    Hack Kampmann var 31 år, da han tegnede sit første hus, men allerede to år efter slog han sit navn fast blandt førende danske arkitekter. Det var med Provinsarkivet i Viborg (1889-1891), som gav ham det kongelige bygningsinspektorat over Nørrejylland. Han blev jydernes arkitekt med bygninger i hele det store distrikt med stribevis af hovedværker som Aarhus Toldbod, Aarhus Teater, Aalborg Posthus, Hornslet Ting- og Arresthus m.v. Ufattelige mængder af projekter, altid i høj kvalitet, udgik fra hans tegnestue. I København blev han husarkitekt for brygger Carl Jacobsen med udvidelsen af Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek som hovedværket. Kampmann var en ener. Hans enestående tegnetalent, de umådelige mængder af opmålinger og den flid, han i studieårene havde udvist betød, at han besad et formrepertoire, som uden videre kunne omsættes til konkret virkelighed. Hans sidste værk, Politigården i København, blev det mest omstridte. Kampmann døde midt i projekteringen i 1920, og en studerende, som undervejs i byggeprojektet fik sin afgang fra Kunstakademiet, Aage Rafn, stillede sig frem og tog æren af projektet. Dette forsøg på at tilrane sig en uretmæssig kunstnerisk ophavsret afvises i bogen.

    Philip de Lange, en ung murermester, indvandrede til København fra Haag i 1729. Som en datidig gæstearbejder kom han for at deltage i genopbygningen af hovedstaden, der var blevet reduceret med en tredjedel efter den voldsomme brand i 1728. Bogen er rigt illustreret med nye fotografiske optagelser af den internationalt anerkendte arkitekt Jens Lindhe.
