Three traumatic events in a matter of weeks jolted Aileen Gronewold from career professional to amateur caregiver. For the next six years and countless episodes of The Lawrence Welk Show, she learned the art of caregiving in times both tender and difficult. As her mother's dementia deepened, she began navigating the Long Goodbye while struggling to balance her marriage, sibling conflicts, and her own loss of identity. Walking Mama Home reveals both the joys and sacrifices of caring for a parent at the end of life. This moving narrative celebrates the strength of family and unconditional love, even as it offers abundant grace for mistakes along the way. Aileen writes with candor and compassion to encourage those navigating their own caregiving journey.

  • af Reginald D. Jarrell
    237,95 kr.

Reggie Jarrell was adopted as a newborn by a childless couple who were part of his extended family. They agreed to let his teenaged birth mother be part of his life. But no one would speak of his birth father. Jarrell grew up in a loving home with parents who encouraged and supported him. His birth mother came in and out of his life. Despite knowing he was cherished, in his teens he longed to know who his birth father was. That longing resulted in decades of starting and stopping a search for the mysterious man whose genes he carried. It culminated when, in his fifties, Jarrell met Myron. What he uncovered about the secret man who had haunted him was shocking. As he learned more, his view of his birth mother was also altered. Jarrell tells this story with candor. He lets readers know of his ambivalence that stopped him from responding once he located his birth father. He shows readers the charismatic Myron, a teenager who got in trouble and the radiant Wanda who gave him life when she was fouirteen. Readers meet his adoptive parents who taught their beloved son to value books, hard work, and learning. Jarrell's story traces his own restlessness through an assortment of careers and the accumulation of multiple advanced degrees. We see him puzzling over what traits he may have inherited from Myron and why his family kept Myron a secret from him for so long was. This is a moving story of loss and recovery, of love in its various forms. It is an important read for people whose lives intersect it from any of the viewpoints: birth parents, adoptive parents, adoptees, those considering adoption, social workers, church groups. It is appropriate for families with middle school or older children to read together and for use in schools. Now, when most children experience multiple parent figures and many are estranged from family members, Jarrell's story shows that one can love and be enriched by multiple parent figures. And that love comes in various forms and can survive despite everything. Photos of his family enhance the text.

This edited volume investigates the effects of shifting configurations and conceptualizations of the experience and meaning of home as it is embodied in early childhood care and education (ECCE). As the globalized early learning agenda drives more children to attend ECCE institutions, these institutions increasingly employ the concept of home through their curriculum and daily operations by attempting to foster a homelike environment or by incorporating items from children's homes into play. Chapters seek to recognize the complexity of a concept that is often taken for granted by exploring ways of being and thinking that share an interest in the notion of home. Authors offer multiple lenses and approaches to make sense of home as a conceptual space that operates in complex and often interrelated ways, including as an intellectual space, a built environment, a disciplinary technology, and a threshold.

This Compendium was conceived as a ¿pocket compass¿, a practical guide that may help readers to orientate themselves while they explore global affairs and attempt to make sense of the highly interconnected, multidimensional challenges of contemporary human development. The book is intended to be an accessible, concise, yet comprehensive reference for anyone who hopes to better understand today¿s world and its dramatic complexity. The aim is to highlight a relevant selection of the demographic, socio-economic, geo-political, and environmental macro-dynamics that define our time, and to explore in a practical way the indicators that can be used to monitor their evolution over time.  In general, this project stems from the need to apply ¿systemic thinking¿ to the study of the world and to develop a holistic perspective that can bridge the gap that for too long has existed across academic disciplines and their respective focuses. The macro-trends featured in the book shed light, in particular, on the change that has been occurring over time in the vast Global South ¿ a portion of the globe that accounts for over 80% of the world¿s total population. The book¿s ultimate ¿ although not exclusive ¿ target audience is undoubtedly composed of undergraduate students of subjects such as political science, international affairs, international development, human geography and the like. In addition, the Compendium may benefit professionals in both public and private organisations as well as members of the general public seeking to acquire "global development literacy" in manners that are academically sound, but also accessible and concise.

  • af Christian Aspalter

This book presents a new step farther into the twenty-first century, for the first time truly combining a comprehensive global data analysis with social policy theory development. The theory of global ideal-typical welfare regimes, also known as the ¿Ten Worlds of Welfare Regime Theory¿, as set forth earlier by Christian Aspalter, is now in this book tested empirically using a quantitative global data analysis for the first time. The strong and rich results fully vindicated the Ten Worlds Theory. All in all, about 150 countries are included in this test, measuring numerous variables on two main dimensions, i.e., povertization and inequality. The innovative approach of using a new indicator, Aspalter¿s Standardized Relative Performance Index, is applied, which facilitated the exact measurements of distances between relative performances of each variable, each dimension, each country, and each ideal-typical welfare regime (in relation to one another, respectively). In addition, one explanative and one normative meta-study is added to the book, to point to ways to understand and deal with the global culprit of inequality and, hence, poverty.¿On the backdrop of decades of comparative theoretical and empirical research we now, for the first time, have a truly global analysis of welfare regimes.¿ ---- Peter Abrahamson, Department of Sociology, University of Copenhagen

"A leading authority on sheriffs in America investigates the impunity with which sheriffs police their communities, alongside the troubling role they play in American life, law enforcement, and, increasingly, national politics. What should be of grave concern to us all is that sheriffs are wholly unaccountable. They do not report to federal, state, or local executives, and sheriffs' duties are often enshrined in state constitutions, making them effectively "above the law." Sheriffs have become a flashpoint in the current politics of toxic masculinity, guns, white supremacy, and rural resentment. They played a role in the January 6 insurrection-their anti-federal government stance coming into perfect alignment with both far-right militia groups and former President Donald Trump. This rise of the sheriff in national politics and their increasing right-wing radicalization has been assisted by the revival of the so-called Constitutional Sheriff movement, which casts sheriffs as the "last line of defense" between citizens and a libertarian definition of freedom in this country. Such sheriffs have been embraced by white nationalists, the far right, and most factions of the GOP, who seek to attain and maintain power at all costs. More than 95 percent of America's three thousand sheriffs are white men. They employ 25 percent of sworn law enforcement officers. They are the only elected law enforcement, but nearly 60 percent of all sheriffs run unopposed, and because they have no term limits, many serve for decades. They patrol the streets, make traffic stops, execute arrest warrants, and investigate crimes. They run county jails that admit 4.9 million people every year, which puts them in contact with some of the most vulnerable and disenfranchised people in the community. Journalist Jessica Pishko deploys a real gumshoe reporting style and prefers to be in the room to get her story. She's spent hours with the sheriffs she reports on. She's attended far-right rallies where prominent sheriffs blast their rallying cries in order to get a sense of the audiences they're reaching. She has signed up for Constitutional Sheriff training programs to immerse herself in the rhetoric. The result is a ground-shaking revelation about how this militant and unchecked law enforcement contingent sees itself and sees the rest of us"--

Historically and to the present day, social work has been closely intertwined with social movements, both as allies and in opposition to them. This engagement finds its expression in conventions (human rights), cooperation (world conferences) and coalitions (NGOs).This textbook offers an insight into the connections between social movements and social work from an international perspective, teaching their historical and theoretical foundations and illustrating them in a practical way with case studies from around the world. It aims to bring the perspectives of a 'global social work profession and discipline', and thus the international and political dimensions of social work, back to the forefront of the discipline.

This book explores the connection between family structure and circumstances, parental engagement, and adolescent sexual behavior. Given that South Africa contains the highest portion of the global HIV epidemic within a single country, a comprehensive, book-length investigation intösometimes risky¿adolescent sexual behaviour is necessary. Drawing from the longitudinal Cape Area Panel Study (CAPS) of more than 4,000 adolescents between the ages of fourteen and twenty-two, as well as qualitative interviews and focus group discussions with parents and adolescents, this study pioneers empirical investigation of adolescent sexual behavior within the intricate framework of family dynamics in South Africa.

Life is full of challenges that affect our emotions. One could say that through life we are constantly riding a roller coaster of emotional ups and downs.I don't know of anyone who has not experienced at least one situation during their life that has dramatically challenged the way they handle things.Things are going well according to our perception of this earthly life until suddenly we are like a pet budgerigar that has fallen off his perch and landed smack bang to the bottom of the cage! So, what do we do now? This book looks at some of the emotion's carers will experience along with including some of the author's emotional challenges that had to be faced as she journeyed with her husband throughout his Young Onset Alzheimer's Disease. Well-illustrated, it shows how the mind and the brain work together to create emotional response memories and how stored past emotional response memory can influence your responses to the current challenge of caring. Sharing her own reaction to suddenly having to ride a new emotional roller coaster is reassuring for the reader. There are some quotes from famous people that will uplift and encourage A book that is based around personal experience. Primarily for carers, this book can help others understand some basic neuroscience and how emotional response memory is laid down in the brain tissue. How to best negotiate the emotional roller coaster life suddenly forces you to ride.

The Social, Political and Economic Environment for Social Work Practice is designed to encourage practitioners to view behavior through a macro practice lens. Specifically, the text explores the influence that the economic and political systems have on social interactions and outcomes. Building upon the person in environment perspective, each chapter begins with a case example of a practitioner helping clients navigate complex social situations. These case studies help social workers consider the larger environmental forces at play in client care. Each chapter concludes with a Considerations for Practice section to tie the case and content together for application. Content builds upon three separate yet interconnected facets of the environment. Theories of the social environment are explored along with the concepts of power and social change. Next, an understanding of the political environment highlights how we make collective decisions as communities and societies via policy practice. Lastly, an overview of the economic environment explores how people meet basic needs in society and what the government's role is in addressing poverty and inequality. Designed to demystify economic and policy concepts, The Social, Economic, and Political Environment for Social Work Practice is an ideal text for coursework emphasizing human behavior from a mezzo and macro perspective.

The present research deals with the policies directed at young adults on social assistance without vocational training (YAS). Drawing on data collected within cantonal administrations and providers of integration (Basel-City and Geneva) as well as interviews with YAS, the publication analysis cantonal social policies and their moral underpinnings. In Switzerland, there is an ongoing strategical shift in the field of youth policies that emphasizes educational integra- tion as a first and primary integration step. This policy shift has implications for the strategical scope of the cantons. The focus on "education first" as a guideline dictates an approach, which follows an intertwined neo-liberal and paternalistic discourse: On the one hand, social policies are designed as investment to avoid a long-term labour market exclusion of the YAS. On the other hand, these policies are legitimized via narratives that construct the YAS as irresponsible and dependent - not yet ready to enter adulthood. In doing so, social policies create and reproduce structural vulnerabilities related to dominant moral values like reinforcing the work ethics of young welfare beneficiaries.

This book chronicles the school envisioned by Eleanor Roosevelt in 1933 to serve Arthurdale, the New Deal government-created community in north-central West Virginia. Arthurdale was founded to house unemployed miners and their families and provide them with opportunities to receive healthcare and obtain gainful employment. Roosevelt had a particular interest in the education of children, feeling that education and social life were profoundly intertwined within a community. With that in mind, in 1934, she hired Elsie Ripley Clapp¿an educator and leader in the Progressive Education movement¿to design and implement the school, as well as oversee the social life of Arthurdale as a whole. In addition to covering the Arthurdale School's birth, life, and dissolution, Rosenberg discusses how the lessons of the school might serve the culture of education today, especially as an element of a comprehensive approach to community revitalization.

This publication emerged from a lecture series of a university cooperation between India and Germany and presents the work of nine authors on social work education and practice in their respective countries. The authors are highly experienced and practice oriented and their contributions range from clinical social work, indigenous knowledge systems, community-based social work, and institutional models of community engagements to decolonized social work education and practices. Contemporary and emerging concepts, theories, pedagogies, opportunities, innovations and challenges have been presented, giving a comprehensive account of the trends and perspectives of social work education in their countries.Internationally, social work faces complex forces of globalisation and liberalisation leading to critical evaluation of the relevance of existing approaches and developing models of intervention applicable to a specific context. An exchange of ideas can lead to considering their implications in diverse settings and contribute to addressing structural inequalities collectively in an ethical, critical and conscious manner. An approach, to which this book contributes by giving insights into different backgrounds, understandings, and methods.

This book explores the ethical problems of algorithmic bias and its potential impact on populations that experience health disparities by examining the historical underpinnings of explicit and implicit bias, the influence of the social determinants of health, and the inclusion of racial and ethnic minorities in data. Over the last twenty-five years, the diagnosis and treatment of disease have advanced at breakneck speeds. Currently, we have technologies that have revolutionized the practice of medicine, such as telemedicine, precision medicine, big data, and AI. These technologies, especially AI, promise to improve the quality of patient care, lower health care costs, improve patient treatment outcomes, and decrease patient mortality. AI may also be a tool that reduces health disparities; however, algorithmic bias may impede its success. This book explores the risks of using AI in the context of health disparities. It is of interest to health services researchers, ethicists, policy analysts, social scientists, health disparities researchers, and AI policy makers.

THE TRUE STORY OF AN INTERNATIONAL CRIME RING AND ITS DOWNFALLIn 1957, as the Cold War raged, Ian Fleming took a respite from writing James Bond to craft a work of nonfiction every bit as tense as a Bond adventure. Aided by an ex-MI5 agent and International Diamond Security Organization operative going by the alias "John Blaize," Fleming chronicled the IDSO's infiltration of the "million-carat network"―the world's most notorious diamond smuggling ring.Every year, a shadowy band of racketeers pirated a fortune in diamonds out of Africa, and the majority of the stolen gems wound up in the hands of Communist nations. In response, the IDSO commissioned a private army, led by legendary British spymaster Sir Percy Sillitoe, to penetrate and topple the ring. When the operation was complete, the Sunday Times gave the story to Fleming, who had impressed Sillitoe with his earlier Bond adventure Diamonds Are Forever. A remarkable feat of investigative journalism, The Diamond Smugglers is the thrilling true story behind one of the greatest spy operations in history.
