When the group Rrose Irwin Sélavy was founded in Yugoslavia in 1983, its members DuSan Mandic (1954, Ljubljana), Miran Mohar (1958, Novo Mesto), Andrej Savski (1961, Ljubljana), Roman Uranjek (1961, Trbovlje, +2022, Ljubljana) and Borut Vogelnik (*1959, Kranj) were aged between 22 and 29. They all came from the punk and graffiti scene of Ljubljana. Together with the music group Laibach, the theater of the sisters Scipio Nasicas, and the designers from Neuer Kollektivismus (New Collectivism), IRWIN is still one of the main groups of the artists' collective Neue Slowenische Kunst (New Slovenian Art), founded in 1984.This volume is published to mark the 40th anniversary of the artists' collective and to accompany the exhibition at HMKV Dortmund. Since 1983, IRWIN has been investigating the art history of Eastern Europe, especially the ambivalent legacy of the historical avant-garde and its totalitarian successors, i.e. the dialectic of avant-garde and totalitarianism. Since the 1990s, the focus of the group has been on challenging the art history of "Western Modernism" in a critical and iconoclastic way. The artists playfully and darkly contrast it with the "retro avant-garde" and an "Eastern Modernism".The book, which can be read from both sides, is made up of two parts: the first chapter explores the black humor that is a consistent element in IRWIN's work. The second chapter examines issues relating to the state - and how IRWIN uses them to comment on current topics such as migration.

An unveiling of the presence of captivating figures and creatures throughout history. In this gripping philosophical and cultural exploration, Teresa Präauer sets out to investigate figures of transformation, transmission, and translation-across languages, cultures, genres, media, species, and spaces. Hybrids, chimeras, monsters, and liminal creatures of all sorts inhabit these pages, as indeed they do the pages of the cultural archive from Antiquity and the Middle Ages to the present day: everything from the harpies, ape-men, and cynocephali that inhabit the edges of medieval maps and taxonomies to the Krampuses and Furries that roam through Alpine villages and convention centers today. Yet these chimeras are not aberrations; rather, they reveal an essential truth about culture and artistic expression. What emerges in Becoming Animal is a kaleidoscopic image of culture as the constant probing of the limits of the sayable, as an unending process of attempting to capture in words and symbols that which cannot be pinned down.

The Romanian-German artist Miron Schmückle is a singular position within contemporary art. Growing up in Romania under Nicolae Ceaüescu, he dreamed of other worlds that seemed forever inaccessible due to the Iron Curtain. From the beginning, Schmückle's uniquely coherent pictorial cosmos has been linked to the idea of primeval forests and jungles, oscillating between hyperrealism and undisguised escapism, precise observation of nature and exuberant imagination. His almost scientific approach belies the fact that his complex creations have not sprung from nature but from imagination. Schmückle's fascinating hybrid creatures intertwine notions of scent and poison, beauty and transience, anatomy and sexuality to create an oeuvre between truth and invention that is both timeless and ostensibly fallen out of time. This monograph comprises works from the past 15 years and gives insights into the artist's concepts and technique through an in-depth interview with art scholar and journalist Simon Elson.MIRON SCHMÜCKLE (*1966 Sibiu, Romania) emigrated toGermany in 1988 and studied from 1991-96 at the MuthesiusUniversity of Fine Arts and Design in Kiel in Renate Anger's classfor experimental painting, and at the HFBK Hamburg in the classfor performance with Marina Abramovic in 1994. He moved intohis first studio in Hamburg in 1997. Since 2008, he has lived andworked in Berlin. He received his doctorate in 2016, with a studyon Joris Hoefnagel's 16th century cabinet miniatures..
