There is an audition for a play where the seats are packed, though when the cast hopefuls are introduced to the crowd in this story, they're only concern is to make it back on stage, as they too, one by one will join the crowd in a dressed up fashion created by a director who brings the cast to a frozen in time like standstill, he calls his place 'forever morning theatre.' Love, determination, chimera, optimism; 19 poems peppered throughout this just enough Easter eggs encounter.

Urban Mobilities in Literature and Art Activism explores the entwinement of mobility and immobility in urban spaces by focusing on their representation in literary narratives but also in visual and performing arts. Across a range of geographical contexts, this volume builds on the new mobilities paradigm developed by literary scholars, sociologists and human geographers. The different chapters employ a cohesive framework that is sensitive to the intersecting dimensions of power and discrimination that shape urban kinetic features. The contributions are divided into three sections, each of which places the focus on a different aspect of urban mobility: Itinerant Subjects, Modes of Transport and Places of Transit, and Urban Liminalities.Chapter 7, "Alienation, Abjection and the Mobile Postcolonial City: Public Transport in Ousmane Sembène¿s ¿Niiwam¿ and Yvonne Veräs Without a Name" is available open access under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License via link.springer.com.
This edited collection is the first book-length critical study of the Showtime-Sky Atlantic television series Penny Dreadful (2014-2016), which also includes an analysis of Showtime¿s 2020 spin-off City of Angels. Chapters examine the status of the series as a work of twenty-first-century cable television, contemporary Gothic-horror, and intermedial adaptation, spanning sources as diverse as eighteenth and nineteenth-century British fiction and poetry, American dime novels, theatrical performance, Hollywood movies, and fan practices. Featuring iconic monsters such as Dr. Frankenstein and his Creature, the ¿bride¿ of Frankenstein, Dracula, the werewolf, Dorian Gray, and Dr. Jekyll, Penny Dreadful is a mash-up of familiar texts and new Gothic figures such as spiritualist Vanessa Ives, played by the magnetic Eva Green. As a recent example of adapting multiple sources in different media, Penny Dreadful has as much to say about the Romantic and Victorian eras as it does about our present-day fascination with screen monsters. This book is a comprehensive anthology comprising essays on women film directors, producers and screenwriters from Bollywood, or the popular Hindi film industry. It derives from the major theories of modernity, postmodern feminism, semiotics, cultural production, and gender performativity in globalized times. The collection transcends the traditional approaches of looking at films made by women filmmakers as ¿feminist¿ cinema, and focuses on an extraordinary group of women filmmakers like Ashwini Iyer Tiwari, Bhavani Iyer, Farah Khan, Mira Nair Vijaya Mehta, and Zoya Akthar. The volume will be of interest to academics and theorists of gender and Hindi cinema, as well as anybody interested in contemporary Hindi films in their various manifestations.
This book focuses on the characters that populate the Game of Thrones universe and on one of the most salient features of their interaction: violence and warfare. It analyses these questions from a multidisciplinary perspective that is chiefly based on Classical Studies. The book is divided into two sections. The first section explores Martin¿s characters as the mainstay of both the novels and the TV series, since the author has peopled his universe with three-dimensional intriguing characters that resonate with the reader/audience. The second section is devoted to violence and warfare, both pervasive in the Game of Thrones universe. In particular, the TV series¿ depiction of violence is explicit, going beyond the limits that have seldom been traversed in primetime television i.e. the execution of Ned Stark, the ¿Red Wedding¿ and ¿Battle of the Bastards¿. In the Game of Thrones universe, violence is not only restricted to warfare but is an everyday occurrence, a result of the social and gender inequalities characterising the world created by Martin.

This perceptive, entertaining book celebrates a century of genre films, everything from comedies and musicals to war pictures, sports sagas, horror movies, science fiction, and film noir. Richly illustrated, it moves with ease from analysis of theme and style to consideration of historical context, social significance, and production background. Film historian James Stratton writes in a vivid, conversational style that will appeal to students, film buffs, and general readers. One of the book's special features is that it brings fresh insight to such familiar titles as Swing Time, Gilda, Air Force One, and Batman Begins while introducing readers to lesser-known, equally rewarding treasures like Five Came Back, The Hitch-Hiker, Prime Cut, Eight Below, and Let Me In. Panoramic in scope, this highly informative account weighs the contributions of stars, directors, writers, cinematographers, and all the various other studio artists and technicians who have shaped the film genres still popular today. James Stratton has written several books about films and filmmakers and lives in southern California.

A SUPERB NEW AMERICAN VERSION.Of the many translations of Chekhov's THREE SISTERS for the English-speaking world, this one is very likely the Funniest. The footnotes alone are a useful and humorous compendium of notes and anecdotes.A DEFINITIVE NEW VERSION OF CHEKHOV'S VAUDEVILLE."Chekhov wrote Three Sisters in Yalta, and then rewrote it in early autumn in Moscow. He spent two to three days on each act, but there were significant breaks between the acts. With complete sincerity he said that he had written a VAUDEVILLE, and was taken aback at our amusement of this definition of Three Sisters..." - these words were written in 1917 by Nemirovich-Danchenko, co-founder of the Moscow Art Theatre (MAT) along with Stanislavski. "Given the ensemble playing, the friendliness of the performance, and maturity of form, Three Sisters was always seen in the theatre as the best of the Chekhov productions."
Viola didn't survive the shipwreck. This is what happens to Shakespeare's original text of TWELFTH NIGHT when its heroine, its 'beating heart,' is marauding through it as a ZOMBIE.WARNING: Let all who read this know that Shakespeare's Twelfth Night is a masterful comedy from the greatest English playwright of all time, perhaps Shakespeare's finest comedy, which Twelfth Night of the Living Dead does not intend to modernize or (belches) improve. However,When it strikes you that the original text can and does survive as one-by-one its characters are turning into zombies... And when it becomes clear that the sheer self-involvement of some characters transcends all need for earthly dialogue... And when one of the characters has been famously threatening revenge for more than 400 years... ...it seems like a worthwhile endeavor to massacre (not just cut) Shakespeare's text in order to see the silly creature-feature 'show within the show.'
Mae West is one of the true icons of show business, enjoying success on stage and in movies. She created her character, wrote her own dialog, and understood self-promotion. An innately talented entertainer, Mae began working on stage as a small child and was still pursuing creative endeavors in the last year of her life. This book concentrates on her movie work, and although she only made 12 movies, they are what we have to represent her work. Her best movies were edgy and challenging along with being entertaining, and have lived on as classics.

Much has been written about the aesthetics of the television series Hannibal and its devoted fans, and some have discussed its philosophical ideas and its Gothic characteristics, but until now there has been no in-depth reading of the show as a fairy tale. However, the show positions itself as a fairy tale in its third season. Recognizing it as a fairy tale provides an understanding of its appeal and forces us to consider its lessons. Like a fairy tale, Hannibal plays with time and reality and teaches its audience about their world and how to survive in it. From the show, the audience learns both the importance and the danger of family and friends, the complicated nature of humanity containing the capability for good and evil, and the arbitrariness of society's definitions and taboos. As a fairy tale, it draws its viewers in and encourages them not only to come back time and again but to retell and even add to the story.
The Homer Simpson-esque stereotype has been a persistent trope in cartoons since programming aimed directly at children and adolescents began. Young viewers are exposed to the incapable and incompetent ""hapless father"" archetype on a regular basis, causing both boys and girls to expect the bare minimum of fathers while mothers hold the responsibility for all domestic and parenting work. Cartoons rely heavily on toxic stereotypes for ratings, when in fact, healthy representations of fathers are just as successful in maintaining viewership. Eleven essays, written by scholars from around the world, investigate the topic of fatherhood as it is represented in children's animated television shows. Main themes that emerge include absent and negligent fathers, single fathers, generational shifts within families, and raising the standard of fathering by creating secure bonds between father and child. The authors uncover problematic fathers, imperfect yet redemptive fathers, and fathers who embody idealized parenting traits through some of our most beloved animated dads. This collection demonstrates the impact that media representations of father figures have on young viewers and argues for better role models.

Hollywood Diary is definitely a keeper!Movie MemoriesYet another great read has come my way with the newly published Hollywood Diary, Twelve Untold Tales by Richard Lamparski (best known for his excellent series of books entitled Whatever Became of…?). Once I started this fascinating 175 page tome, I just couldn't put it down, with its untold tales of the likes of Patsy Kelly, Gary Cooper, Robert Taylor, Mae West, Rock Hudson, Zeppo Marx, Pola Negri, Martin Kosleck, Darla Hood (of Our Gang), Richard Cromwell and a most touching story of the casting of Ma Joad in The Grapes of Wrath - a choice between Jane Darwell and Beulah Bondi, two of Hollywood's best character actresses ever. There are several "eyebrow lifting" moments here and there, but overall it is always highly entertaining, and illustrated throughout. I highly recommend this book, and can't wait to read Mr. Lamparski's companion volume, entitled Manhattan Diary which promises to be another frank and explosive read.

This book investigates the role that cinemas in Brazil, Chile and Argentina have played in reconstructing memories of the most recent military dictatorships. These countries have undergone a distinctive post-dictatorship experience marked by unprecedented debates about human rights violations, the silencing of victims and accountability for state crimes. Meanwhile, politically committed filmmakers have created an extensive body of work addressing the dictatorship and its aftermath. This book employs a transnational and comparative approach to examine the strategies that these filmmakers have used to render visible what has remained hidden, to make reappear what has disappeared, and to reinterpret historical actors and events from a contemporary perspective. Through attention to the specific properties of the medium and the socio-historical context in which films have been made, it describes the different cinematic modes of remembering that emerged in response to wider memory frameworks in South America.
