"A step-by-step guide through the authors' inclusivity change process outlines seven milestones that will enable leaders to create a more inclusive school system"--
This book was begun as a result of the author's experience in teaching some classes in English in the night preparatory department of the Carnegie Technical Schools of Pittsburg. The pupils in those classes were all adults, and needed only such a course as would enable them to express themselves in clear and correct English. English Grammar, with them, was not to be preliminary to the grammar of another language, and composition was not to be studied beyond the everyday needs of the practical man. Great difficulty was experienced because of inability to secure a text that was suited to the needs of the class. A book was needed that would be simple, direct and dignified; that would cover grammar, and the essential principles of sentence structure, choice of words, and general composition; that would deal particularly with the sources of frequent error, and would omit the non-essential points; and, finally that would contain an abundance of exercises and practical work. It is with these ends in view that this book has been prepared. The parts devoted to grammar have followed a plan varying widely from that of most grammars, and an effort has been made to secure a more sensible and effective treatment. The parts devoted to composition contain brief expositions of only the essential principles of ordinary composition. Especial stress has been laid upon letter-writing, since this is believed to be one of the most practical fields for actual composition work. Because such a style seemed best suited to the general scheme and purpose of the book, the method of treatment has at times been intentionally rather formal. Abundant and varied exercises have been incorporated at frequent intervals throughout the text. So far as was practicable the exercises have been kept constructive in their nature, and upon critical points have been made very extensive.
This handbook examines what education would look like if it prepared gifted students to transform the world¿to make it a better place for all, not just for those who receive extra resources from schools in return for being labeled as ¿gifted.¿ The editors explore how transformationally gifted people can seek to make the world a better and more just place: they try to make a positive, meaningful, and possibly enduring contribution to changing things in the world that are not working. They do not view ¿giftedness¿ merely as a transaction whereby, in exchange for being labeled as ¿gifted,¿ they accrue benefits to themselves: such as a more prestigious education, more income, or residence in a more exclusive community. The overarching aim of this book is to present conceptions of what identification and instruction of the gifted would look like if the focus of gifted education was transformational rather than transactional. What if gifted education did not focus so much on acceleration vs.enrichment, or pull-out versus in-class integration, but rather on how to be gifted in giving back¿in using one¿s gifts to create a better world?

Huh is the Egyptian god of endlessness, creativity, fertility and regeneration. He is the deity Mary Myatt and John Tomsett have adopted as their god of the curriculum. Their Huh series of books focuses on how practitioners design the curriculum for the young people in their schools. The Huh project is founded on conversations with colleagues doing great work across the education sector. In SEND Huh, Mary Myatt and John Tomsett discuss curriculum provision for pupils with additional needs with some of the leading experts in the field. Mary and John interviewed pupils, parents, teachers, headteachers, CEOs, educational consultants and lecturers. They then edited the transcriptions of those interviews to provide an ambitious, thoughtful, nuanced and challenging vision of what the best possible provision looks like for children with additional learning needs. The challenging conversations that comprise SEND Huh paint an inspiring picture that is hugely hopeful for the future of SEND curriculum provision in our schools.
They Don't Behave for Me supports teachers with some key behavioural scenarios - ranging from classroom disruption and rudeness, to bullying, fights, and even a lack of overall behavioural strategy at a school level. Sam Strickland draws on his own experience to illustrate 50 common situations that he has had to resolve, seek support with, or offer advice on, and which most teachers will face at some point as they progress through their career into middle and senior leadership. Each scenario is broken down into an outline of the issue, a what to do in the immediate now, and a follow-up set of next steps. We should never condone poor behaviour - but how do we keep going and find the answers to resolve things when they go wrong? This book will guide you from some of the key challenges regularly faced by teachers towards your own approach to effective behavioural management.
Sometimes it seems only a nurse can bring technical information down to an understanding that an ordinary person can grasp. The Nurse Florence® book series provides high quality medical information that even a child can grasp. By introducing young kids to correct terminology and science concepts at an early age, we can help increase our children's health literacy level as well as help to prepare them for courses and jobs in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. This book is intended to help language teachers to work effectively and successfully with students who have specific learning differences (SpLD) such as dyslexia. The book takes an inclusive and practical approach to language teaching and encourages teachers to consider the effects that an SpLD could have on a language learner. It suggests strategies that can be implemented to enable learners to succeed both in the classroom and in formal assessment. The book places issues of language teaching for learners with an SpLD in a broad educational context and, in addition to practical advice on methodologies and classroom management, also discusses discourses of the field, the identification of SpLDs and facilitating progression.
A unique interdisciplinary book on multilingual education in Africa, examining its potential across several countries and sectors. The authors discuss various dual-language education models and offer insights on how to scale them locally.
The Palgrave Handbook of Disability and Communication covers a broad spectrum of topics related to how we perceive and understand disability and the language, constructs, constraints and communication behavior that shape disability discourse within society. The essays and original research presented in this volume address important matters of disability identity and intersectionality, broader cultural narratives and representation, institutional constructs and constraints, and points related to disability justice, advocacy, and public policy. In doing so, this book brings together a diverse group of over 40 international scholars to address timely problems and to promote disability justice by interrogating the way people communicate not only to people with disabilities, but also how we communicate about disability, and how people express themselves through their disabled identity.
As the title of this book is ambitious, and the sub-title may not suffice to indicate its limitations, it is well to warn the reader that he will find no exhaustive treatment of English speech sounds. That would have required knowledge greater than mine, and more space than was at my disposal. The book is an attempt to gain fellow-workers in a field which is unduly neglected, yet full of promise. It was in teaching the pronunciation of foreign languages that I first realised how important it is to acquire a knowledge of the sounds of the mother tongue. Before the learner can acquire the fresh habits of speech peculiar to the foreign language, his teacher must know clearly what distinguishes the new sounds from those familiar in the mother tongue, for only then can the foreign pronunciation be imparted in a methodical way. The book may therefore be useful to the teacher of foreign languages; but it is intended also for a larger circle. In our Training Colleges, noted for earnest work, the importance of the spoken language has long been felt, and much attention has been devoted to the cultivation of the voice. My object has not been to write on voice production, though occasional reference to the subject has been made. It has not been my aim to say how the language ought to be spoken, to improve upon the ordinary speech of our day, but to represent it to the best of my ability, and to enable others to distinguish speech sounds when they hear them. If it be desirable to improve upon our speech, its present condition and tendencies must first be determined.
The concept of "Me 2 We" reflects my belief that inclusion is not just about accommodating individual differences; it is about creating a sense of belonging and community for all students. By shifting our focus from "me" to "we," we can build a culture of empathy, collaboration, and mutual respect that supports the growth and development of every learner. This book is intended for educators, administrators, and anyone who is committed to creating a more inclusive and equitable society.
Special Education: What & Why? is a priority for schools, educators and parents. Special education creates possibilities for students, fostering achievement and accomplishment. Students with impairments have a substantial number of challenges, but they can attain their full academic potential provided they get adequate assistance in overcoming these challenges. Only when these people have access to the specialized instruction and support provided via special education will they be able to attain academic and social success? When students with disabilities can accomplish their educational objectives with the assistance of special education teachers, it may improve their sense of self-worth and their sense of accomplishment. This, in turn, may positively impact the student's overall health. This book explores special education's what, why, and significance, including real-world examples and lessons learned from those experiences.@Authors
This book, Design for Sustainable Inclusion, was inspired and informed by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. These include, among others, ¿good health and well-being¿, ¿reduced inequalities¿ and ¿sustainable cities and communities¿. The Cambridge Workshop on Universal Access and Assistive Technology (CWUAAT) 2023 invited participants from a wide variety of disciplines to contribute to the discussion on this topic. This book represents the papers presented at this conference, chosen by peer review by an international panel of currently active researchers. The chapters within the book provide a unique insight into current national and international research in the fields of inclusive design, universal access, and assistive and rehabilitative technology. The main sections of the book reflect the following key themes:¿ Understanding people¿ Designing for an ageing population¿ Inclusive built environments¿ Healthcare¿ Assistive technology¿ Design methods¿ Education and trainingWe hope that this book will be useful to researchers, teachers, students and the general public who are interested in inclusive design and sustainable development.
