We need to act five times faster to tackle climate change before it is too late. A policy insider, Simon Sharpe provides compelling ideas on how to rethink our strategies and reorganise our efforts in the fields of science, diplomacy, and economics to speed up progress in addressing climate change.
Få overblik over maritime retsforhold.Sørettens område spænder vidt fra privatretlige over offentligretlige til folkeretlige regler. Hans Jacob Bull, begge tilknyttet Institutt for Sjørett, universitetet i Olso.
For intet mindre end ekpyrosis, verdens totale undergang i ild, truer.
Climate Liberalism examines the potential and limitations of classical-liberal approaches to pollution control and climate change. Some successful environmental strategies, such as the use of catch-shares for fisheries, instream water rights, and tradable emission permits, draw heavily upon the classical liberal intellectual tradition and its emphasis on property rights and competitive markets. This intellectual tradition has been less helpful, to date, in the development or design of climate change policies. Climate Liberalism aims to help fill the gap in the academic literature examining the extent to which classical-liberal principles, including an emphasis on property rights, decentralized authority and dynamic markets, can inform the debate over climate-change policies. The contributors in this book approach the topic from a range of perspectives and represent multiple academic disciplines. Chapters consider the role of property rights and common-law legal systems in controlling pollution, the extent to which competitive markets backed by legal rules encourage risk minimization and adaptation, and how to identify the sorts of policy interventions that may help address climate change in ways that are consistent with liberal values.
This textbook introduces and explains the issues around climate change and its mitigation. It includes topics across disciplines and can be used as a single-volume text by students studying a range of subjects. Among the topics included are: ·How to adopt significant mitigation measures now to avoid the most catastrophic long-term consequences of climate change.·Reducing the rates of highly potent, short-lived emissions of methane gas and black carbon particulates¿reductions that are necessary to meet the temperature targets of the Paris Agreements.·Implementing wide-ranging adaptation measures to reduce the deaths and economic costs of extreme heat waves, droughts, wildfires, hurricanes, and floods.·Recognizing the unusually rapid warming in the Arctic, which is disrupting weather patterns in the northern hemisphere and currents in the Atlantic Ocean, causing world-wide sea-level rise, and also causing methane leaks in the Arctic region¿leaksthat could eventually lead to irreversible global warming consequences. Meeting these challenges effectively requires action by both governments and businesses. The book examines the national and local governmental policies¿and business practices¿that are needed in sector-specific chapters. An objective of the book is to inform readers about specific problems resulting from climate change¿and the wide range of potential government policies and business practices, changes in technologies, and changes in public attitudes and actions that can reduce the emissions and otherwise lessen their impacts. Indeed, a central message is that understanding the issues posed by climate change requires no less than an understanding of climate science, micro- and macro-economics, technologies for mitigation and adaptation measures, as well as politics and law at many governmental levels from local to global. The author has included short case studies that illustrate and integrate multiple analytic perspectives. The book is therefore appropriate for students, professionals, and general audiences with wide-ranging interests and backgrounds.
From the 1972 Stockholm Declaration to the European Union's Green Deal, the principles of international environmental law have successfully permeated the multilateral discourse. They are also woven into a large patchwork of international treaties, binding the international community and requiring their implementation at the domestic level. This materials collection provides an edited compilation of international and European environmental law documents. Alongside the fundamentals as well as the procedural and liability frameworks, it includes a selection of the most relevant sectoral treaties relating to air, ozone, climate, freshwater, oceans, biodiversity, and hazardous substances.
Future Food Systems: Exploring Global Production, Processing, Distribution and Consumption provides an overview of food systems, from farming through to logistics, processing, retail, service and consumption, with the intention of enabling more efficient development of policy and implementation of food related practices. The book presents the considerations which must be understood to develop effective and efficient policies and practices for any level of food system and along the continuum of those systems, with attention being given to the academic, public and private sector challenges, and opportunities for progress, efficiency, effectiveness, and sustainability. Presented in parts to highlight key aspects of the subject area, the book explores production practices including increasingly important programs in integrated farming systems, vertical agriculture and urban farming, processes, value adding for commodities, agricultural technology, supply chain innovations and consumer considerations. The book provides foundational insights into the underpinnings of today’s food systems, its challenges and its opportunities for the future.
This book provides a practical guide to habitats law in relation to planning and permitting in England. It contains a long-overdue introduction to, and overview of, the complicated and rapidly evolving system of wildlife and habitat protection both on land and in the marine environment. As well as providing an introduction to key legal principles, it explains the processes followed and factors taken into account in reaching decisions involving our natural world. The impact of habitat and wildlife laws is increasingly affecting all aspects of life. From a planning perspective, whether to do with house building or the construction of road and rail projects, to the day-to-day functioning of permitted activities such as sewage treatment works and dredging activities in ports, habitats laws plays a significant role.ABOUT THE AUTHORBrendon Moorhouse is an environmental and planning barrister practising at Six Pump Court, a Chambers recognised as one of the Countries' leading sets for environmental and planning law. Climate change litigation is a widely researched phenomenon and the number of climate cases, on a global scale, is continuously increasing. This book examines in detail climate change litigation taking place at the EU Courts, i.e. the General Court and Court of Justice of the European Union – a jurisdiction that has received relatively little research attention so far. The focus of the book is the standing requirements that private parties must satisfy in order to bring direct actions for annulment before the EU Courts pursuant to Article 263 TFEU, fourth paragraph (the EU standing test). The book contains a thorough examination of how the standing test has been applied and understood in EU climate change litigation, and what the foundational considerations of the test are. Moreover, it is considered whether climate change, and the private rights and interests affected by it, is recognised as a legitimate basis for standing under the test or whether a mismatch is at play. On this basis, the book engages in discussions of the potential implications for the role of the EU Courts and for EU climate law, as well as discussions of how climate change litigation affects the legal development of the EU standing test. The book is of particular relevance to academics and legal practitioners with an interest in understanding how and why the EU standing test is highly challenging for climate change litigants. The author, Sine Rosvig Sørensen, holds a masters degree and a PhD in law from Aarhus University. This book is a lightly revised version of her PhD thesis with the same title.
A sea-change is coming for commercial leasing. As the climate emergency gathers pace, the pressure is on for the property sector to get its house(s) in order. And for all the column inches on potential regulation or absent top-down policy, it is fast understanding that its contractual relationships, particularly its green leases, will be key to concreting environmental ambitions and ESG expectations into its real estate. To be properly impactful, the green lease must do many things. It must cater for existing legislation in many areas, while anticipating change. It must rethink bricks and mortar as a complex body, living its operations and breathing out clean air. In aligning the interests of landlords and tenants it must, arguably for the first time, challenge the fundamental notions of FRI leasing in a way that is both credible and commercially viable. This book explains the why and the how of green leasing in the commercial world. It offers drafting tips to help this nascent tool take root, and it makes a necessarily broad analysis of its legislative context. It considers how the development of solicitor's duties could demand more from the legal profession's understanding and advice. It was written to inspire and empower real estate lawyers and practitioners, as they support the efforts of future-looking commercial clients to rebuild the industry from the ground up.ABOUT THE AUTHORClare Harman Clark is a Senior Counsel - Knowledge in the real estate team at Taylor Wessing LLP. She chairs the Property Section at the Law Society and teaches on the Property Law and Practice and Commercial Property modules of the LPC at the University of Westminster.Back in the mists of time, she trained as a journalist and still writes regularly for national and trade press. She sits on the editorial board of the Landlord and Tenant Review and has contributed chapters to various books on the development of legal practice (including Career Development for Women Lawyers; Tomorrow's KM: innovation, best practice, and the future of knowledge management; and Lawyer's guide to the future of practice management).Since qualifying at Clifford Chance LLP, she has spent the best part of two decades advising on all aspects of commercial real estate, for a vast array of clients. In her current role, Clare focuses on knowledge management and enjoys the professional space to leverage her transactional experience while engaging with the macro trends affecting our sector. She recently completed a Masters in International Planning and Sustainable Development - for all the discussion on pandemics, or Brexit, or technology, by far the biggest issue facing us today is the climate change crisis.CONTENTSChapter One - Introduction - Changing the WorldChapter Two - Background law and regulationChapter Three - The new generation of green leasesChapter Four - Drafting the green leaseChapter Five - Seeking other opportunities to import green lease provisionsChapter Six - The role of the real estate lawyerChapter Seven - Conclusion: The Future is GreenBibliography
"This book considers the similarities and differences between Indigenous knowledge and science and how, when taken together, they enrich one other. Advanced students and researchers in natural resource management, ecology, conservation, and environmental sciences will learn about the practices of Indigenous people in the natural world"--
This book presents the updated results of an investigation carried out in 2019. The National Autonomous University of Mexico's (UNAM) Climate Change Research Program (PINCC), funded the research coordinated by Armelle Gouritin. The research aims to answer the following questions: Does the Mexican legal framework and public policies address forced internal climate mobility? If not, what could be the elements of a legal framework and public policies to address the phenomenon? As the phenomenon was approached it was clear that it was extremely complex and consisted of numerous tensions that would lead to other questions throughout the research process.Climate forced internal displacement is projected as a huge-scale phenomenon in Mexico. Against this background, the book provides the first critical diagnosis of the current politico-legal Mexican framework and finds it to be lagging behind in terms of prevention and attention. The book analyses the three-level Mexican governance (federal, state and local levels), and identifies serious loopholes according to a rights-based approach that particularly focuses on women, indigenous peoples, and persons and communities with scarce economic resources. The results provide information on up-coming legislative and political processes and provide benchmarks that can be applied in other case-studies, including other national frameworks' critical analysis.
This book addresses the Arctic and the northern regions by exploring cold waters and northern seascapes. It focuses on cultural discourses and artistic representations concerning the human experience and imagination of how the Arctic Ocean has been explored and used. It aims to assess what is specific to the northern waters vis-a-vis other sea and water areas in the world. The contextual background is provided by the fundamental shift from terra-based thinking towards aqua-based thinking, including the histories of the northern waters and the innovative ocean studies of the last decades. This book will be of interest to readers in Arctic studies and Sea and Ocean studies (including those with interests in literature, history, cultural and film studies, anthropology and politics), Environmental History and Cultural studies as well as in Russian studies. The book has been assembled with a view towards upper-level undergraduate and post-graduate students and scholars and will also be appropriate for courses in the fields mentioned above. The book will be of interest to specialists working in and with Arctic environmental issues. There is a broad array of international academic networks, environmental, governance and cultural associations outside academia whose members may also find the book of interest.
