This book, the first dedicated to the topic, provides a comprehensive treatment of forward stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in standard optical fibers. SBS interactions between guided light and sound waves have drawn much attention for over fifty years, and optical fibers provide an excellent playground for the study of Brillouin scattering as they support guided modes of both wave types and provide long interaction lengths. This book is dedicated to forward SBS processes that are driven by co-propagating optical fields. The physics of forward SBS is explained in detail, starting from the fundamentals of interactions between guided optical and acoustic waves, with emphasis given to the acoustic modes that are stimulated in the processes. The realization of forward SBS in standard single-mode, polarization-maintaining and multi-core fibers is then discussed in depth. Innovative potential applications in sensors, monitoring of coating layers, lasers, and radio-frequency oscillators are presented. This book introduces the subject to graduate students in optics and applied physics, and it will be of interest to scientists working in fiber-optics, nonlinear optics and opto-mechanics.Provides the first treatment of forward stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in book form;Reflects the dramatic recent increase in interest in forward SBS processes , driven in part by the promise of new fiber sensing concepts;Delivers a solid and comprehensive grounding in the physics of forward SBS along with detailed experimental set-ups, measurement protocols, and applications.

Optical communication refers to any type of communication that uses light to carry information. An optical communication system is composed of three major components, which include a transmitter, channel and receiver. Transmitter is used to encode a message into an optical signal. Semiconductor devices such as light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and laser diodes are the most commonly used transmitters. The function of a channel is to carry the signal to its destination. Receiver is a component that reproduces the message from the received optical signal. Modern communication relies on optical networking systems which use optical fiber, optical amplifiers, lasers, switches, and routers. The most common type of channel used for optical communications is the optical fiber. The light in an optical fiber is guided by the principle of total internal reflection. The main advantages of optical communication include high bandwidth, exceptionally low loss, large transmission range, and no electromagnetic interference. This book includes some of the vital pieces of work being conducted across the world on various topics related to optical communications. It will serve as a valuable source of reference for graduate and postgraduate students.

Optical fibre is used as a medium to transmit the light signals from one place to another. Optical fibre communication is a communication method wherein the signal is transmitted in the form of light. The fibre wires are preferred over the copper wires for transmitting signals because they offer numerous advantages over electrical cables. Fibre wires have a large transmission capacity and incur only small losses. Additionally, they are also low cost, lightweight, and free from interference. Some major components of optical fibre communications are photo detecting receivers, light signal transmitters, regenerators, optical amplifiers, and beam splitters. Optical fibres have several applications in different fields. However, they are specifically used in the telecommunications industry for internet communication, television signal transmission, and cable television signal transmission. Optical fibres are also used in CCTV surveillance cameras, hospitals, and traffic management systems. This book includes some of the vital pieces of works being conducted across the world, on various topics related to optical fibre communications. It will provide comprehensive knowledge to the readers.

This instructor's guide is written to accompany to the fifth edition of Understanding Fiber Optics by Jeff Hecht, originally published by Pearson/Prentice-Hall in 2006 and later republished by Laser Light Press. It is being published now to help readers using the book in self-study of fiber optics, because nothing like it has been published since then. It includes answers to quiz questions and "questions to think about" in the book, and worked-out calculations for many of the problems in the book. It also include suggestions for teachers on how to present material in the book, an explanation of the structure of the book, and supplementary material including references and links available when the fifth edition of the book was published in 2006. The author has not tried to update links other than his own.

Plasmonic optical biosensors allow label-free and highly sensitive detection of analytes, usually within a dedicated microfluidic system that brings the sample to the biosensor surface. Since the nineties, an optical fiber counterpart to the bulky Kretschmann prism configuration implemented in most commercial systems is investigated and developed to allow in situ measurements with a miniaturized system. Thanks to straightforward light injection and considering the optical fiber geometry, such developments indeed allow remote operation in very small volumes of analytes of the order of 10 µL or even less. The plasmonic optical fiber technology is now mature to such a degree that it becomes to be industrialized. Various configurations comprising unclad/etched multimode optical fibers, D-shaped fibers, U-bent fibers, interferometers, and optical fiber gratings (tilted and long period fiber gratings) were reported. When combined with thin metal films or nanoparticles and functionalized with antibodies, aptamers or other relevant bioreceptors, they show unprecedented performance in terms of sensitivity and limit of detection. Also, the target applications are ever growing, covering biomedical sensing, environmental sensing, and food quality monitoring, among others. This will be a great resource for photonics Engineers and Bioengineers (Industrial engineers and researchers.
