The book presents the recent advances on testing and experimentation in civil engineering, especially in the branches of geotechnics, transportation, hydraulics, and natural resources. It includes advances in physical modelling, monitoring techniques, data acquisition and analysis, and provides an invaluable contribution for the installation of new civil engineering experimental facilities. The first part of the book covers the latest advances in testing and experimentation in key domains of geotechnics: soil mechanics and geotechnical engineering, rock mechanics and rock engineering, and engineering geology. Some of the topics covered include new developments in topographic survey acquisition for applied mapping and in situ geotechnical investigations; laboratory and in situ tests to estimate the relevant parameters needed to model the behaviour of rock masses and land structures; monitoring and inspection techniques designed for offshore wind foundations. The second part of the book highlights the relevance of testing and monitoring in transportation. Full-scale accelerated pavement testing, and instrumentation becomes even more important nowadays when, for sustainability purposes, non-traditional materials are used in road and airfield pavements. Innovation in testing and monitoring pavements and railway tracks is also developed in this part of the book. Intelligent traffic systems are the new traffic management paradigm, and an overview of new solutions is addressed here. Finally, in the third part of the book, trends in the field and laboratory measurements and corresponding data analysis are presented according to the different hydraulic domains addressed in this publication, namely maritime hydraulics, surface water and river hydraulics and urban water.

The fifth edition of this textbook has been completely revised and significantly extended in order to reflect the revolution of geodetic technologies, methods and applications during the last decade. The Global Geodetic Observing System established by the IAG utilizes a variety of techniques to determine the geometric shape of the earth and its kinematics, the variations of earth rotation, and the earth's gravity field. The societal importance of geodetic products was highlighted by the UN resolution on the Global Geodetic Reference Frame. In this context, both space and terrestrial techniques play a fundamental role. Recent space missions are monitoring climate-relevant processes such as mass transport in the Earth system and sea level changes. The analysis of the time variation of the geodetic products provides the link to neighboring geosciences and contributes to proper modelling of geodynamic processes. New satellite mission concepts and novel technologies such as quantum gravimetry and optical clocks show great potential to further improve the geodetic observing system in the future. The book especially addresses graduate students in the fields of geodesy, geophysics, surveying engineering, geomatics, and space navigation. It should also serve as a reference for geoscientists and engineers facing geodetic problems in their professional work. The book follows the principal directions of geodesy, providing the theoretical background as well as the principles of measurement and evaluation methods, which is enriched with numerous figures. An extensive reference list supports further studies.

PRACTICAL GUIDE TO DIAGNOSING STRUCTURAL MOVEMENT IN BUILDINGSConcise and readable practitioner focused guide to diagnosing the causes of cracks and movement in buildingsThe expanded and updated Second Edition of Practical Guide to Diagnosing Structural Movement in Buildings shows how movement can manifest as cracking in the building fabric and provides a rigorous, structured approach to understanding the evidence to ensure the surveyor can confidently diagnose the cause and impact of any structural movement they encounter. The book is written in four parts, with part one describing the key principles of movement and cracking. Parts two and three describe the main features of common forms of movement and the associated crack patterns, with part two covering causes other than ground or foundation movement and part three covering movement caused by ground or foundations. Part four briefly describes the techniques used to arrest further movement or repair damage caused by movement.Topics covered in Practical Guide to Diagnosing Structural Movement in Buildings include:* First principles, including crack patterns and cracks, rotational movement, weak routes, load distribution, and movement and orientation* Expansion cracking, cavity wall tie corrosion, roof spread, springing from deflected beams, and overloaded floors and beams* Clay heave, uneven loading, eccentric loading on foundations, drains and drain trenches, differential foundation movement, and load concentrations on foundations* Repair methods, including stitching in brickwork, reinforcing brick mortar joints, tie bars, restraint straps, underpinning, grouting, and root barriersPrimarily intended for the relatively inexperienced surveyor or engineer, as well as undergraduate students, Practical Guide to Diagnosing Structural Movement in Buildings focuses on identification and diagnosis, helping to correctly diagnose problems while also demonstrating a methodical approach to show and record how the diagnosis was reached, which is critical in client satisfaction.

Academic Paper from the year 2018 in the subject Business economics - Investment and Finance, grade: 3.0, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (College of Arts and Built Environment), course: Constuction Management, language: English, abstract: Cost estimation models deal with arrangement of data, assumptions and equations that permit the translation of physical resources or characteristics into cost. These models serve as framework for forecasting the probable cost of proposed construction projects. They can be classified as either traditional or non-traditional depending on the cost variable formulation. However, in the Ghanaian construction industry, quantity surveyors traditionally estimate the initial cost of building projects using the traditional models, which have been criticized overtime for its inaccuracies. The purpose of the study is to provide account on cost estimation modeling as the basis for proposing strategies for the utilization of non-traditional cost estimation models. Specifically, it intends to determine the awareness level of quantity surveying professionals on cost estimation models; to identify the barriers of cost estimation model's utilization; identify drivers of cost estimation model's utilization and finally propose strategies for the utilization of non-traditional cost estimation models. Construction projects require more capital and it demands that a cost plan is undertaken before its execution. The cost of construction projects is mostly needed by prospective clients to know the level of funds needed to handle cash flow. Gunayin and Dogan argued that cost estimation is a major significant criterion in making decisions at the early phases of a building construction process which involves designing, bidding traditionally and constructing. It is vital to prepare cost estimations with high level of accuracy at every stage of the construction process especially initial stages. The exact cost estimates are necessary to the successful execution of every project. Time, cost and quality play a vital role in the success of every project, hence ideal to perform them at the minimum time, cost and quality. The preliminary estimate of cost pertaining to construction projects is seen as a cost limitation for a project. Any inaccurate estimation caused by errors in the initial estimation process will bring about frustrations and dissatisfaction to clients. In an effort to prepare cost estimates within an unfavourable time frame, some cost prediction methods are used. However, these methods have some problems which have effects on the accuracy of the cost estimates.
