Om danske jernbaners rutebiler er der efterhånden skrevet en del. Men banernes øvrige landevejskøretøjer har ikke været genstand for nogen særlig opmærksomhed.De danske jernbaner begyndte i 1920'erne for alvor at blive truet af konkurrencen fra bilerne. Mange jernbaner tog konkurrencen op ved selv at gå ind i bildrift. Enten ved selv at drive fragtruter eller ved at etablere udkørsel af gods fra stationerne. I nogle tilfælde anskaffede banerne selv biler til opgaverne, mens de i andre tilfælde indgik aftaler med vognmænd om opgaven. DSB begyndte for alvor at transportere gods med lastbil i slutningen af 1940'erne.Helt naturligt fulgte banernes bilpark med udviklingen i takt med, at der kom nye biler på markedet.Senere kom andre typer af biler til, f.eks. biler til vedligeholdelse af jernbanernes anlæg, bygninger mv.Bogen er ud over det jernbanehistoriske element, også en beskrivelse af udviklingen af de mindre lastbiler i Danmark. Hovedvægten er lagt på at vise billeder, men lidt tekst har også sneget sig ind. Biltyperne er "ganske almindelige biler", som vi husker dem fra gadebilledet.Baneejede lastbiler til godstransport forsvandt op mod årtusindeskiftet. Først ophørte privatbanernes kørsel med lastbiler i 1990’erne, og i år 2000 ophørte DSB med transport af stykgods.
