Known as the City of Brotherly Love, Philadelphia is one of the most colorful and proud metropolises in the United States. From the original Lenape Indians residing alongside the Delaware River, to the colony of New Sweden, to becoming the first capital and colonial center of the United States, Philly has gone through many changes. Fueled by immigrant dreams that laid the groundwork for dozens of distinct and unique areas, the city is many things to many people; a "city of neighborhood", a living museum of colonial architecture and artifacts; a dynamic canvas for art, music, and other cultural products; and a mecca for sports fans. Earlier waves of Italians, Irish, Dutch, German, and African Americans have made way for newer arrivals from Asia, Latin America, and elsewhere. Together, they keep Philly pride as solid and inspiring today as the Rocky statue that symbolizes them.
