This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 24th Conference on Artificial Intelligence, Canadian AI 2011, held in St. John's, Canada, in May 2011. The 23 revised full papers presented together with 22 revised short papers and 5 papers from the graduate student symposium were carefully reviewed and selected from 81 submissions. The papers cover a broad range of topics presenting original work in all areas of artificial intelligence, either theoretical or applied.

The three-volume set LNCS 6675, 6676 and 6677 constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 8th International Symposium on Neural Networks, ISNN 2011, held in Guilin, China, in May/June 2011. The total of 215 papers presented in all three volumes were carefully reviewed and selected from 651 submissions. This Festschrift volume, published in honor of Michael Gelfond on the occasion of his 65th birthday, contains a collection of papers written by his closest friends and colleagues. Several of these papers were presented during the Symposium on Constructive Mathematics in Computer Science, held in Lexington, KY, USA on October 25-26, 2010. The 27 scientific papers included in the book focus on answer set programming. The papers are organized in sections named "Foundations: ASP and Theories of LP, KR, and NMR", "ASP and Dynamic Domains", and "ASP - Applications and Tools".

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 14th International Conference on Formal Grammar 2009, held in Bordeaux, France, in July 2009. The 13 revised full papers presented, including two invited talks, were carefully reviewed and selected from 26 submissions. These articles in this book give an overview of new and original research on formal grammar, mathematical linguistics and the application of formal and mathematical methods to the study of natural language.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the International ECML/PKDD Workshop on Privacy and Security Issues in Data Mining and Machine Learning, PSDML 2010, held in Barcelona, Spain, in September 2010.The 11 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 21 submissions. The papers range from data privacy to security applications, focusing on detecting malicious behavior incomputer systems.

This two-volume set, consisting of LNCS 6608 and LNCS 6609, constitutes the thoroughly refereed proceedings of the 12th International Conference on Computer Linguistics and Intelligent Processing, held in Tokyo, Japan, in February 2011.The 74 full papers, presented together with 4 invited papers, were carefully reviewed and selected from 298 submissions. The contents have been ordered according to the following topical sections: lexical resources; syntax and parsing; part-of-speech tagging and morphology; word sense disambiguation; semantics and discourse; opinion mining and sentiment detection; text generation; machine translation and multilingualism; information extraction and information retrieval; text categorization and classification; summarization and recognizing textual entailment; authoring aid, error correction, and style analysis; and speech recognition and generation.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 17th European Conference on Machine Learning, ECML 2006, held, jointly with PKDD 2006. The book presents 46 revised full papers and 36 revised short papers together with abstracts of 5 invited talks, carefully reviewed and selected from 564 papers submitted. The papers present a wealth of new results in the area and address all current issues in machine learning.

The sequencing of the genomes of humans and other organisms is inspiring the developmentofnew statisticalandbioinformatics tools that we hope canmodify the current understanding of human diseases and therapies. As our knowledge about the human genome increases so does our belief that to fully grasp the mechanisms of diseases we need to understand their genetic basis and the p- teomicsbehind them and to integratethe knowledgegeneratedin thelaboratory in clinical settings. The new genetic and proteomic data has brought forth the possibility of developing new targets and therapies based on these ?ndings, of implementing newly developed preventive measures, and also of discovering new research approaches to old problems. To fully enhance our understanding of disease processes, to develop more and better therapies to combat and cure diseases, and to develop strategies to prevent them, there is a need for synergy of the disciplines involved, medicine, molecular biology, biochemistry and computer science, leading to more recent ?elds such as bioinformatics and biomedical informatics. The 6th International Symposium on Biological and Medical Data Analysis aimed to become a place where researchersinvolved in these diversebut incre- ingly complementary areas could meet to present and discuss their scienti?c results. The papers in this volume discuss issues from statistical models to arc- tectures and applications to bioinformatics and biomedicine. They cover both practical experience and novel research ideas and concepts.

Context is of crucial importance for research and applications in many disciplines, as evidenced by many workshops, symposia, seminars, and conferences on specific aspects of context. The International and Interdisciplinary Conference on Modeling and Using Context (CONTEXT), the oldest conference series focusing on context, provides a unique interdisciplinary emphasis, bringing together participants from a wide range of disciplines, including artificial intelligence, cognitive science, computer science, linguistics, organizational science, philosophy, psychology, ubiquitous computing, and application areas such as medicine and law, to discuss and report on context-related research and projects. Previous CONTEXT conferences were held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (1997), Trento, Italy (1999, LNCS 1688), Dundee, UK (2001, LNCS 2116), and Palo Alto, USA (2003, LNCS 2680). CONTEXT 2005 was held in Paris, France during July 5-8, 2005. There was a strong response to the CONTEXT 2005 Call for Papers, with 120 submissions received. A careful review process assessed all submissions, with each paper first reviewed by the international Program Committee, and then reviewer discussions were initiated as needed to assure that the final decisions carefully considered all aspects of each paper. Reviews of submissions by the Program Chairs were supervised independently and anonymously, to assure fair consideration of all work. Out of the 120 submissions, 23 were selected as full papers for oral presentation, and 20 were selected as full papers for poster presentation. These outstanding papers are presented in this proceedings.

The Pacific-Asia Conference on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining (PAKDD) is a leading international conference in the area of data mining and knowledge discovery. It provides an international forum for researchers and industry practitioners to share their new ideas, original research results and practical development experiences from all KDD-related areas including data mining, data warehousing, machine learning, databases, statistics, knowledge acquisition and automatic scientific discovery, data visualization, causality induction, and knowledge-based systems. This year's conference (PAKDD 2005) was the ninth of the PAKDD series, and carried the tradition in providing high-quality technical programs to facilitate research in knowledge discovery and data mining. It was held in Hanoi, Vietnam at the Melia Hotel, 18-20 May 2005. We are pleased to provide some statistics about PAKDD 2005. This year we received 327 submissions (a 37% increase over PAKDD 2004), which is the highest number of submissions since the first PAKDD in 1997) from 28 countries/regions: Australia (33), Austria (1), Belgium (2), Canada (11), China (91), Switzerland (2), France (9), Finland (1), Germany (5), Hong Kong (11), Indonesia (1), India (2), Italy (2), Japan (21), Korea (51), Malaysia (1), Macau (1), New Zealand (3), Poland (4), Pakistan (1), Portugal (3), Singapore (12), Taiwan (19), Thailand (7), Tunisia (2), UK (5), USA (31), and Vietnam (9). The submitted papers went through a rigorous reviewing process. Each submission was reviewed by at least two reviewers, and most of them by three or four reviewers.

Many approaches have already been proposed for classification and modeling in the literature. These approaches are usually based on mathematical mod­ els. Computer systems can easily handle mathematical models even when they are complicated and nonlinear (e.g., neural networks). On the other hand, it is not always easy for human users to intuitively understand mathe­ matical models even when they are simple and linear. This is because human information processing is based mainly on linguistic knowledge while com­ puter systems are designed to handle symbolic and numerical information. A large part of our daily communication is based on words. We learn from various media such as books, newspapers, magazines, TV, and the Inter­ net through words. We also communicate with others through words. While words play a central role in human information processing, linguistic models are not often used in the fields of classification and modeling. If there is no goal other than the maximization of accuracy in classification and model­ ing, mathematical models may always be preferred to linguistic models. On the other hand, linguistic models may be chosen if emphasis is placed on interpretability.

This book constitutes the proceedings of the International Symposium on Neural N- works (ISNN 2004) held in Dalian, Liaoning, China duringAugust 19-21, 2004. ISNN 2004 received over 800 submissions from authors in ?ve continents (Asia, Europe, North America, South America, and Oceania), and 23 countries and regions (mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, South Korea, Japan, Singapore, India, Iran, Israel, Turkey, Hungary, Poland, Germany, France, Belgium, Spain, UK, USA, Canada, Mexico, - nezuela, Chile, andAustralia). Based on reviews, the Program Committee selected 329 high-quality papers for presentation at ISNN 2004 and publication in the proceedings. The papers are organized into many topical sections under 11 major categories (theo- tical analysis; learning and optimization; support vector machines; blind source sepa- tion,independentcomponentanalysis,andprincipalcomponentanalysis;clusteringand classi?cation; robotics and control; telecommunications; signal, image and time series processing; detection, diagnostics, and computer security; biomedical applications; and other applications) covering the whole spectrum of the recent neural network research and development. In addition to the numerous contributed papers, ?ve distinguished scholars were invited to give plenary speeches at ISNN 2004. ISNN 2004 was an inaugural event. It brought together a few hundred researchers, educators,scientists,andpractitionerstothebeautifulcoastalcityDalianinnortheastern China. It provided an international forum for the participants to present new results, to discuss the state of the art, and to exchange information on emerging areas and future trends of neural network research. It also created a nice opportunity for the participants to meet colleagues and make friends who share similar research interests.

The Intelligent Data Engineering and Automated Learning (IDEAL) conf- ence series began in 1998 in Hong Kong, when the world started to experience information and data explosion and to demand for better, intelligent meth- ologies and techniques. It has since developed, enjoyed success in recent years, and become a unique annual international forum dedicated to emerging topics and technologies in intelligent data analysis and mining, knowledge discovery, automated learning and agent technology, as well as interdisciplinary appli- tions, especially bioinformatics. These techniques are common and applicable to many ?elds. The multidisciplinary nature of research nowadays is pushing the boundaries and one of the principal aims of the IDEAL conference is to p- mote interactions and collaborations between disciplines, which are bene?cial and bringing fruitful solutions. This volume of Lecture Notes in Computer Science contains accepted papers presented at IDEAL 2004, held in Exeter, UK, August 25-27, 2004. The conf- ence received 272 submissions from all over the world, which were subsequently refereed by the ProgramCommittee. Among them 124 high-quality papers were accepted and included in the proceedings. IDEAL 2004 enjoyed outstanding keynote talks by distinguished guest speakers,Jim Austin, Mark Girolami, Ross King, Lei Xu and Robert Esnouf. This year IDEAL also teamed up with three international journals, namely the International Journal of Neural Systems,the Journal of Mathematical M- elling and Algorithms,and Neural Computing & Applications. Three special issues on Bioinformatics, Learning Algorithms,and Neural Networks & Data Mining, respectively, have been scheduled for selected papers from IDEAL 2004.

This volume spans the whole field of computational logic seen from the point of view of logic programming. The topics addressed range from issues concerning the development of programming languages in logic and the application of computational logic to real-life problems, to philosophical studies of the field at the other end of the spectrum. The articles presented cover the contributions of computational logic to databases and artificial intelligence with particular emphasis on automated reasoning, reasoning about actions and change, natural languages, and learning.Together with its companion volume, LNAI 2407, this book commemorates the 60th birthday of Bob Kowalski as one of the founders of and contributors to computational logic.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 13th International Conference on Automated Deduction, CADE-13, held in July/August 1996 in New Brunswick, NJ, USA, as part of FLoC '96.The volume presents 46 revised regular papers selected from a total of 114 submissions in this category; also included are 15 selected system descriptions and abstracts of two invited talks. The CADE conferences are the major forum for the presentation of new results in all aspects of automated deduction. Therefore, the volume is a timely report on the state-of-the-art in the area.

The dominant theme of this book is to introduce the different path planning methods and present some of the most appropriate ones for robotic routing; methods that are capable of running on a variety of robots and are resistant to disturbances; being real-time, being autonomous, and the ability to identify high-risk areas and risk management are the other features that will be mentioned in the introduction of the methods. The introduction of the profound significance of the robots and delineation of the navigation and routing theme is provided in the first chapter of the book. The second chapter is concerned with the subject of routing in unknown environments. In the first part of this chapter, the family of bug algorithms including are described. In the following, several conventional methods are submitted. The last part of this chapter is dedicated to the introduction of two recently developed routing methods. In Chapter 3, routing is reviewed in the known environment in which the robot either utilizes the created maps by extraneous sources or makes use of the sensor in order to prepare the maps from the local environment. The robot path planning relying on the robot vision sensors and applicable computing hardware are concentrated in the fourth chapter. The first part of this chapter deals with routing methods supported mapping capabilities. The second part manages the routing dependent on the vision sensor, typically known as the best sensor, within the routing subject. The movement of two-dimensional robots with two or three degrees of freedom is analyzed within the third part of this chapter. In Chapter 5, the performance of a few of the foremost important routing methods initiating from the second to fourth chapters is conferred regarding the implementation in various environments. The first part of this chapter is engaged in the implementation of the algorithms Bug1, Bug2, and Distbug on the pioneering robot. In the second part, a theoretical technique is planned to boost the robot''s performance in line with obstacle collision avoidance. This method, underlying the tangential escape, seeks to proceed with the robot through various obstacles with curved corners. In the third and fourth parts of this chapter, path planning in different environments is preceded in the absence and the presence of danger space. Accordingly, four approaches, named artificial fuzzy potential field, linguistic technique, Markov decision making processes, and fuzzy Markov decision making have been proposed in two following parts and enforced on the Nao humanoid robot.

Als Lehrbuch beruht es auf den Erfahrungen einer umfangreichen Unterrichtspraxis, es ist aber auch fur den Steuerungsfachmann geeignet, der einen systematischen Einstieg in die aktuelle Programmierung und Bustechnik sucht. Der Weiterentwicklung des Systems wurde durch neue Abschnitte uber OPC-Automation-Schnittstelle und den Busstandard PROFINET Rechnung getragen. Bei den Ablaufsteuerungen wird jetzt auch der Einsatz des neuen Bedienfeldes berucksichtigt.

WHEN DAVID CONTACTED ME to ask about writing the foreword for his MINDSTORMS book, my first thought was, *~other book about LEGO robotics-is there still some- thing to write about it?"e; In fact, the shelves of the bookstores now offer a wide selection of books about building robots with the LEGO MINDSTORMS system. Many of them are actually very good books, which cover the matter quite deeply and exhaustively. However, a few lines below in his e-mail, David explained to me that the book was to deal exclusively with robotic sumo. That raised my interest and made me feel sud- denly excited, because I love sumo. I strongly believe that building a robot to attend a sumo contest is one of the best experiences for hobby robotics fans, because it's both extremely instructive and a lot of fun! Let me clarify my thought. Generally speaking, attending a contest is a very good way to learn about robotics. First of all, the contest helps the builder to keep focused on a specific goal. In fact, many beginners get lost in simply deciding what to build- either getting quickly bored by too simple projects or frustrated by too complex ones. In the second place, the rules of the tournament state very precisely what is allowed and what is not, providing a context to the designer's choices and narrowing the possibilities.
