Psychology of Gang Involvement expands existing knowledge by applying psychological knowledge to gangs, including how gang members think, their mental and emotional well-being, and their perceptions of gang involvement, as well as issues relating to gang prevention and intervention strategies. This book offers readers a clearer understanding of the important role that social psychological processes play in the formation and maintenance of gangs and gang membership. It will enhance readers' understanding of gang members' social cognition, emotional intelligence, well-being, and mental health, as well as how these factors potentially promote and sustain individual gang involvement. Readers will discover also how these important psychological characteristics vary according to an individual's commitment to a gang. Organized in three sections, the first focuses on issues relevant to theoretical perspectives of gang involvement. Chapters include detailed examinations of a gang member's experiences and the implications of these for theoretical development, and considerations of the importance of social and psychological issues such as group processes and levels of commitment to gang membership to, understand and explain involvement in gangs. The second section centers on issues such as adverse childhood experiences and trauma, and examines their links to male and female gang membership as potential risk factors and outcomes of gang involvement. The section concludes by contemplating how the mental health, traumatic experiences, and involvement in violence compares between gang members and other violent men in adulthood. The final section considers current responses to gang membership by evaluating individual and group-based approaches to gang prevention and intervention strategies, and concludes with a theoretical conceptualization of how a strengths-based approach could work to reduce gang involvement. This book will be a useful text for a wide range of readers interested in, or working with gang members, including academics and students, practitioners, youth workers, clinicians, and criminal justice agents.

This book examines the impact of austerity on healthcare delivery in English prisons. It argues that austerity has been a political experiment that has caused debt to balloon, eroded the prison health system and perpetuated a cycle of punishment, resulting in sicker prisoners and violating prisoners' human rights.

This book highlights the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the mental health needs of children and adolescents in order to shed light on future practice and reform needed to better deal with the aftermath of such devastating events. The book identifies the conditions during any public health crisis that heighten the mental health needs of children and adolescents and suggests the reforms of mental health services needed to better meet the needs of children and youths during and following pandemics and other public health crises. Importance is placed not only on addressing the effects of COVID-19 but on anticipating and preparing for other public health disruptions to the lives of those who have not reached adulthood. Although mental health services in all settings are considered, special attention is given to the role of schools in providing for the mental health of children and adolescents and preparing for the mental health implications of future public health disruptions. The book will be of equal use to both students and researchers in the fields of mental health, well-being, and education as well as teachers, educational psychologists, social workers, and practitioners working in schools and communities to address students' mental health needs. It will help readers better understand how and why COVID-19 was a negative influence on students' mental health, and unpack how best to deal with the aftermath of the pandemic.

Applying Person-centred Care in Mental Health focuses on the environment of inpatient mental health units. Here, a patient's actions are often understood through reference to their illness; if they disagree with staff they lack insight or are aggressive, if they seek independence they are uncooperative and non-compliant, if they wish to be alone they are seen as withdrawn. Imagine being this patient, faced with situations where you are told your reality is not right, that you are a different person to who you think you are and that you have a mental disorder and need treatment, even though you do not think so. Imagine the impact this clash of values could have on you, where your values are routinely undermined, ignored, or subsumed within a medical paradigm. This contemporary and unique guide will be valuable for all staff working with people with a mental illness. Its focus is on inpatient units, however it also applies to staff working in the community. The guide provides a broad understanding of values-based practice and how to work with people's values from a person-centred perspective. Developed by K.W.M. Fulford, values-based practice ensures that the person, as a patient, has their perspective acknowledged and considered in any decisions or actions taken. This book utilises a 10 principle decision-making framework to guide and enable clinicians to reflect on their engagement and clinical decisions. Using exercises and practice scenarios, values used in clinical practice, how they present in different situations and how they influence decision making are examined. It will assist you to critique and monitor your practice in order to maintain best care according to the patient's perspective.

Almost everyone with an anxiety disorder or who suffers from panic attacks are told to "just deal with it." They have no idea what they are saying. They haven't experienced it like you and I have. Some people are referred to counselors and psychologists, and that approach doesn't always work. Anxiety and panic attacks require a unique approach. Left untreated, anxiety will grow into a beast that is nearly uncontrollable. Once it has us completely in its grasp, it will seek to destroy us. This book is based on science and fact. A nurse is bound by law, integrity, and an oath to do no harm. Therefore, only the most factual and effective information is included in this book and its companion 30-day workbook.

I første omgang overfor anoreksiens væsen.

"A rigorous, in-depth guide to the history, philosophy, and scientific exploration of this widespread emotional state . . . [LeDoux] offers a magisterial review of the role of mind and brain in the generation of unconscious defense responses and consciously expressed anxiety. . . . [His] charming personal asides give an impression of having a conversation with a world expert." -Nature A comprehensive and accessible exploration of anxiety, from a leading neuroscientist and the author of Synaptic Self Collectively, anxiety disorders are our most prevalent psychiatric problem, affecting about forty million adults in the United States. In Anxious, Joseph LeDoux, whose NYU lab has been at the forefront of research efforts to understand and treat fear and anxiety, explains the range of these disorders, their origins, and discoveries that can restore sufferers to normalcy. LeDoux's groundbreaking premise is that we've been thinking about fear and anxiety in the wrong way. These are not innate states waiting to be unleashed from the brain, but experiences that we assemble cognitively. Treatment of these problems must address both their conscious manifestations and underlying non-conscious processes. While knowledge about how the brain works will help us discover new drugs, LeDoux argues that the greatest breakthroughs may come from using brain research to help reshape psychotherapy. A major work on one of our most pressing mental health issues, Anxious explains the science behind fear and anxiety disorders. Praise for Anxious:"[Anxious] helps to explain and prevent the kinds of debilitating anxieties all of us face in this increasingly stressful world." -Daniel J. Levitin, author of The Organized Mind and This Is Your Brain on Music "A careful tour through the current neuroscience of fear and anxiety . . . [Anxious] will reward the informed reader." -The Wall Street Journal "An extraordinarily ambitious, provocative, challenging, and important book. Drawing on the latest research in neuroscience (including work in his own laboratory), LeDoux provides explanations of the origins, nature, and impact of fear and anxiety disorders." -Psychology Today
