Trotz der Beweise und Empfehlungen verschiedener Organisationen gibt es keine einheitlichen Anforderungen, die die Evakuierung von chirurgischem Rauch vorschreiben. In dieser Abschlussarbeit werden aktuelle Forschungsarbeiten zur Ermittlung potenzieller Gesundheitsgefahren sowie die aktuellen Empfehlungen zur Filtration und Evakuierung von Operationsrauch identifiziert. Chirurgischer Rauch ist ein Toxin, das dem Zigarettenrauch ähnelt. Die Ablation von 1 g Gewebe erzeugt eine Rauchfahne mit einer äquivalenten Mutagenität gegenüber sechs ungefilterten Zigaretten. Es wurde die Anwesenheit von reizenden, karzinogenen und neurotoxischen Verbindungen im elektrochirurgischen Rauch bewiesen. Darüber hinaus bestehen andere Gefahren, unter bestimmten Umständen, wenn Gewebe mit gefährlichen Viren infiziert ist.
