They survived the Great Depression, helped win two world wars, livedthrough the birth of the space age, and witnessed the introduction ofthe internet. The real- life characters eulogized in this book were special notbecause they held prodigious political power or amassed large amounts ofwealth but precisely because they were ordinary. They walked among us largelyunknown but helped shaped and define the American character through the20th Century. Most were part of what has been called "the greatest generation"because America reached its greatest zenith during their tenure. Their eulogies, first delivered at their funerals, offer snippets from their lives which reveal theircharacter, contributions, personalities, and spiritual strength. These bits andpieces of their lives are recorded herein that these ordinary but exceptionalpeople will not be forgotten and that those who walk in their footprints orstand on their shoulders will be better able to maintain communion with them. Also contained herein are the Meditations of comfort and hope which the livesof those profiled cause us to remember.
The ALBERTINA modern exhibition presents Alfred Kubin's view of the world of evil, the predominant theme of his life and work. The aesthetics of evil prove to be the antithesis of a tranquil idyll for him, one of the most outstanding drawing artists of the twentieth century. Trapped in his fantasies, he finds himself confronted with uncanny dream apparitions and a pronounced fear of the feminine, the night, and fate. This catalogue explores Kubin's graphic cosmos of the ominous, his nightmares and obsessions and the iconography of evil. ALFRED KUBIN (1877-1959) was an important Austrian draughtsman and graphic artist. In 1898, after a traumatic childhood in Zell am See and a series of mental crises, he began his artistic training in Munich. Kubin worked through his nightmares and obsessions in a large number of fantastic drawings.
George Slatyer Barrett, D.D. (1839-1916) was for 45 years (1866-1911) the minister of Prince's Street Congregational (now United Reformed) Church in Norwich, which under his tutelage was considered "one of the most influential Congregational churches in England." He was educated at University College, London; trained for the ministry at Lancashire Independent College, Manchester; was invested with the honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity at the University of St. Andrew's; and was the 1894 Chairman of the Congregational Union of England and Wales. As an author, he made several important contributions to theological literature, including his best-known work as editor of The Congregational Church Hymnal (1887).With The Temptation of Christ, Barrett (ever the Nonconformist) challenges traditional thinking concerning Jesus' time in the wilderness by focusing his attention on its perceived psychological problems, positing "if instead of such a mechanical and literal interpretation of the narrative, we suppose that our Lord was tempted by doubts as to His own Divine plan?" An analysis that has been lauded as "wisely and reverently and spiritually interpreted, with ever fresh pertinence and power."
[a.d. 277.] The Manichæan heresy, which was destined to operate so terribly against the Church and the purity of the Gospel, encountered its earliest successful antagonism in the Thebaid; and I have not doubted the wisdom of prefixing this Disputation to the veritable name and work of Alexander of Lycopolis, as important to the complete history of the great Alexandrian school. The Edinburgh translator of this work regards it as an "authentic relic of antiquity," in spite of Beausobre, who treats it as a romance. I have forced myself, in this republication, to reject no theory of the Edinburgh collaborators to which I have not been able to give as much critical attention, at least, as they have evidently bestowed upon their work. It seems to me a well-sustained presumption that the work is fundamentally real, and Dr. Neander admits its base of fact.
[a.d. 273-313-326.] The records of the Ante-Nicene period, so far as Alexandria is concerned, are complete in this great primate, the friend and patron of Athanasius, and, with him, the master-spirit of the great Council of Nicæa. I have so arranged the "Fragments" of the Edinburgh series in this volume as to make them a great and important integer in rounding out and fulfilling the portraiture of the school and the See of Alexandria. The student will thus have at hand the materials for a covetable survey of the Alexandrian Fathers,-their history, their influence, and their immense authority in early Christendom. In an elucidation I venture to condense my thoughts upon some points which it has been the interest of unbelievers to misrepresent, and to color for their own purposes. But, as the limitations of my editorial duty do not allow me to enter upon a dissertation, I am thankful to refer the reader to the truly valuable though by no means exhaustive work of Dr. Neale on The Patriarchate of Alexandria. His statements are not, indeed, to be received with unreserving confidence; for, in spite of his pure and lofty purposes, his mind had been formed under the strong bias of a transient fashion in divinity, and he always surveyed his subject from an Occidental if not from a Latin (I do not mean a strictly Roman) point of view. To other popular historians I need not refer the student, save, by anticipation, to the list of authorities which will be furnished in the concluding volume of this series.Let us reflect, then, upon the epoch to which we have now come. The intense sufferings, labors, and intellectual as well as moral struggles, of the three heroic centuries, are closing, and Alexander of Alexandria is the grand figure of the period. Diocletian is preparing to let loose upon the sheep of Christ the ferocious wolves of the tenth persecution. Lucian is founding the school of Antioch, revising the New Testament, and, in fact, the whole Bible of the Fathers, for his labors included the version of the Seventy. Unhappily, the ambitious Arius, who calls him master, has begun to trouble the evangelical See of St. Mark; and Achillas, notwithstanding the warnings of Peter, has laid hands upon him, and made him a presbyter. He aspires to be made a bishop.

Making Sense of It All invites us to experience a good God who actively woos us to himself, even (or especially) through our heartaches and setbacks. With a pastor's heart and fifty years of pastoral ministry, Richard Hipps weaves together biblical truths, storytelling, and the wisdom of fellow strugglers to draw us closer to God's heart. His reflections will have you affirming with him that God is trustworthy--that a good God is telling a good story that will have a good ending.
Reclaiming Men's Spirituality is a study that investigates men's spirituality by exploring three research questions: Can a form of spirituality about men be identified and described, how can this spirituality be examined, and what is it that needs to be reclaimed? To answer these questions and at the same time remain committed to the importance of lived experience, this study opted to investigate the lives of men by attending to ten spiritual histories. The study is situated in Malta, and the ten spiritual histories provide access to various features, expressions, and contours that relate closely to men's being. Semi-structured interviews were also conducted with ten spiritual directors who have men as spiritual directees. Their contribution clarifies the structure of men's spirituality, the effort required when directing male spiritual directees and the impact generated in the lives of men thanks to spiritual direction. To provide a frame of reference for the examination of all the gathered data, John of the Cross's spiritual framework has been chosen as the mystical instrument against which men's spiritualities are studied, leading to richer insights into the operations, motives, goals, and problems of such spiritualities.

It is not easy living in today's world, let alone as a believer of Jesus Christ. Whether you are a seasoned Christian, new Christian, young Christian, or one step away for declaring Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, this book is for you. You will laugh, you will cry, you will assess, but most of all, you will know that you are *His, and He is yours. This book will give you real everyday "parables" to give you a deeper revelation of scripture and what that looks like in your day-to-day life. You will put this book down, knowing that you are a child of the living King, and you are to represent Him in all aspects of your life. As a Christian millennial, I know what it is like to live a set-apart lifestyle in trying and tempting environments. Whether you are a millennial or not, my stories of my upbringing and principles that I have learned along the way will assist in making the Bible real in your everyday life. The asterisk indicates that something was spelled wrong, and correction was made. Therefore, having the asterisk before "his" indicates that the correct way to refer to God the Father is with an uppercase letter. This concept came about by coming to the realization that God, at times, is not first in our lives and that we need to give Him His throne back in our lives. You will know that you are His and He is yours.
