In most modern metal shops, you’ll find both a lathe and a vertical mill. Both machines function by removing material from a block of metal—the "workpiece." The key difference between the two is how the workpiece is handled. On a lathe, the workpiece rotates, and is cut away by a knife tool. (Typical products of lathe work are "turned parts" such as spindles, bearings, screws, washers, and circular blanks for gears.)          On a milling machine, it’s the cutter that rotates. The workpiece is clamped to a table that is moved by precise amounts in two axes at right angles. (Typical mill products are flat-surfaced blocks of metal, like a cube, sometimes drilled for spindles or dowel pins, often tapped for screws.)           Both the lathe and mill are incredibly flexible machines, but neither is capable of doing useful work right "out of the box." Both call for a number of accessories for holding the workpiece, as well as a selection of different cutting tools, drills, reamers, etc. Unlike lathe turning, which has not changed fundamentally in the past 100 years, milling in the small shop has been changed radically by the recent introduction of bench-top machines.          There are now so many different milling machines that insider information has become even more important. In this work, Choosing & Using the Right Milling Machine, Richard Rex provides everything needed to choose the right type of mill—knee-type (Bridgeport) or bench-top—and properly install it depending on the type of work you’re doing. With suggestions for finding, installing, and using the essential accessories, including digital readouts, this work is a must-have for model shops around the globe. And it’s the perfect companion work to Choosing & Using the Right Metal Shop Lathe.             Features Covers different types of milling cutters, including end mills, drill bits, reamers, and slitting saws.Introduces information on the add-ons that get a shop operational with the least delay and expense.Instructs on the installation and use of three popular accessories—table power-feed, digital readout (DRO), and rotary table.Provides a workpiece tutorial that demonstrates many of the commonplace milling routines—ideal for first-time users.

The book illustrates the use of simple mathematical analysis techniques within the area of basic structural mechanics, in particular the elementary theories of beams, columns and cables. The focus is on: i) Identification of the physical background of the theories and their particular mathematical properties. ii) Demonstration of mathematical techniques for analysis of simple problems in structural mechanics, and identification of the relevant parameters and properties of the solution. iii) Derivation of the solutions to a number of basic problems of structural mechanics in a form suitable for later reference. The presentation concentrates on the main principles and the characteristics of the solutions. The theory also serves as a basis for the formulation of numerical models and for intelligent interpretation of their results.

Symmetries and Semi-invariants in the Analysis of Nonlinear Systems details the analysis of continuous- and discrete-time dynamical systems described by differential and difference equations respectively. Differential geometry provides the essential tools for the analysis, tools such as first-integrals or orbital symmetries, together with normal forms of vector fields and of maps. The use of such tools allows the solution of some important problems, studied in detail in the text, which include linearization by state immersion and the computation of nonlinear superposition formulae for nonlinear systems described by solvable Lie algebras. The theory is developed for general nonlinear systems and, in view of their importance for modeling physical systems, specialized for the class of Hamiltonian systems. By using the strong geometric structure of Hamiltonian systems, the results proposed are stated in a quite different, less complex and more easily comprehensible manner. Throughout the text the results are illustrated by many examples, some of them being physically motivated systems, so that the reader can appreciate how much insight is gained by means of these techniques. Various control systems applications of the techniques are characterized including:* computation of the flow of nonlinear systems;* computation of semi-invariants;* computation of Lyapunov functions for stability analysis.Symmetries and Semi-invariants in the Analysis of Nonlinear Systems will be of interest to researchers and graduate students studying control theory, particularly with respect to nonlinear systems. All the necessary background and mathematical derivations are related in detail but in a simple writing style that makes the book accessible in depth to readers having a standard knowledge of real analysis, linear algebra and systems theory.

Granular or particulate materials arise in almost every aspect of our lives, including many familiar materials such as tea, coffee, sugar, sand, cement and powders. At some stage almost every industrial process involves a particulate material, and it is usually the cause of the disruption to the smooth running of the process. In the natural environment, understanding the behaviour of particulate materials is vital in many geophysical processes such as earthquakes, landslides and avalanches. This book is a collection of current research from some of the major contributors in the topic of modelling the behaviour of granular materials. Papers from every area of current activity are included, such as theoretical, numerical, engineering and computational approaches. This book illustrates the numerous diverse approaches to one of the outstanding problems of modern continuum mechanics. Reprinted from Journal of Engineering Mathematics, Vol. 52, Nos. 1-3, 2005
