Our free will is a gift of immeasurable grace from the steadfast love of our great God. Outcomes of our free will are who we choose to honor and identify with, who we believe and follow, and who we give our heart to and love above all. God does not force us to choose what He chooses. That is our decision to make. The Lord of Life, Christ Jesus, asked Simon Peter, "Do you love me more than these?" It was time for Peter to choose.
