En gåtur gennem København kan foregå på mange måder. Man kan ile af sted uden øje for sine omgivelser. Eller man kan slentre gennem gaderne, kigge lidt på vinduer og mennesker, dumpe ned på en café, lade øjnene vandre fra bygninger til folk til optrin. Helt tilfældigt, herligt afslappende. Og endelig kan man gå en tur med Allan Mylius Thomsen. Læser man bare en af de mange artikler, der i flere år har været bragt i lørdagsudgaverne af Jyllands-Posten København, og som nu er samlet i denne bog, bliver næste tur rundt i København en anden og større oplevelse.Allan Mylius Thomsen (f. 1948) er dansk forfatter og byhistoriker og har udgivet en lang række bøger om Københavns historie. Oprindeligt er Allan Mylius Thomsen uddannet manuskriptforfatter fra Filmskolen, og han har siden hen lavet radio- og tv-udsendelser samt været guide på Dyrehavsbakken og på byvandringer i det historiske København.

Bogens tre bind gennemgår omfanget af pompejansk udsmykkede interiører i private boliger og offentlige bygninger i Danmark i perioden fra 1830 til ca. 1890.De tre bind indeholder sammenlagt mere end 900 illustrationer, heraf langt de fleste i farver. Her præsenteres kunstnernes farvelagte dekorationsudkast, fremragende eksempler på periodens billedkunst, ældre fotografier af nu forsvundne ejendomme og dekorationer, samt fotografen Ole Akhøjs mange pragtfulde nyoptagelser af de bevarede udsmykninger fra perioden.Denne dekorationshistoriens storhedstid udfolder sig på baggrund af danske kunstneres og arkitekters studierejser til Italien, hvor de hentede ny inspiration ved udgravningsstederne i Napolibugtens forsvundne antikke byer og det kejserlige paladsbyggeri. Disse to væsentlige hovedstrømninger i perioden – populært kaldet den danske guldalder – forenes i en kunstart, som beriger privatboligen med dekorationer og kunst, og opløfter de offentlige institutioner rundt om i landet med den "antikke" ånd. Det er en egn med lang arkitekturtradition, grundlagt på Vallekilde Højskole i 1880’erne med en ny æstetik, nationalromantikken, der udfordrede bjerget, Kunstakademiet. Ligesom Skagen tiltrak Rørvigs særlige lys kunstnere og efter dem fulgte velbeslåede landliggere, der med gode arkitekter bebyggede de første klitrækker. Det banede på godt og ondt vejen for kystnære bælter af sommerhuse. Næsten alle betydende danske arkitekter har bygget sommerhuse her. r

Hack Kampmann var 31 år, da han tegnede sit første hus, men allerede to år efter slog han sit navn fast blandt førende danske arkitekter. Det var med Provinsarkivet i Viborg (1889-1891), som gav ham det kongelige bygningsinspektorat over Nørrejylland. Han blev jydernes arkitekt med bygninger i hele det store distrikt med stribevis af hovedværker som Aarhus Toldbod, Aarhus Teater, Aalborg Posthus, Hornslet Ting- og Arresthus m.v. Ufattelige mængder af projekter, altid i høj kvalitet, udgik fra hans tegnestue. I København blev han husarkitekt for brygger Carl Jacobsen med udvidelsen af Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek som hovedværket. Kampmann var en ener. Hans enestående tegnetalent, de umådelige mængder af opmålinger og den flid, han i studieårene havde udvist betød, at han besad et formrepertoire, som uden videre kunne omsættes til konkret virkelighed. Hans sidste værk, Politigården i København, blev det mest omstridte. Kampmann døde midt i projekteringen i 1920, og en studerende, som undervejs i byggeprojektet fik sin afgang fra Kunstakademiet, Aage Rafn, stillede sig frem og tog æren af projektet. Dette forsøg på at tilrane sig en uretmæssig kunstnerisk ophavsret afvises i bogen.

Philip de Lange, en ung murermester, indvandrede til København fra Haag i 1729. Som en datidig gæstearbejder kom han for at deltage i genopbygningen af hovedstaden, der var blevet reduceret med en tredjedel efter den voldsomme brand i 1728. Der var brug for ham.Philip de Lange vendte aldrig tilbage til sit hjemland. Han blev i Danmark, hvor han hurtigt opbyggede en strålende karriere som en af tidens mest benyttede bygmestre. Det lykkedes ham at skabe gode forbindelser til især Søetaten og Admiralitetet, og det er da også hans bygninger på Holmen, som vi kender ham fra: Arsenalet, Hovedvagten, Mastekranen. Men Philip de Lange byggede også Asiatisk Kompagnis imposante hovedkvarter på Christianshavn foruden en stribe byhuse for borgerskabet og en enkelt herregård –Glorup på Fyn.Philip de Lange satte sit tydelige præg på den danske bygningskultur. Han bragte en international arkitektur til hovedstaden, som stadig står den dag i dag og minder os om, at vi er en del af verden.Vera Noldus, f. 1970 i Nederlandene, er uddannet cand.mag. og ph.d. i kulturarvsstudier og arkitekturhistorie fra universiteterne i Amsterdam og Utrecht, suppleret med en efteruddannelse i renovering fra Akademisk Arkitektforening.

Arkitekten M. G. Bindesbøll (1800-1856) er en af de vigtigste skikkelser i dansk arkitekturhistorie og i kraft af Thorvaldsens Museum den internationalt mest kendte danske arkitekt fra det 19. århundrede. Han er frontfigur i overgangen fra klassicisme til historicisme, men repræsenterer samtidig med byggerier som Landbohøjskolen og Lægeforeningens boliger en nøgtern tilgang, der foregriber det 20. århundredes mere pragmatiske arkitektursyn. Bindesbølls samlede værk, der spænder over en række stilarter, peger således i mange retninger. Fælles for projekterne er imidlertid en personlig og uortodoks omgang med historiske stilarter, der er karakteristisk for en romantisk kunstopfattelse, og som resulterer i en arkitektur med en symbolladet, undertiden overraskende moderne, karakter. Forfatter til monografien er lektor, ph.d., arkitekt maa Peter Thule Kristensen, der bl.a. har skrevet en ph.d.-afhandling om romantiske ledemotiver i arkitekturen, og som forsker og underviser i arkitekturhistorie på Kunstakademiets Arkitektskole. Bogen er rigt illustreret med nye fotografiske optagelser af den internationalt anerkendte arkitekt Jens Lindhe.
