    Denne bog handler om Preben Louw Pedersen. Navnet siger måske ikke så mange så meget. Men rigtig mange har stiftet bekendtskab med de små servicebusser med lav indstigningshøjde, der kørte mange steder i Danmark fra begyndelsen af 1990'erne og frem. Og det var netop Preben Louw Pedersen, der stod bag udviklingen af servicebusserne. I bogen følger vi Preben Louw Pedersen gennem det meste af hans liv. Han var som ung ingeniør ansat hos flere virksomheder. Senere kom han videre til Vognfabrikken Scandia i Randers, som i 1975 købte Aabenraa Karrosserifabrik og udnævnte Preben Louw Pedersen til direktør. Han og familien flyttede til Aabenraa, men Preben Louw Pedersen syntes, at Scandia styrede ham for stramt. Derfor begyndte han i 1979 for sig selv og året efter oprettede han sin egen karrosserivirksomhed, Alubus. Desværre førte flere uheldige omstændigheder til, at det ikke gik så godt, og i 1982 gik Alubus konkurs. Efter kort tid kom Preben Louw Pedersen i 1983 til DAB i Silkeborg. Her kom han omsider på rette hylde, idet han fik lov til at stå for flere udviklingsprojekter, deriblandt servicebussen. Desværre blev Preben Louw Pedersen ramt af sygdom i 1987. Idérigdommen blev heldigvis ikke ramt og for at aflaste ham, blev der ansat en ung ingeniør, Lars Overgaard. Sammen fortsatte de to udviklingsarbejdet og efter Preben Louw Pedersens død i 2000, fortsatte Lars Overgaard arbejdet.

Men disse skibe var indrettet på en sådan måde, at det var behageligt, - ja endda en god oplevelse for passagererne at være ombord på, selv om rejsen kunne tage flere døgn.De bevægede sig dygtigt i søen, og øjet fik sit i form af elegant og karakterfuld formgivning af skibet såvel udvendigt som indvendigt. Sørejsen på sådan et fartøj var en oplevelse, begyndelsen på ferien og et minde for livet.Flere af de skibe, som "sejler" i denne bog lever op til ovenstående.

    En skibsdrengs første møde med Østen: Den femte dag passerede vi Ceylon, og mens jeg kiggede på øens høje bjerge blev jeg pludselig te-tørstig. Kort efter blev der helt mørkt, og et enormt uvejr med mange lyn og torden ramte os, men søen var nærmest blik, så det gav ingen søgang. Derefter sejlede vi ind i Den Bengalske Bugt i fint vejr, og et par dage senere kunne jeg allerede lugte/dufte land. Det var en af mine rejsers største oplevelser. Østens krydderier hang i luften, allerede før vi så de første måger. Samtidigt lyste bølgerne smukt af morild. Vi tog lods ombord kl. 18.00 og lå for anker på Reden tre kvarter senere. Det lykkedes at få en servicebåd i land. Som jeg noterede i dagbogen: ”Til aften endelig i land til Østens mystik, hvor vi så mange smukke piger og kørte i Ritzau”. Bogen her indeholder otte fortællinger om livet på de store have om bord på ØK´s skibe i 1960´erne. De er skrevet af tidligere ØK-ansatte: kaptajner, styrmænd, maskinmestre, stewardesse og skibs- drenge. De omhandler især de oplevelser og den dannelse, livet til søs har givet dem, og den betydning det har fået for deres videre færd i livet. Herudover er der en beretning om Museum Silkeborgs udstilling ”Fra dreng til mand. Dannelsesrejse på verdenshavene” om en kammer-drengs tre rejser med ØK.

    Da Kalvehavebanen åbnede i 1897, stiftede en kreds af mønboer Møns Dampskibsselskab, der sejlede fra Stege til Kalvehave med dampskibet "Stege". For mønboerne var det vigtigt, at forbindelsen blev stabil - også når farvandene frøs til. Og at forbindelsen blev styret fra Møn - og absolut ikke fra Sjælland. I begyndelsen var det primære at få post og gods frem. Passagertrafik spillede en sekundær rolle - at rejse var ikke en dagligdags begivenhed. Men uanset hvad der blev transporteret, var ruten Møns livsnerve igennem mange år. Vi følger selskabet fra den første tur over en årrække med fremgang og til de sidste år, hvor konkurrencen fra bilerne prægede selskabets dagligdag. I 1934 måtte det give op og realisere sine aktiver. I de godt 37 år selskabet sejlede, nåede det at anskaffe tre dampskibe, en motorbåd, et motorskib og en pram. Det var nok det sidst anskaffede dampskib "Codan", som de fleste forbinder med Møns Dampskibsselskab. Skibet var efter forholdene et stort og godt skib, men også meget dyrt at sejle med. Selskabet forbindes også med Steges - nu nedrevne - karakteristiske havnebygning kaldet Havneslottet. Det var ud for denne bygning skibene lagde til. I bogen omtales også diverse havneforhold i Stege og i Kalvehave. Denne bog gør ikke krav på at være en skibsteknisk redegørelse, men er en gennemgang af dagligdagen og milepælene i dampskibsselskabets historie.
