"Talking on an aviation radio and understanding air traffic control (ATC) instructions can be one of the most intimidating aspects of flight training. In "Say Again, Please" Bob Gardner explains how the ATC system works and teaches pilots what to say, what to expect to hear, how to interpret and react to clearances and instructions, and understand the chatter of the other aircraft sharing your airspace. His conversational-yet-concise writing style will help increase your comfort level when using an aircraft radio. Inside are talk examples of typical radio transmissions explaining how ATC works, as well as simulated flights that clearly demonstrate correct communication procedures in each class of airspace. This hands-on book covers the following: - The ABCs of communicating - Understanding radio equipment - Communication etiquette and rules - VFR, IFR, and emergency communication procedures - Air traffic control facilities and their functions - Review of airspace definitions - Glossary of pilot/controller communication terms and phrases. Let "Say Again, Please" help you learn how to communicate in the air"--
An illustrated account of the dramatic engagement between the Luftwaffe's Me 163 units and Allied bombers during the closing years of World War II.In the summer of 1944, US Army Air Force (USAAF) aircrews flying over the Third Reich reported observing small, high-speed 'batlike' aircraft flying close to their formations. The Luftwaffe's extraordinary Messerschmitt Me 163 rocket-powered interceptor was making its devastating debut with Jagdgeschwader (JG) 400. Capable of reaching high altitudes in the shortest possible time by using a volatile rocket fuel, the Me 163 was the Luftwaffe's most impressive yet dangerous aircraft, and the fastest in the world. Luftwaffe expert Robert Forsyth details the testing of the aircraft and its lethal SG 500 'Fighter Fist' weapons system, as well as its deployment against the B17s and B24s of the USAAF's Eighth Air Force and, from late 1944, the Lancasters and Halifaxes of RAF Bomber Command. These duels started a deadly form of warfare, with the bomber squadrons striking at Germany's synthetic oil refineries and jet airfields, and the Me 163s of JG 400 trying to stop them using cutting-edge aeronautical technology.Using specially commissioned artwork, original photographs and rare first-hand interviews with the pilots that fought the decisive dogfights, this exciting book describes the pivotal encounters over Northern Europe.
Aviation Supplies & Academics, Inc. has been the industry's trusted source for official FAA publications for over 80 years. Illustrated throughout with detailed, full-color drawings and photographs.
This book details the exploits of the highly skilled Naval Aviators charged with achieving air supremacy over New Guinea in their A6M2/3 Zero-sens. The combat record of the Zero-sen in New Guinea has mostly been overstated, with little due being given to the constraining conditions under which the fighter operated. The air combats fought over New Guinea in 1942 between Imperial Japanese Naval Air Force (IJNAF) pilots and their Allied counterparts in P-39 Airacobras and P-40 Warhawks were often 'trial and error' affairs, with both belligerents being caught out by weather. This study covers the key role played by governing factors including geography and climatic conditions, and examines the modified tactics employed by IJNAF Zero-sen pilots to help them cope in-theatre through the comprehensive analysis of RAAF, USAAF and Japanese operational after action reports. Using first-hand accounts from both famous aviators and previously unknown RAAF and Japanese pilots, and specially commissioned artwork, leading South Pacific historian and author Michael John Claringbould sheds new light on the air war fought over the wilds of New Guinea during the course of 1942.

"The incredible advancements in the field of unmanned aircraft within the last decade have made it possible for almost anyone to build their own UAV, opening up exciting business opportunities in numerous fields ranging from video production to agriculture. However, many beginners and even more experienced hobbyists find this daunting, as reliable information for construction and programming of unmanned aircraft is often scattered across various sources, and the industry lacks established standards for the safe and efficient operation of small uncrewed aircraft. The Droner's Manual compiles the most important and relevant knowledge into a guide for both beginner and experienced operators. With his expertise as a UAV operator for government, industry, and hobby uses, author Kevin Jenkins offers step-by-step guidance to build, program, test, and fly both multicopters and fixed-wing aircraft for a variety of purposes. This comprehensive manual covers uncrewed system components, aircraft set up, flight controller fundamentals and failsafe features, regulations for recreational and commercial use, the flight testing process, and flight operations. The more than 70 illustrations include detailed schematics and diagrams for the construction of complex systems such as first-person view (FPV) and imaging payloads. You will fly with confidence by following this book's direction on mission planning, checklists, and safe flight operations. Whether you use it to build your first uncrewed aircraft or as a handy reference in the field, The Droner's Manual is an essential for drone builders, pilots, and operators"--

Braving the Elements was written by a United Airlines pilot who's been flying commercial planes for forty years. But this is no ordinary pilot. Scott Kaye is not only one of the fewer than three hundred Boeing 747 captains in the United States, but he's also among a handful of pilots throughout the world who are licensed to fly the biggest planes into the most difficult airports and terrain.Braving the Elements has as many layers as the earth's atmosphere itself. There is no other book quite like it, for within its many anecdotes are not just one book but several books, all with special appeal. It is: An adventurous memoir of a veteran pilot who's seen it all. An engine fire? He's been there. A near collision with a mountain? Done that. Handcuffing a belligerent passenger? Yep. The loss of a good friend on 9/11? That too.An inspiring "self-help" book that's a metaphor for life and how to live it. Throughout the book Kaye draws meaningful lessons from flying that can be applied to our own personal journeys, such as "Follow your autopilot," "Know when to abort your takeoff" "Cobb your power," and other insights that deepen and transcend the narrative itself.A metaphysical "meditation" on the higher realms of life, as they reveal themselves through aviation experiences, including the Law of Attraction, the Law of Reciprocity, and human connectivity. It's a lofty view from 30,000 feet in the air, and Kaye translates it into every aspect of human experience.A close-up look at the pilot "personality" and the various characters to whom passengers entrust their lives, including the "Hat Nazi" and "The Mummy," and a colorful portrait of the pilot's lifestyle, including jet lag, layovers, pranks in the cockpit and the vagaries of "life in the aluminum tube" (who ever thought that "pee control" would be one of a pilot's most valued skills?). And a glimpse into what pilots love (kids visiting the cockpit), what they hate (delays - just like the rest of us), and what they talk about (UFOs, for one).A behind-the scenes look at commercial aviation including company politics, close calls you never knew you had, the most dangerous airports, weather that threatens your flight, plus the author's perspective on several major airline disasters, including a new take on the mysterious disappearance of Malaysia Flight 370.1) A practical and informative "technical" guide for the curious that explains deicing, landings, those waving flaps on the wings, and much more, but all in a user-friendly style integrated with the stories.2) And finally and incidentally, a guide for those interested in pursuing a career in aviation, including challenges and hurdles and how to overcome them, training, and the critical role of seniority. All of this - the stories, secrets, and insights are blended together in a book that will appeal to everyone who has ever flown on an airplane. In the United States, that's 80 percent of the population, or 250,000,000 people - and every one of them has asked themselves questions about flying, planes, and pilots, that have never been answered. Kaye answers those questions along with questions they never even thought to ask, but the answers to which will intrigue, inform, amuse, and even inspire them.[Braving the Elements is the third in a planned series of three books. It includes numerous photographs on a wide range of subjects, including planes, weather phenomenon, airports, heroes and even an occasional villain]This book is one of three written by Scott Kaye.
