This compact 50 design coloring book is sure to please any nautical fan! With designs that are both complex and simple - at 8.5'' x 8.5'' - it can be taken just about anywhere with you! Unlike my other coloring books - this one does feature designs on both the front and backs of pages - allowing for more designs in a more compact book. I wanted to offer something that was a little simpler with something a little more light-hearted in mind. Something not so art-heavy as the end-game, if that makes sense. Some colored pencils or crayons and you are out to sea with this adorable little nautical book!
Armor of the Iowa-Class Battleships is the second book in this series on these warships. Devoting a single, large volume to this subject has resulted in the most detailed book on a warship ever published. The book uses over 600 original plans, new scale drawing, renderings, and photographs to document the armor protection of the Iowa-class battleships. There are measured drawings showing the dimensions of each armor plate on the ship. The book explains how the armor was assembled and illustrates the supporting structures for the armor. Differences among the various ships are shown. Because this book relies on original plans and ship measurements, it corrects many errors about the Iowa-class that circulate in print.
Ferry Beach is a captivating recollection of the men and boats that have sailed the waters around Barrow-in-Furness for generations. Through personal anecdotes and historical research, author Stan Henderson paints a vivid portrait of the boatmen who braved the waves, wind, and tides to make their living on the sea.Ferry Beach explores the many types of craft that have graced the waters off Barrow and is a tribute to the people who crewed them - the hardworking, skilled, and often colourful characters who kept the maritime traditions of the region alive.Through interviews with local families and archival research, Ferry Beach brings to life the stories of these men and their boats. It offers a glimpse into a world that has largely disappeared. It is a must-read for anyone with an interest in maritime history, regional culture, or the human experience on the sea.

In the tradition of his acclaimed warship design histories, Norman Friedman describes the forces--technical, political, and operationa--that shaped a vital element of U.S. sea power. For example, he examines the evolution in missions, such as forward-based antisubmarine warfare and strategic deterrence, that transformed the submarine from its former subsidiary role to the center of national power. U.S. Submarines Since 1945 is also the story of a technological revolution: first the emergence of fast diesel-electric craft, then the shock of nuclear power, followed by the appearance of submarine-launched ballistic missiles. Nowhere else can a reader find so complete or sophisticated an account of the development of the U.S. submarine force, including not only the hulls, but also the weapons and sensors they carry. The book details what submarines were ordered, what weapons and propulsion systems they had, how they performed, and what sonars and combat systems were developed. This illustrated design history contains more than 100 photographs and more than 100 line drawings, including specially commissioned artwork from technical illustrator James L. Christley. These exclusive illustrations, along with the incisive text, capture the excitement of a revolutionary period in submarine development. Enthusiasts and professionals alike will welcome the abundance of information offered. In this revised edition, Norman Friedman explores what has happened since the Cold War, which means both new classes and new technology (some of it applied to existing submarines). New material includes weapons and sensors as they have developed since 1995. This new technology is explained in the context of very different post-Cold-War priorities. In addition, Friedman includes new information that has become available on submarines described in the earlier edition.
"The golden age of sailing and boating comes alive in this selection of photographs curated from the unparalleled archive of this great American sport. The Rosenfelds' photographs of competition sailboats, billowing spinnakers, and graceful motor yachts not only document the most glamorous era of sailing and boating but also celebrate and capture the power, drama, and beauty of the maritime experience. These beautifully reproduced prints will transport the reader to the decks of daysailers, sleek America's Cup racing boats, vintage Chris-Craft runabouts, and elegant motor yachts from a bygone era. Morris Rosenfeld and his sons defined maritime photography in the first half of the twentieth century--the dynamic balance of sky and water, the perspective that emphasizes the boat, and the moment that captures its nature. Each timeless image comes to life both through its story and in beautiful reproduction on the oversized pages. This is a celebration of the traditions of the nautical lifestyle and a siren song to the American pursuit of going to sea"--Provided by publisher.
Phil Carroll takes us on his global odyssey of voyages as a deck cadet in the early-1980s. It was the cusp of change in the merchant navy as containerisation began to dominate world shipping. Heady weeks 'on the coast' in traditional cargo ships in old ports, giving way to fleeting visits by 'box boats' to swanky new concrete container wharves, miles from town. He vividly describes his worldwide adventures at sea and in port in a male-dominated environment of British officers and Chinese, Barbadian, and UK crews. Interwoven in his narrative are nuggets of maritime history and simple technical descriptions, bringing a bygone seafaring era to life. Sea experience consolidated his studies in college to earn his Second Mate's ticket, the climax of his cadetship.
"During the first half of the twentieth century, economic recession, a lack of government support, and the incursion of large draggers on coastal fishing grounds meant many inshore fishing communities were facing poverty and starvation. The formation of fishers' cooperatives started a movement toward recovery, and the introduction of the internal combustion engine along with the development of a new medium-sized fishing vessel equipped with mechanical haulers meant groundfishers who had previously employed handlines from small boats with a single hook could now haul multiple trawl lines from a single vessel. The development of the "government approved" Cape Island-type longliner was perhaps one the most significant achievements in the survival of Nova Scotia's struggling inshore fishery. Sadly, this important history has gone largely unrecorded. With the help of in-depth archival research and more than thirty little-known historical photographs, Building a Better Boat chronicles the history of the recovery of the shore fishery and the development of a new fishing craft known as wooden Cape Island-type longliners. It is a story that needs to be told, if for no other reason than to honour the brave fishing families who persevered through poverty and hunger and who, despite all odds, developed a vessel that would help them secure their own futures and that of future generations."--
