In the Swiss province, at the foot of picturesque mountains, on a quiet lake, a biotope of avant-garde design has formed. The self-proclaimed "Poster Town" Lucerne has managed to merge the boundaries between art and design, creating a contemporary design phenomenon in the process. We are talking about the posters for the Neubad Cultural Center, which have long since found their way out of the valley and all over the world. The posters, in minimalist black and white, not only set contemporary design trends, but playfully transcend the boundaries of our perceptual habits. Progressive illustration and experimental typography create subcultural codes on a highly cultural level that remain unpretentious despite their artistic daring. The Neubad Poster is an aesthetic phenomenon and an expression of a social change that has always been expressed in fashion, music, design-in other words, in the zeitgeist. The book as a collection of curated pieces that in itself formulated a new expression of this emerged aesthetic.
Since the late 1980s, American jeweler Keith Lewis (*1959) has been consistently tackling issues of Queer identity and politics in his figurative and narrative jewelry, including a groundbreaking series of memorial jewels addressing the impact of the AIDS crisis on himself and his community. Often witty, sometimes shocking, frequently erotic, and surprisingly moving, his jewelry is an act of remembering and witnessing, and a joyous assertion that desire and pleasure, wonderful ends in themselves, can collapse historical distance and connect the past and the present. Written by Damian Skinner and featuring four of Lewis's artist talks documenting key preoccupations and series, this monograph surveys a bold, provocative, and ambitious body of work that deserves to be widely known.

"Color in Knitting: By Designers, for Designers" delves into the methods of constructing multicolor knits using knitting structures, techniques, and technologies. The book not only showcases the beauty of multicolor knitwear but also provides a solid foundation for readers to further explore and manipulate these methods for their own design work. The book begins with a color journey of fascinating patterns, designed and implemented by Stoll from both past decades and recent collections, which illustrate the different color effects of multicolor knitting. In the second part of the book, the authors provide insight into the specific structures and techniques used to create these patterns; the section also includes stitch diagrams written using basic knitting symbols to further elucidate the construction of a knit.

Through a series of highly speculative contributions by both leading and highly acclaimed practitioners and theorists, this book gives a new comprehensive overview of architectures¿ most recent practical and theoretical developments. While a few chapters are mostly dedicated to a historical analysis of how we got to experience a new technological reality in architecture and beyond, all chapters including the most forward looking, have in common their rigorous understanding of history as a pool of radical experiments, whether one speaks of the history of architecture, or of sociology, technology, and science. Disruptive Technologies: The Convergence of New Paradigms in Architecture is required reading for anybody student, practitioner, and educator who wants to do serious research in architecture and all disciplines dealing with the shaping of our environment, beyond the important but restricted domain of computational architectural design.Additional multimedia content via app: download the SN More Media app for free, scan a link with play button and access to the Additional Contents directly on your smartphone or tablet.

This book provides an interdisciplinary synthesis of the topic of culture in the context of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and a structured overview of a large body of HCI research on (and with) culture. The book presents a short and guided overview of the concept of culture. It offers some background on the origin and development of the term culture. It also outlines some of its key traits and ingredients and summarizes three main perspectives of culture across disciplines. The book argues that culture matters considerably in HCI and discusses a number of reasons for and against its relevance. Arguments against include a lack of a universal or common definition of the term culture and globalization. Arguments in favor touch upon important aspects of HCI, including a diversely growing user base, the need to provide designers with enough support to design across cultures, and the inseparable relationship between culture and technology. The issues explored in this book can be classified into three, non-mutually exclusive, categories: theoretical, practical, and controversial. The book outlines the main conceptual perspectives of culture within HCI, including Geert Hofstede¿s cultural dimensions theory, Edward T. Hall¿s cross-cultural theory of communication, and Richard Nisbett¿s cultural cognitive systems of thought as well as examining the ways in which culture has been operationalized in HCI research and the main functions of culture in this area. It closes with a discussion of some open issues intended to spark debate and future research. The literature this book draws upon covers a wide range of research disciplines, including Anthropology, Sociology, Cultural Studies, Robotics, Disability Studies, Cultural and Cross-Cultural Psychology, Usability, and Design. This book aspires to provide a useful overview of culture for HCI scholars at all levels.
Self-staging, self-exposure, self-erasure - these are the themes that Michaela Moscouw (*1961) worked on uncompromisingly, excessively and memorably over three decades. Until the early 1980s, the Viennese artist painted abstract pictures, then she destroyed her entire oeuvre and filmed herself doing it. She thus changed medium and since then has exclusively used the means of photography. She obsessively pursued concepts and designs of an aestheticised body experience. For her self-stagings as a radical act and expression of personal emotionality, she acted like an actress rehearsing different roles, questioning gender-specific clichés and body images. She worked on the terrain of VALIE EXPORTS, Friederike Pezolds or Renate Bertlmanns.Today, Michaela Moscouw lives in seclusion in Vienna. Her works have been continuously destroyed, yet works by her have survived in public and private collections. The catalogue presents the preserved photographic work, from early large-format self-portraits in black and white to the colour images from the early 2000s.Published on the occasion of the exhibition Michaela Moscouw, Anwesend Abwesend, Francisco Carolinum, Linz from 10.02. - 14.05.2023

This ambitious text is a monograph about human experiences concerning the potentialities, capacities, and features of humankind from the wholeness of the collective mind body spirit. The purpose in reframing human endeavors is for enhanced alignment for livability and sustainability. This book departs from the concept and practice of ¿design and technology¿ and argues that most crises that endanger and destruct our ecological livability and sustainability come from our way of thinking and doing with ¿design and technology¿ based on the necessity for control. It is the control for overcoming the fear of scarcity, starvation, and the unknown. This book is rather an attempt to find alternate way of decision-making thru holistic methods. It appeals to researchers working in design, sustainability, architecture and urban studies.
Since 1997, the Mart Stam Society - the non-profit association supporting the Weißensee Kunsthochschule Berlin - has awarded the Mart Stam Prize every year. The winners are chosen by an independent jury for the best final projects at the academy of art. Thus, the society provides assistance to young artists and designers during their studies and helps them start their professional careers. The publication features texts and images presenting all the 2022 award winners in detail. Their works reflect the issues that are currently moving the generation of 20- to 30-year-olds. By investigating the pressing problems of our time and current discourses, they develop the themes of their art. Their own mental state is examined and artistically processed. Dreams and fears, body shame, experiences of exclusion due to mental illness are addressed; but there are also works that openly criticize everyday racism or urban development which ignores the needs of the city's inhabitants. With works by: Milan Bergheim, Kaja Busch, Ju Hyun Hwang, Nina Pläs¿kovä, Sabine Richter, Alexandra Ruppert, Vaia Tatopoulou, Lor Willkomm, and Jakob Wirth.

"Brands aren't just intruding on culture, they are our culture. They are the sponsored mechanisms for constructing and manipulating meaning and human identity. But should we cede such a fundamental human need to the market? If not, why not, and is there an alternative? What is Post Branding? is a work of 'practical theory'. It is a compact 'pocket-book' format publication composed of four main sections. The first, 'DIS-BRANDED', is a text of 20 short page-long chapters exposing the ideological underbelly and real-world impact of branding. The second, 'MIXED MESSAGES', is a provocative visual essay illuminating the texts' main themes. The third, 'MANUAL', presents a framework for a critical alternative to corporate branding, humorously appropriating found instructional diagrams as a brand manual satire. This section also includes examples of completed contemporary projects that have implemented post-branding principles. The book concludes with 'CONTEXT', featuring a conversation with cultural theorist Brian Holmes and an argument with design historian Steven Heller. Part design experiment, part critical theory, and part how-to-manual, What is Post-Branding? introduces a creative counter to branding's neoliberal orthodoxy."--Vendor website.

William Klein's 1966 cult classic send-up of Paris haute couture - Vanity FairBased on the original images and dialogue of William Klein's 1966 film Who Are You, Polly Maggoo?, this fantastic photo-novel tells the adventures of Polly Maggoo, a star model played by Dorothy McGowan (model for Vogue in the 1960s). The plot unfolds across the fashion world of Polly Maggoo; the world of television (based around the character of director Jean Rochefort); and a magical kingdom of operetta whose crown prince (played by Sami Frey) is in love with the young model. Also featuring in this star-studded cast are Alice Sapritch, Delphine Seyrig, Philippe Noiret, Roland Topor and Jacques Seiler. The publication ingeniously translates into book form the zany universe of the film. Klein's masterful framing gives exquisite rhythm to its page composition and flow as we follow the crazy adventures of the extraordinary heroine in a madcap race through the streets and rooftops of Paris, all the way up to a distant palace lost in the snow. Born in New York, William Klein (1926-2022) was a multidisciplinary artist whose practice revolutionized photography, particularly fashion and street photography. His fashion work was the subject of several iconic photobooks, including Life Is Good and Good for You in New York (1957) and Tokyo (1964). In the 1980s, he turned to film projects. His works are held in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, and the Art Institute of Chicago, among others.

The Austrian typographer Helmut Schmid was a master of his craft. He put his own spin on Emil Ruder's teachings at the Basel School of Design while remaining faithful to the principles of clarity, simplicity and elegance. Blending eastern and western influences, Schmid honed his skills and put them into practice in the fields of editorial design, packaging of ethical drugs and visual identity of brands such as Pocari Sweat sports drink (Otsuka Pharmaceutical), Maquillage (Shiseido) and IPSA. He also produced independent publications in parallel, such as Typographic Reflections.Helmut Schmid Typography explores the typographer's oeuvre in its entirety. The book's generous design allows each image to breathe, and the accompanying texts narrate Schmid's life and career in an informative and pleasant manner. Complementing the publications Weingart: Typography and Ruder Typography, Ruder Philosophy, this bilingual monograph completes the Basel school of typographic thought.
