In this bravely honest book, doctor, psychologist and veteran fell running champion Julie Carter reveals how to master the art of approaching life's Red Lines. Extending the edges of our capabilities in the quest to live a fulfilling life.
"After flipping her raft days away from help on a trip down the remote Salmon River, Katie Arnold's shattered leg tests both her spirit and her marriage for years to come. It also reignites her meditation practice and motivates her to dive into Zen in search of healing. Before the accident, Katie was an elite ultrarunner with a simmering but adequate marriage who avoided being indoors whenever possible. But who is she afterwards? In the midst of hardship, Katie turns for support to the Zen practice she had long dabbled in. This is a Zen study wrapped in a memoir that tells the story of a search for stillness by a woman born for wildness. Spanning roughly two years, from shortly before the accident through the long, uncertain healing of both leg and marriage, it is a personal narrative of that tumultuous time nested inside meditations on Zen."--
What do you desperately want to achieve in running, in sport, in life? How do you identify the summit that your passion is driving you towards? How do you harness that passion's remarkable power? How do you plan your path towards that towering achievement? Why should motivation not be a problem? How do you overcome setbacks? How can YOU reach your mountaintop?International ultrarunner and coach Steve Till analyses his own experiences, inspirations and beliefs - as well as those of sportspeople of all standards - to trace how they have shaped and empowered his remarkably long and wide-ranging career, in an exploration of goal-setting, motivation, resilience and achievement, to create a book that is a must-read for runners at any level, and indeed all of us who try and make the best of our abilities in any walk - or run - of life.Steve has competed in 100km and 24-hour events for his country, won medals in national championships, run more than 100 marathons, over 500 parkruns, and is a Centurion, having race walked 100 miles in less than 24 hours. His hard-won insights and moving examples can help you to harness your passion, identify your mountaintop, plan your ascent, overcome any setbacks and finally reach your personal summit.Primarily about running but directly applicable to any challenge, The Run of Life explores what it takes to identify the right goal - the one that excites your passion - to plan for its achievement, to overcome any setbacks and to prepare yourself for the ultimate test. It does this by examining Steve's own journey from coming last in university cross country races to running for Great Britain and Northern Ireland in ultrarunning events, and the experiences of dozens of other runners, sportspeople and those who strive in any arena. There are lessons here, but it's not preaching. It is more about ideas, interest and inspiration.
Whether you're an experienced runner or a complete beginner, this inspiring book will motivate you to train your body and mind to complete one of the hardest physical feats of all—an ultramarathonUltra-races—distances longer than 26.2 miles—aren’t for “normal people.” Normal people have jobs, families, or a million other obligations that do not exist in the world of ultrarunning. Or that’s what Sid Garza-Hillman thought as he faced the starting line of his first 50K.But the more he learned about the sport, the more he realized that ultrarunning is for more than elite athletes: moms, dads, grandparents, young people, old people, people with full-time jobs, and others successfully cross the finish lines of ultra-races around the world every year.In this book, Sid distills the life lessons he's learned from the trails—as a ten-time ultramarathoner and Race Director of the Mendocino Coast 50K—to teach you how to:Move through the fear and mental blocks that prevent you from reaching your goals—on and off the trailSlow down and be present in a world full of endless distractionsTest your mettle and prove you’re stronger than you ever knewCommit to a well-rounded—but realistic and adaptable—training planNot your typical ultramarathon training guide with rigid schedules and prescribed workouts, this book powerfully outlines the invaluable struggles, benefits, and life lessons that await anyone who dares to dive into the world of ultrarunning.
It was about five years ago, walking around my local park on a beautiful Saturday morning when I suddenly realized something was dreadfully wrong. On the soccer fields, kids from a local club were waiting in lines to dribble a ball around a set of cones. On another field, players from a nearby high school football team were waiting in line to run through a set of tires. On the baseball diamond, batters were hitting balls off tees. On the tennis court, the instructor was tossing the ball underhand to a player attempting to repeat the same forehand stroke over and over into an empty court.Soccer, football, baseball, and tennis are incredibly exciting, dynamic activities defined by their interpersonal actions: attacker vs defender, pitcher vs hitter, server vs receiver. It seems like almost every week we see a highlight of an athlete from one of these sports doing something new and unexpected. So, why then do we practice them in such a static, isolated, and choreographed manner? If an alien from another planet came and watched, would they think the goal of sports here on earth was to defeat inanimate pieces of rubber? Why do we insist on teaching movement skills this way? From golf lessons to soccer practice to learning to do pottery, the dominant view has been that we become skillful by trying to repeat the one, "correct" technique given to us by a coach or an instructor, over and over until we get it right. In baseball, tennis, and golf we learn THE way to swing. In soccer and basketball, we learn THE correct way to dribble a ball. In pottery, we learn THE way to position our hands. We reduce these creative, interactive, dynamic activities down to dull, isolated fundamentals so that they can be drilled and mastered. For a long time, we have assumed that decomposition and repetition rule the day if you want to be an elite performer. In this book, I want to introduce you to a revolution in the way we think about learning to move and act in the world. A radical change in sports skills training that has inspired Chelsea coach Thomas Tuchel to have his players hold tennis balls in their hands during soccer practice, has led Philadelphia Phillies' instructor Jason Ochart to conduct baseball practice using hula hoops where batters try to swing like Happy Gilmore, and has introduced a new practice activity to tennis great Novak Djokovic's repertoire that involves trying to deliberately pound the ball into the court.

"Ten years ago, Martinus Evans got some stern advice from his doctor: "Lose weight or die." First defensive, but then defiant, Evans vowed that day to run a marathon, though his doctor thought he was crazy. Since then, Evans has run eight marathons and hundreds of other distances in his 300-something body, created his own devoted running community, and has been featured on the cover of Runner's World. This book is a blueprint for those who may not fit the image of a "traditional" runner-that is, someone who is larger in size, less athletic, out of shape, or dealing with any kind of health issue that slows them down-to feel empowered to lace up their shoes and embrace the body they have right now. As Evans says, the incredible benefits of running-better sleep, strong muscles and bones, better cardiovascular and mental health, and a sense of community-can and should be available to all of us. This practical handbook contains specialized advice to make getting started less intimidating, covering everything from gear and nutrition to training schedules, recovery tips, races (it's okay to come in DFL! [i.e., dead f*cking last]), and finding a running group. Full of essential advice and humor from a former newbie who fell off a treadmill on his first run (literally), The Slow AF Run Club is for anyone who wants to pick up running for the sheer joy of it"--

The Story of The North Central College Cross Country and Track & Field TeamsRun for Fun and Personal Bests is not about trophies and championships. It's ultimately about much more important goals and lasting rewards for the student athletes who built and benefit from our North Central program. The basic responsibility of a coach should never veer from the goal of stressing core internal values that guide athletes to personal growth.I train cross country and track athletes, but this recipe, this process, should work for any athlete in any sport. I also believe it can guide other young people pursuing a personal goal in school, at work, or in their personal lives, who are asking themselves, "I know where I want to go, but how do I get there?"At times, we are all so busy working toward material outcomes for our youths that we don't have time for the most important needs they require to succeed. In a world that's becoming more materialistic, more professional, more outcome-oriented, we believe, to the contrary, that the ultimate competition is you against you.
