It was about five years ago, walking around my local park on a beautiful Saturday morning when I suddenly realized something was dreadfully wrong. On the soccer fields, kids from a local club were waiting in lines to dribble a ball around a set of cones. On another field, players from a nearby high school football team were waiting in line to run through a set of tires. On the baseball diamond, batters were hitting balls off tees. On the tennis court, the instructor was tossing the ball underhand to a player attempting to repeat the same forehand stroke over and over into an empty court.Soccer, football, baseball, and tennis are incredibly exciting, dynamic activities defined by their interpersonal actions: attacker vs defender, pitcher vs hitter, server vs receiver. It seems like almost every week we see a highlight of an athlete from one of these sports doing something new and unexpected. So, why then do we practice them in such a static, isolated, and choreographed manner? If an alien from another planet came and watched, would they think the goal of sports here on earth was to defeat inanimate pieces of rubber? Why do we insist on teaching movement skills this way? From golf lessons to soccer practice to learning to do pottery, the dominant view has been that we become skillful by trying to repeat the one, "correct" technique given to us by a coach or an instructor, over and over until we get it right. In baseball, tennis, and golf we learn THE way to swing. In soccer and basketball, we learn THE correct way to dribble a ball. In pottery, we learn THE way to position our hands. We reduce these creative, interactive, dynamic activities down to dull, isolated fundamentals so that they can be drilled and mastered. For a long time, we have assumed that decomposition and repetition rule the day if you want to be an elite performer. In this book, I want to introduce you to a revolution in the way we think about learning to move and act in the world. A radical change in sports skills training that has inspired Chelsea coach Thomas Tuchel to have his players hold tennis balls in their hands during soccer practice, has led Philadelphia Phillies' instructor Jason Ochart to conduct baseball practice using hula hoops where batters try to swing like Happy Gilmore, and has introduced a new practice activity to tennis great Novak Djokovic's repertoire that involves trying to deliberately pound the ball into the court.
The number of men who "keep fit" in this country has been surprisingly few, while the number of those who have made good resolutions about keeping fit is astonishingly large. Reflection upon this fact has convinced the writer that the reason for this state of affairs lies partly in our inability to visualize the conditions and our failure to impress upon all men the necessity of physical exercise. Still more, however, does it rest upon our failure to make a scientific study of reducing all the variety of proposals to some standard of exceeding simplicity. Present systems have not produced results, no matter what the reason. Hence this book with its review of the situation and its final practical conclusions I believe that a nation should be made up of people who individually possess clean, strong bodies and pure minds; who have respect for their own rights and the rights of others and possess the courage and strength to redress wrongs; and, finally, in whom self-consciousness is sufficiently powerful to preserve these qualities. I believe in education, patriotism, justice, and loyalty. I believe in civil and religious liberty and in freedom of thought and speech. I believe in chivalry that protects the weak and preserves veneration and love for parents, and in the physical strength that makes that chivalry effective. I believe in that clear thinking and straight speaking which conquers envy, slander, and fear. I believe in the trilogy of faith, hope, and charity, and in the dignity of labor; finally, I believe that through these and education true democracy may come to the world.
The Underground Archive is the first attempt to document the Shoah from the perspective of those affected and directly during the events. Before World War II, Poland was home to 3.3 million Jews, and Warsaw was the cultural, religious and political center of this diverse community. A year after the German war of aggression began, the Nazis forced the Jewish population into a sealed-off part of the city. The historian Emanuel Ringelblum then stimulated an unprecedented project: a group working in secret, documenting the daily life of the ghetto under the code name Oneg Shabbat (Joy of Shabbat). Cut off from the world, it collected and produced a wealth of material. With the beginning of the systematic murder of Polish Jews, they unwillingly became chroniclers of the Shoah, which they themselves, with few exceptions, did not survive. After the war, a large part of the archive, buried in tin crates and milk cans, was recovered from under the ruins of the ghetto. With its approximately 35,000 preserved pages, it is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The volume is published on the occasion of the exhibition of the same name, which the NS Documentation Center Munich will open in cooperation with the Jewish Historical Institute Warsaw in June 2023.

"In the age of hot takes and trolling, this expansive and funny study of the art and science of trash talk reveals something essential about public life--and even human nature. In the modern economy and culture, fame and virality have become increasingly difficult to separate from success. From athletes to comedians to politicians to big-ticket CEOs, everyone seemingly has to manage their brand. Saying the wrong thing is often more profitable than saying the right one. We are all, it seems, engaged in a giant insult comedy roast, even when we don't want to be. The tradition of talking trash goes back to ancient Greece, and is not always innocent fun. Who gets to do it to whom, how, and when? In this energetic and wide-ranging book, Rafi Kohan takes the measure of this sneakily important practice. Talking to historians, athletes, comedians, and more, he describes what they do and why they do it, and also asks why it's so central to the human experience. From military stress tests at Fort Bragg to the basketball court to the Jeff Ross Roast Battle, he writes about what's funny and what's mean, where the line is, and the consequences--sometimes severe--of crossing it. Trash Talk is full of good jokes and bad jokes, name-calling and moralizing. But it's also belonging, freedom, and how to live with other people"--
Michael Haas sensitively records the experiences of the composers who fled the Nazis, escaping Hitler's Germany to make new lives across the globe. Haas traces the distinctive contribution these composers made to the twentieth-century soundscape?and offers a moving record of the incalculable effects of war on culture.
The Last Ghetto is a social and cultural history of Terezín, or Theresienstadt, a transit ghetto for Central and Western European Jews prior to their deportation for murder in the East. It offers the first analytical case study of a Holocaust victim society that explains human behavior in extremis, and demonstrates how prisoners created new social hierarchies, reshaped their conceptions of family, and developed new loyalties. Based on extensive research in archives around the world and empathetic reading of victim testimonies, this history of everyday life in a prisoner society reveals the many forms of agency and adaptation in Nazi concentration camps and ghettos.

**A Telegraph Best History Book 2023 and Spectator Book of the Year**The inspirational story of the ordinary people who forged the documents that saved thousands of Jewish lives in World War Two.'Powerful ... gripping ... inspiring' JONATHAN DIMBLEBYBetween 1940 and 1943, a small group of Polish diplomats and Jewish activists in Switzerland engaged in a wholly remarkable - and until now, almost completely unknown - humanitarian operation. Under the leadership of the Polish Ambassador, Aleksander Lados, they undertook a systematic programme of forging identity documents for Latin American countries, which were then smuggled into German-occupied Europe to save the lives of thousands of Jews facing extermination in the Holocaust. The Lados operation was one of the largest rescue missions of the entire war, and The Forgers tells this extraordinary story for the first time. We follow the desperate bids of Jews to obtain these life-saving documents, and their painful uncertainty over whether they will be granted protection from the Nazis' murderous fury. And we witness the quiet heroism of those who decided to act in an attempt to save thousands of lives.'Fascinating' The Times'Remarkable' Sunday Times'As gripping as it is moving' JULIA BOYD'An astonishing book' KATJA HOYER
