Jens Kusk Jensen (1866-1936) stod til søs som 17-årig og læste siden til styrmand. Elleve år tog det ham at skrive førsteudgaven af Haandbog i Praktisk Sømandsskab, fire gange led skibe, Kusk Jensen var med på, skibbrud, og manuskripterne gik tabt. Førsteudgaven udkom i 1901, men stadig blev der skrevet og ikke mindst tegnet videre på værket, og udgaven fra 1924 blev den endelige med dens mange detail-illustrationer . En kæmpe bedrift og et hovedværk i maritim dansk litteratur. En guldgrube for alle der interesserer sig for de gamle skibe – eller selv sejler med sejl.
