Are we now living on a dying planet.. shall we drown in our own excrement? Carbon is the source of all living things but at the same time, in our atmosphere.. the air we breath, it can be our final demise! Elementum Carbone explores the evolution of Earth and the consequences of overpopulation and the continuation of the burning of fossil fuels. Experts are fearful of a mean temperature rise of just 2 degrees.. what happens if it rises by as much as 7.5 degrees? The book includes some basic chemistry of the industries that produce the most carbon dioxide.

In 2013 the United States reached a new milestone in radar meteorology, one unsurpassed by any other country in the world due to the American government's transparency policies regarding weather data. All of the Doppler radars were upgraded to make polarimetric measurements, yielding quantities like differential reflectivity, correlation coefficient, and specific differential phase. The entire meteorological community from weather hobbyists all the way to research directors are finding themselves immersed in a deep ocean of new radar data and trying to keep up with the latest improvements. All of these quantities come with a learning curve. For those who don't have the skills to make sense of the journals and technical papers or who just want a reference for the forecast desk, Weather Radar Handbook is designed to provide an excellent summary of the current state of radar meteorology from an operational forecasting perspective.

This is the ultimate guidebook for anyone who needs to know the details of operational weather analysis and forecasting, not just theoretical aspects and basic concepts. It is geared toward meteorology professionals, students, pilots, flight dispatchers, amateurs, storm chasers, and spotters. Basic physical concepts are reviewed, and then the book covers thermodynamics, surface analysis, and upper analysis. There is a thorough overview of weather systems, including their thermal structure, dynamics, and effects. Special problems such as thunderstorms, winter weather, and tropical weather are treated in detail. The margins are filled with forecasting facts, hard-hitting quotes, educational stories, and even a few fun weather jokes. With added emphasis on analysis, visualization, and awareness of model limitations, readers learn to use tools properly and are always a step ahead.

The science of forecasting has not changed, but the Internet and new marvels of technology have completely redefined the process. It's not a rare thing for weather hobbyists and National Weather Service forecasters to get a product from the very same site. With more and more charts and tools appearing on the Internet by the week, how do you make sense of the avalanche of weather imagery and data? Using a double-page format, the Weather Map Handbook demonstrates nearly every type of weather map, image, and product in common use. An overview of each item's origin, purpose, shortfalls, and tips are outlined. Standards for analysis symbology and chart markings are summarized. The surface, 850 mb, 700 mb, 500 mb, and 300-200 mb charts get two pages each, complete with philosophy, objectives, and techniques for each chart. Thickness, isentropic, and Q vector products get their own sections. The WSR-88D doppler radar, in use by the United States weather services, has played a vast part in the weather information revolution. In the Weather Map Handbook, it gets thirty pages packed with the fundamentals and algorithms of the WSR-88D. Much of this information is obscure and nearly impossible to find. From the workings of the Composite Reflectivity product to the exact process used by the Mesocyclone Detection Algorithm to deconstruct a radar scan, any NEXRAD radar product on the Internet can be understood. From the WRF to the NGM, from the GFS to the GEM, each numerical forecast model is revealed in incredible detail. Ensemble forecasts are highlighted. The satellite chapter explains visible, infrared, and water vapor imagery, how it is created, and how to interpret it. Even the METAR, TAF, SYNOP, and radiosonde formats get their own sections, complete with decoding instructions. Topping off the book is an appendix with surface and upper-level station plot models, a vast technical glossary compiled from the depths of the NWS, SPC, and NCEP, and much more! Whether you're a hobbyist, private forecaster, a professional, or a student, the Weather Map Handbook is the book you can't be without.

An oral history of the Hurricane of 1938 in southeastern Connecticut. Read memories from over 65 people who lived through the storm. Illustrated with more than 60 photographs, many never published before. The hurricane hit on September 21, 1938 with no warning. Wind speeds of 120 miles per hour tore roofs off of houses and schools, uprooted huge trees, and collapsed barns. In New London, a large part of the city burned. After the storm subsided, a tidal surge raced up the Thames River flooding the city of Norwich in places to a depth of eleven feet. Bridges were washed away, dams were washed out and the city was left cut off from all outside communication. Along the shore in Connecticut and Rhode Island, seaside communities were washed away, never to be rebuilt. Within three hours all of southeastern New England was devastated. This book covers Norwich and its surrounding towns including: Preston, Griswold, Sprague, Canterbury, and Bozrah. Stories are also included from coastal towns such as New London, Lord's Point, and Watch Hill and Misquamicut, Rhode Island. Written in partnership with The Norwich Bulletin.

Wouldn't it be useful to be able to come up with an accurate weather forecast simply by reading the clouds? Well, with this book, you can!TV forecasts, online predictions and smartphone apps are all based on the same data - a number-crunched overview of how air pressure and temperature affects the weather over a large geographical area. But to get an idea of how the weather will develop for the precise spot where you're standing (or walking, sailing, golfing, fishing, etc) you don't need any equipment or a wifi connection - you just need to look up.This book will give you a great understanding of why clouds are symptoms of weather patterns, not causes. Highly practical, it shows you how by reading these signs in the sky and referring to the explanatory colour photos and diagrams, you will be able to tell exactly what those signs mean. After its very well received first edition, this second edition is revised and expanded, including plenty of new photos to cover every possible view of the sky. With this at-a-glance guide to the clouds anywhere in the world, on land or at sea, you will be able to predict the weather by recognising cloud types, shapes, colours and behaviour.Including a Foreword by Tom Cunliffe, writer, TV presenter and yachting instructor, this will be an invaluable companion for everyone who enjoys time spent outdoors.

The Weather Forecasting Red Book is a groundbreaking reference that breaks away from theory and helps forecasters tackle everyday prediction problems. The book contains a wealth of information on real-life techniques, methods, and forecast systems. It draws upon a wealth of experience collected by the weather services of the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada. The first section deals with observational systems, explaining what quantities of wind, temperature, and pressure really mean. The analysis section defines standards and conventions for weather maps. The forecasting section has over a hundred pages of techniques, methods, patterns, and basic ideas and principles. And in the numerical model section, key details of the latest models are explained. It's written by a forecaster for forecasters. If it's needed at the forecast desk, it's in here.

  • af Tim Flannery
    172,95 kr.

Leading scientist and climate writer Tim Flannery's #1 international bestseller, The Weather Makers, was one of the first books to break the topic of climate change out into the general conversation. In the ten years since, the facts of our changing climate have become widely accepted, but political leadership has not kept up. With Earth's climate system fast approaching a crisis, Flannery argues that we need to act now.Atmospheric CO2 levels are increasing faster than at any other time in the entire recorded history of Earth. A glacier the size of Florida is sinking into the waters of Antarctica. And around the world, people are already living with the consequences of an altered climate, from demobilizing winters to deadly heatwaves. The response to the climate crisis has been divided. Technological optimists envision geoengineering our way out of trouble with schemes like injecting light-reflecting sulfur into the stratosphere, while pessimists believe that at this point, nothing can be done—humans will have to adapt. Flannery draws on the latest science to describe a third way forward, using strategies that enhance the Earth's own systems for carbon capture and storage—from large-scale seaweed farming to the production of carbon-negative cement. If we begin investing now, third-way technologies could capture one-quarter of current global emissions by 2050. In the meantime, governments must work together to break the link between prosperity and pollution and to continue to increase the reach of alternative energies. Written with urgency but also optimism, Atmosphere of Hope is a must-read for anyone interested in our global future.

  • - Påvisning af vejrmæssigt kritiske måneder i vækstperioden i årene 1703-1800
    af Jens Ernholtz
    186,95 kr.
