Emma would sacrifice anything for her small daughter Ruby and husband Leo. But practically all of the information she gave them about herself was false.

Leo deals with his wife's critical sickness by studying and writing about her life, which is what he does best. The woman he loves doesn't actually exist, he learns as he begins to piece together the facts. Even her name is a fabrication.
