This book focuses on the linguistic needs of university students enrolled in English Medium Instruction (EMI) programmes in which disciplinary subjects are taught in English, a practice that has significantly risen over the last 20 years. It includes seven online, self-study modules (Creating outlines, concept maps, writing definitions, writing summaries, reporting data, the language of presentations and writing abstracts) that were designed after conducting specific research into students¿ needs in terms of academic genres and language functions. All these modules were piloted with students in different degree programmes. The piloting confirmed the suitability of the materials for EMI undergraduate and postgraduate learners and the benefits of following a genre-based approach in this specific context.

This book brings together 18 theoretical and empirical chapters that analyse the role of emotion (expression, perception, processing) and identity (notions and representations, construction, conflict) in the process of learning a second language. Studies on the differences in emotionality between L1 and L2 suggest that in L2 there is an alteration that, in many cases, manifests itself as a decrease in the affective load, which can lead to a certain indifference to the emotional content transmitted and to a lesser involvement in communication. It is also known that emotion plays a fundamental role in the construction of identity in a second language in the shaping of the self that feels and communicates and in the ability to cope with the learning process. Most of the studies have focused on the understanding of these issues in balanced bilingual speakers, but there is little evidence on their functioning in speakers with other degrees of proficiency (the case of second language learners) and on their role in the learning process. Better understanding this question is fundamental for the improvement of everything related to second language acquisition. We need new and innovative approaches that lead to more effective programs, increased interest in language learning and the consolidation of multilingual societies.
This edited volume about multilingual family-school partnerships explores where systemic inequities exist at the school, district, or community level, and considers strategies that disrupt normative ways in which families are included in educational decisions. The chapters present frameworks and practices for engaging multilingual families.

Among Angela Carter's assortment of essays, novels, and short stories, critics have heralded The Bloody Chamber as a collection that is often resistant to patriarchal power while also indulging in both the macabre, and the opulent. Furthermore, the collection itself is often described as a space that, "deliberately defeats the reader's expectations by emancipating women's bodies from attributions of cultural shame, empowering women characters with independence and agency, and bitterly denouncing the arrogant cruelty of human predators" (Henke 48). Despite being touted as a feminist, Carter also received heavy backlash, as she eventually confessed that her short stories were often riddled with too much violence. In 1969, Carter won the Somerset Maugham award, and afterwards, lived in Japan for three years. As an expatriate, she studied Japanese manga and anime, with a focus on the masochism and sadism embedded within the comics (Barker 2). These observations and themes of masochism and sadism eventually threaded into her own fiction, and have roused interest and critique within several feminist communities.

Bonne lecture,

It is not considered necessary to offer an apology for the publication of a work on English grammar and composition for the Public Schools of Ontario. The plan of the work is inductive and practical, and the author has endeavored to make the book a useful one for the purposes of teaching. Every principle is presented through the observation of examples of good English. The study of grammar aids the student to master his mother-tongue, but its chief function is to secure mental discipline. For the development of the intellectual powers, the capable teacher, well furnished with rational methods, will find this study superior to all others. It is a study in recognizing similarities, in distinguishing differences, in making abstractions, in forming generalizations. The object of Parts I.-IV. of this book is to contribute something to the science of elementary English grammar. Part V. treats of composition. The usual exercises in completing halfbuilt sentences, in straightening out wrecks of sentences, in combining simple sentences into complex sentences, in expanding phrases into clauses, etc., will not be found therein. They have done quite enough towards fostering stupidity in our schools. The art of expression is acquired through steady practice, therefore pupils should write compositions not once a week, but during part of every period, about things which they understand. They should be taught good form in expression, and trained to correct their own exercises. This part of the work, though brief, will be found suggestive. Teachers and pupils have not been deprived of the pleasure and profit of an independent examination of the construction of the prose selections. This little volume owes something to several English grammars, and the debt is hereby acknowledged.
