraft he flew. An inveterate letter writer, Eric once said of flying that there was 'no greater sport'. He died as he had lived, doing what he loved best.

Con il terzo volume che completerà il nostro lavoro sulle artiglierie italiane dei primi cinquanta anni del Novecento tratteremo prevalentemente i mezzi di concezione più moderna, ideati dalla seconda metà degli anni '30. Da questo volume invece parleremo espressamente anche delle bombarde in uso in quegli anni, mentre trattrici e trattori saranno distribuiti in vario modo nei tre volumi in ordine preferibilmente cronologico.
