  • - en bog om historiske spørgsmål
    af Erling Sandmo
    269,95 kr.

    297,95 kr.

In 1644 the University of Copenhagen established its first anatomical theatre. In addition to the instruction of students, research was also carried out in the Anatomy House. Here Thomas Bartholin, the Professor of Anatomy, demonstrated the thoraic duct and later the lymphatic vessels in a human being, an achievement that has brought him fame. In 1662 Thomas Bartholin published A Short Description of the Anatomy House in Copenhagen, which meticulously describes the layout of the Anatomy House alongside the first eighteen years of its history. This volume presents Bartholin's book for the first time in English, as well as the original Latin text, enabling a broader audience to draw on its various and detailed accounts. A commentary and an introduction as well as rich body of illustrations make this edition a valuable resource for historians of medicine.Niels W. Bruun is a Senior Research Fellow at the Royal Library Copenhagen.

  • - En historiografisk-kritisk undersøgelse
    af Sebastian Olden-Jørgensen
    122,95 kr.

I WILL that if I say a heavy thingYour tongues forgive me; seeing ye know that springHas flecks and fits of pain to keep her sweet,And walks somewhile with winter-bitten feet. Moreover it sounds often well to letOne string, when ye play music, keep at fretThe whole song through; one petal that is deadConfirms the roses, be they white or red;Dead sorrow is not sorrowful to hearAs the thick noise that breaks mid weeping were; The sick sound aching in a lifted throatTurns to sharp silver of a perfect note; And though the rain falls often, and with rainLate autumn falls on the old red leaves like pain,I deem that God is not disquieted. Also while men are fed with wine and bread,They shall be fed with sorrow at his hand. There grew a rose-garden in Florence landMore fair than many; all red summers throughThe leaves smelt sweet and sharp of rain, and blewSideways with tender wind; and therein fellSweet sound wherewith the green waxed audible,As a bird¿s will to sing disturbed his throatAnd set the sharp wings forward like a boatPushed through soft water, moving his brown sideSmooth-shapen as a maid¿s, and shook with prideHis deep warm bosom, till the heavy sun¿sSet face of heat stopped all the songs at once. The ways were clean to walk and delicate; And when the windy white of March grew late,Before the trees took heart to face the sunWith ravelled raiment of lean winter on,The roots were thick and hot with hollow grass.

In the spring of 1853, my uncle, Joshua Bailey, came from California to Ohio to see his mother and his brothers, uncle John Bailey, and my father, Eben Bailey. But my father had moved to Fountain County, Indiana, so uncle Joshua came through Indiana to see us. Joshua Bailey had gone to California in 1849, across the plains and had made over one hundred thousand dollars in gold. He hired my brother-in law, William Reighley, to come out with him from Adams County, Ohio, to Indiana, to buy stock to take across the plains to California. My uncle had bought a span of mules in Ohio. Three of my cousins, William McNeal, Joel Bailey, George Bailey, and a man by the name of Bart Robins, brought the mules and some harness through to Indiana, so William Reighley, uncle Joshua and my cousins, were all together at my father's. My brother, Crawford Bailey, and my self, concluded to go along with them.

  • - Three More Argumentative Essays
    af Ib Gram-Jensen
    124,95 kr.

The three essays in this volume can be read individually, but all turn on the case for a revision of Marx' and Engels' historical materialism and for a less arbitrary way of reading their texts. The first one deals with the major weaknesses of Marx' and Engels' historical materialism and how to develop a better alternative without losing the critical and revolutionary edge of the original version. The second one demonstrates how Hal Draper misread some crucial passages in The Communist Manifesto, and offers a more cogent representation. The third one is a mere sketch, but suggests how the revised historical materialism outlined in the first essay makes it possible to understand the phenomenon of war.

THE regard which every one has for the old French provinces is by no means inexplicable. Out of them grew the present solidarity of republican France, but in spite of it the old limits of demarcation are not yet expunged. One and all retain to-day their individual characteristics, manners, and customs, and also a certain subconscious atmosphere. Many are the casual travellers who know Normandy and Brittany, at least know them by name and perhaps something more, but how many of those who annually skim across France, in summer to Switzerland and in winter to the Riviera or to Italy, there to live in seven-franca-day pensions, and drink a particularly vile brand of tea, know where Brittany leaves off and Normandy begins, or have more than the vaguest of vague notions as to whether the charming little provincial capital of Nantes, on the Loire, is in Brittany or in Poitou. A recollection of their school-day knowledge of history will help them on the latter point, but geography will come in and puzzle them still more. There are many French writers, and painters for that matter, who have made these provinces famous. Napoleon, perhaps, set the fashion, when he wrote, in 1786, that eulogy beginning: ¿It is now six or seven years since I left my native country.¿ More familiar is the ¿Native Land¿ of Lamartine. Camille Flammarion wrote ¿My Cradle,¿ meaning Champagne; Dumas wrote of Villers-Cotterets, and Chateaubriand and Renan of Brittany; but head and shoulders above them all stand out Frederic Mistral and his fellows of the Félibres at Avignon and Arles.

Truly, Yellowstone National Park is a wonderland of nature. Poets have written about it, and artists have painted it, but to believe that such a scenic region is possible, you must see with your own eyes the spouting geysers, bubbling cauldrons, giant canyons and other spectacular phenomena, all of which present a flashing brilliance of motion and color which you will never forget. Yellowstone is the largest, the oldest and, perhaps, the best known of Americäs many national parks. It is at once weird, incredible and magnificent in its rugged, wild beauty. It is one of the greatest wild-life sanctuaries in the world. Frontiersman John Colter discovered the fabulous area by chance in the winter of 1807-08. Colter had been sent by the celebrated trader, Manuel Lisa, to Pierre¿s Hole in eastern Idaho to make friends with the Crow Indians. Coming home Colter sought a short cut and stumbled upon the mystery of Yellowstone. When he told his friends of the fantastic land he had seen, they refused to believe him.

The last few decades have seen the emergence of theoretical history as an academic discipline characterised by conferences, journals, and an international community of researchers. It is about a scientific search for patterns in history, using quantitative data and formal, often mathematical models to understand the past, interpret the present and shape the future. This book is a comprehensive survey of the new discipline's themes and participants, including its early roots. The first two chapters define the scope of theoretical history and present some background knowledge and assumptions. This is followed by a review of mathematical methods, covering topics like calculus, network theory, statistics, and time-series analysis. Three chapters cover respectively socio-cultural, economic-technological, and military-political processes in history. Cities and urbanism, historical cycles such as in war and the economy, and the impact of the environment on social change also each have their own chapter. The final chapter provides a guide to data sources. There is an index and bibliography.
