WHAT'S MINE IS YOURS is about Collaborative Consumption, a new, emerging economy made possible by online social networks and fueled by increasing cost consciousness and environmental necessity. Collaborative Consumption occurs when people participate in organized sharing, bartering, trading, renting, swapping, and collectives to get the same pleasures of ownership with reduced personal cost and burden, and lower environmental impact. The book addresses three growing models of Collaborative Consumption: Product Service Systems, Communal Economies, and Redistribution Markets. The first, Product Service Systems, reflects the increasing number of people from all different backgrounds and across ages who are buying into the idea of using the service of the product-what it does for them-without owning it. Examples include Zipcar and Ziploc, and these companies are disrupting traditional industries based on models of individual ownership. Second, in what the authors define as Communal Economies, there is a growing realization that as individual consumers, we have relatively little in the way of bargaining power with corporations. A crowd of consumers, however, introduces a different, empowering dynamic. Online networks are bringing people together again and making them more willing to leverage the proverbial power of numbers. Examples of this second category include Etsy, an online market for handcrafts, or the social lending marketplace Zopa. The third model is Redistribution Markets, exemplified by worldwide networks such as Freecycle and Ebay as well as emerging forms of modern day bartering and ?swap trading? such as Zwaggle, Swaptree, and Zunafish. Social networks facilitate consumer-to-consumer marketplaces that redistribute goods from where they are not needed to somewhere or someone where they are. This business model encourages reusing/reselling of old items rather them throwing them out, thereby reducing the waste and carbon emissions that go along with new production.WHAT'S MINE IS YOURS describes how these three models come together to form a new economy of more sustainable consumerism. Collaborative Consumption started as a trend in conjunction with the emergence of shared collective content/information sites such as Wikipedia and Flickr and with the recent economic troubles and increasing environmental awareness, it is growing into an international movement. The authors predict it will be a fully fledged economy within the next five years. In this book the authors travel among the quiet revolutionaries (consumers and companies) from all around the world. They explore how businesses will both prosper and fail in this environment, and, in particular, they examine how it has the potential to help create the mass sustainable change in consumer behaviors this planet so desperately needs. The authors themselves are environmentalists, but they are also entrepreneurs, parents, and optimistic citizens. This is a good news book about long-term positive change.
Since its creation a number of years ago, the World Wide Web has revolutionized the way entertainment, research and business are conducted in modern society. However, most of the current Web is conceived for human understanding whereas software applications or agents have no clue of the meaning of its content. The semantic Web, as an extension of the current Web and a vision, aims to bring structure for computer programs to "understand" and process. According to Tim Berners-Lee, in this vision, humans and machines will be able to work, reason and solve complex tasks in cooperation.Canadian Semantic Web contains the proceedings of the Canadian Semantic Web Working Symposium (CSWWS) 2006, the first major event in Canada on the theme of semantic Web. This event is the initiative of the Canadian Semantic Web Interest Group (SWIG) which gathers researchers supported by the Canadian Society for the Computational Studies of Intelligence(CSCSI). This text covers a variety of well known topics of interest to practitioners in industry and research scientists. The range of topics includes languages, tools and methodologies for the semantic Web, semantic Web-based ontology management and engineering, semantic Web services, practical applications of the semantic Web techniques, artificial intelligence methods and tools for the semantic Web, software agents on the semantic Web, visualization and modeling of the semantic Web. The goal of this book is to provide a state-of-the-art review of the research as well as to introduce topics of interest to experts.Mamadou Tadiou Koné is an Assistant Professor in computer science at Université Laval, Québec, Canada. Daniel Lemire is Professor at Télé-université, Université du Québec à Montréal (UQÀM), Canada.
A large number of information systems use many different individual schemas to represent data. Semantically linking these schemas is a necessary precondition to establish interoperability between agents and services. Consequently, ontology alignment and mapping for data integration has become central to building a world-wide semantic web.Ontology Alignment: Bridging the Semantic Gap introduces novel methods and approaches for semantic integration. In addition to developing new methods for ontology alignment, the author provides extensive explanations of up-to-date case studies. The topic of this book, coupled with the application-focused methodology, will appeal to professionals from a number of different domains.Designed for practitioners and researchers in industry, Ontology Alignment: Bridging the Semantic Web Gap is also suitable for advanced-level students in computer science and electrical engineering.
Digital Communities in a Networked Society: e-Commerce, e-Business and e-Government deals with the accelerating evolution in the computerization of society. This evolution, or should we call it a revolution, is dominantly driven by the Internet, and documented by the novelties introduced, year by year, by Information and Communication Technologies. The book contains recent results of research and development in the areas of: -E-government, -Business models of e-applications, -Innovative structures in the internet, -Auctions and e-payment, -Future aspects of communication, -Internet and the web, -Advanced platforms and grid computing, -Cooperation and integration, -Modeling and construction of e-services.
Design is an art form in which the designer selects from a myriad of alternatives to bring an "optimum" choice to a user. In many complex of "optimum" is difficult to define. Indeed, the users systems the notion themselves will not agree, so the "best" system is simply the one in which the designer and the user have a congruent viewpoint. Compounding the design problem are tradeoffs that span a variety of technologies and user requirements. The electronic business system is a classically complex system whose tradeoff criteria and user views are constantly changing with rapidly developing underlying technology. Professor Milutinovic has chosen this area for his capstone contribution to the computer systems design. This book completes his trilogy on design issue in computer systems. His first work, "Surviving the Design of a 200 MHz RISC Microprocessor" (1997) focused on the tradeoffs and design issues within a processor. His second work, "Surviving the Design of Microprocessor and Multiprocessor Systems" (2000) considers the design issues involved with assembling a number of processors into a coherent system. Finally, this book generalizes the system design problem to electronic commerce on the Internet, a global system of immense consequence.
With his knowing eye and wicked pen, Michael Lewis reveals how the Internet boom has encouraged changes in the way we live, work, and think. In the midst of one of the greatest status revolutions in the history of the world, the Internet has become a weapon in the hands of revolutionaries. Old priesthoods are crumbling. In the new order, the amateur is king: fourteen-year-olds manipulate the stock market and nineteen-year-olds take down the music industry. Unseen forces undermine all forms of collectivism, from the family to the mass market: one black box has the power to end television as we know it, and another one may dictate significant changes in our practice of democracy. With a new afterword by the author.
This book presents a typical rural Zimbabwe setting among communities at each other¿s throats due land ownership wrangles created by the Fast Track Land Reform Programme, dubbed ¿Jambanjä, a local term referring to a chaotic situation due to the chaotic unfolding of the land reform. The research-based book presents conflicts involving returning Ndebele-speaking Insiza communities displaced by the Colonial government to Gokwe in Midlands province and self-resettled Shona-speaking Zimbabweans from neighbouring Shona-speaking Zvishavane community. Chief Jahana, who together with his approximately 16000 subjects displaced by colonial Rhodesian government¿s Land Apportionment; Tenure; and Husbandry Acts (1930s-1950s) return to find Chief Mazetese occupying their ancestral land, sparking recurrent potentially tribal and ethnocentric conflicts.
Strategic planning is a backbone support to strategic management and it is a major process in the conduct of strategic management. The importance of strategic planning can be explained from four points of view including environmental scanning, strategy formulation, and linking goals to budgets and strategic planning as a process. The main objective of the study was to assess strategic planning and its contribution to National Cement Share Company (NCSC) performance. \In this study, data was obtained through questionnaire and interactive interviews with 65 respondents respectively from top, middle and line managers and 2 top level managers as key informants. The study has investigated the practices and challenges in the course of designing, implementing and over sighting the plan in the ex-post implementation in order to approach the problem. However, results show that there was a gap in participating wider employees and stakeholders in the course of designing the plan. This study also shows that the implementation of the Strategic Plan has resulted in positive changes with regard to revenue collection, efficient service delivery and increased desire for qualified manpower.
As businesses face evolving challenges, four aspects of leadership willbecome dramatically more important: insight, integrity, courage, and agility. It may be that advancing technology plays the most visible role in shapingmanufacturing progress in the years ahead. But we believe that what will matter at least as much for manufacturing¿s future is something that¿s much less visible, even though it has long been the bedrock of performance: effective leadership. How individual leaders inspire and influence others will become a key differentiator between organizations that thrive and those that do not.In our experience transforming large, complex organizations at scale, the bulk of the work is usually in creating operational and managerial solutions. Yet we also know that nothing will happen, let alone sustain itself over time, without effective leadership. Indeed, extensive¿and remarkably quantitative¿research confirms that there are roughly 20 fundamental components of leadership that correlate closely to organizational performance.
The Internet of Things (IoT) may be the most disruptive set of technologies in a generation, and the most disruptive tech company in the world--Amazon--is building the IoT strategies that will influence every organization and sector. We can all learn from these strategies. In this detailed analysis of IoT and Amazon's and other leading companies approach to it, John Rossman guides readers with practical insights and recommendations into the strategies and mindset transforming business and society.

The quantitative expansion without adequate preparation and even the basic infrastructure has adversely affected the quality of management education. Hence there is an urgent need for developing a monitoring system for management education. To control the quality degradation in management education there should be a regular feedback from those who received management education as well as by the users of the product. a continuous dialogue with the users in public and private undertakings as well as in the academic field would serve a dual purpose of having a rapport with the users. Higher management education institutes need to take into account the importance of service quality dimensions such as reliability, responsiveness, assurance, empathy and tangibility. Customer service initiatives are, thus closely related to quality improvement initiatives. The strategy to consistently deliver superior service quality is a key for institutes to position themselves more effectively in this very competitive industry. The B-schools should assess service quality regularly as service quality perception of students are always changing.
