Digital disruption in healthcare is generating new technologies, applications, and large data sets, and these are all precipitating significant changes in healthcare processes. Emerging applications due to digital disruption and their impact on healthcare delivery and quality are becoming some of the key focus areas of research. However, to date, systematic, generalizable, full-scale evaluation of these new technologies/applications is lacking. Little is known about the net short- or long-term health and wellness impacts of digital technologies. Similarly, the care-delivery and management process changes caused by digital disruption are forcing healthcare organizations to react rather than plan for them in advance. Given these gaps, this book addresses the technology, applications, data, and process aspects of digital disruption in healthcare. This volume is a collection of key areas in health and wellness impacted by digital disruption. It highlights the benefits, barriers, facilitators, and transformative forces that are shaping healthcare digital disruption. Topics explored in the chapters include:Towards Network Medicine: Implementation of Panomics and Artificial Intelligence for Precision MedicineTelehealth Implementation: A Synopsis of Patients' Experience of Clinical OutcomesRealising the Healthcare Value Proposition of Better Access, Quality and Value of Care by Incorporating the Social Determinants of Health with Digital HealthThe Internet Hospital in the Time of COVID-19: An Example from China Given the diverse interest in healthcare delivery solutions today, the need is broad across academia and the healthcare industry for a comprehensive resource for teaching, practice, and research. Digital Disruption in Healthcare is a point-of-entry resource for transferring theory into practice for heads of IT departments in hospitals, consultants, and academia, as well as scholars and researchers. Both graduate and undergraduate students as well as certificate-seeking health informatics and public health students would benefit from this book. Furthermore, it is useful for healthcare stakeholders including healthcare professionals, clinicians, medical administrators, managers, consultants, policy-makers, and IT practitioners within the healthcare space.
This book is for readers who wish to understand the ethical implications of the COVID-19 pandemic ¿ holistically ¿ on communities, politics, the economy, the environment, international relations, public health, and, most importantly, on their own lives and their own futures. It also helps readers to think through the wide-ranging ethical implications of the new age of global pandemics. The COVID-19 pandemic has transformed all of our lives to such an extent that no single publication will ever be able to capture its complexity. The book acknowledges this complexity by embracing interdisciplinary dialogue. It is open to diverse points of view, different ethical systems, and a wide variety of academic disciplines. It suggests three broad avenues to exploring the subject: Ethics for Pandemics: What ethical theories are useful for pandemic living?Ethics in Pandemics: How are long-standing ethical dilemmas revealed in pandemics? Ethics of Pandemics: How should politicians and public health professionals create ethical systems of pandemic management? Interdisciplinary perspectives are another key feature of the book and reflect the important insights that many academic disciplines ¿ medical ethics and public health, history, political science, economics, behavioral and evolutionary psychology, and climate science ¿ bring to bear on the subject. In the chapters, the author joins theory and practice, providing an overview of the major ethical theories: Kant and DeontologyUtilitarianism and Consequentialist EthicsSocial Contract TheoryEgoism and AltruismVirtue Ethics It then uses these theories to analyze both COVID-19 and also historical pandemics, including typhus, smallpox, the Black Death, HIV/AIDS, and polio.Ethics and Pandemics: Interdisciplinary Perspectives on COVID-19 and Future Pandemics prepares readers to better understand ethical living during times of crisis. While written for students pursuing any discipline, it is particularly suited for those seeking degrees in public health, health care, political science, and philosophy. Furthermore, non-specialized readers and members of the general public will find the book of interest.
This book summarizes the broad and rapidly evolving field of geriatric pharmacotherapy, which is becoming increasingly relevant for practicing physicians who care and prescribe medications for older patients. Around the globe, ageing populations are associated with an increased prevalence of chronic diseases. Older adults are often affected by multimorbidity, i.e., suffer from more than one chronic disease. The main consequence of multimorbidity is polypharmacy, which is commonly defined as the regular use of five or more medicines. Polypharmacy has now reached epidemic proportions in our societies, and is associated with an increased risk of drug-drug interactions, drug-disease interactions and adverse drug reactions. The management of polypharmacy in older patients with complex multimorbidity poses several challenges and needs to be based on specific knowledge and prescribing expertise. The aim of this book is to provide a comprehensive update on thefield, and to share the expertise needed to optimize the management of pharmacotherapy in older patients.
Perinatal OCD is often misunderstood and misdiagnosed. Dr Chrishanthy Grace Jayarajah explains all the facets of perinatal OCD and how to best recognize, treat and support those with the condition during your encounters with them.

Excellence in service is needed in the Military Hospitals in Malaysia to ensure the best and the most effective services are delivered. One of the factors that contribute to the provision of excellent services is the presence of competent managers. In this book, we report the outcome of a study aimed to determine the level of service excellence among managers and the factors influencing it in five Military Hospitals under the Ministry of Defence, Malaysia. A cross sectional study was conducted using self-administered questionnaires distributed to Military and Non-Military managers with different demographic backgrounds and service characteristics. The questionnaires consist of six components: the background of the respondents; the level of service excellence; skills; knowledge of the Blue Ocean Strategy (BOS), leadership style, and organisational compliance. By using the Structural Equation Model, findings of the study showed that all independent variables, i.e., skills, knowledge on BOS, leadership style and organisational compliance are significantly related to service excellence. Using Stepwise Multiple Linear Regression, it was discovered that managers in the lower grades, as well as Non-Military managers, demonstrated significant service excellence. In conclusion, the service excellence of managers in Military Hospitals is strongly influenced by their competencies. Military Hospitals administration should focus into the needs for training and suitable courses for Military managers in senior position to enhance their competencies.
When my health began to slip I went looking for a cure. Up to that time the only use I'd had for doctors was to fix a few traumatic injuries. The only preventative health care I concerned myself with was to take a multivitamin pill during those rare spells when I felt a bit run down and to eat lots of vegetables. So I'd not learned much about alternative health care. Naturally, my first stop was a local general practitioner/MD. He gave me his usual half-hour get-acquainted checkout and opined that there almost certainly was nothing wrong with me. I suspect I had the good fortune to encounter an honest doctor, because he also said if it were my wish he could send me around for numerous tests but most likely these would not reveal anything either. More than likely, all that was wrong was that I was approaching 40; with the onset of middle age I would naturally have more aches and pains. 'Take some aspirin and get used to it,' was his advice. 'It'll only get worse.' Not satisfied with his dismal prognosis I asked an energetic old guy I knew named Paul, an '80-something homesteader who was renowned for his organic garden and his good health. Paul referred me to his doctor, Isabelle Moser, who at that time was running the Great Oaks School of Health, a residential and out-patient spa nearby at Creswell, Oregon. Dr. Moser had very different methods of analysis than the medicos, was warmly personal and seemed very safe to talk to. She looked me over, did some strange magical thing she called muscle testing and concluded that I still had a very strong constitution. If I would eliminate certain "bad" foods from my diet, eliminate some generally healthful foods that, unfortunately, I was allergic to, if I would reduce my alcohol intake greatly and take some food supplements, then gradually my symptoms would abate. With the persistent application of a little self-discipline over several months, maybe six months, I could feel really well again almost all the time and would probably continue that way for many years to come. This was good news, though the need to apply personal responsibility toward the solution of my problem seemed a little sobering.
Many fields of medicine have looked at the issue of transitioning care from pediatrics to adults. This book focuses on that transition within the field of sleep medicine. This book gathers and presents in volume information that will assist practitioners to transition the care of their pediatric patients suffering from sleep disorders. The book will discuss anatomical, physiological and psychological aspects as children grow into adulthood. Specifically, changes in brain function and anatomy, cardiorespiratory function and anatomy, and changes in facial structure are explored. Also discussed are the tools that are used for assessing sleep and how it may apply differently to children and adults. Chapters cover each group of sleep disorders with focus on how the diagnosis, prognosis, and management may change with the transition from childhood through adolescence to adulthood. In addition, gaps in needs and research are discussed.

There is often a communication disconnect between medical caregivers, including doctors, nurses, therapists, and other assistive medical personnel, and the patient. While medical staff usually understand a patient's symptoms, causes, and treatments, communicating this understanding to a patient using industry terminologies can lead to confusion and misunderstanding, and similarly, patients may lack the vocabulary to effectively communicate their experiences back to their caregivers. A new approach to communication must be bridged between these groups by individuals who have experience on both sides of the conversation. Previous studies of doctors who end up in the role of the patient reveal how these individuals have a dual perspective on illness, combining their medical knowledge with their own personal medical experiences. Narratives, including autobiographical accounts and fictional stories, can help bridge the gap between experiential and academic knowledge of illness by expanding one's limited perspective and accessing others' points of view. Autobiographical and fictional narratives can both play a role in developing a more comprehensive understanding of illness beyond simply treating the disease. It is necessary to further examine the ethical and methodological underpinnings of narrative-based interventions in the education of healthcare professionals, practitioners, and patients. Global Perspectives on Probing Narratives in Healthcare offers a multidisciplinary examination of theoretical and methodological uses of narratives in healthcare by bringing together medical aspects of healthcare and the study of arts and humanities. This illustrates specific applications of narratives in healthcare settings, including improvement of clinical skills, performance of the caring role, and self-efficacy for building a true partnership in the patient's health journey through varied approaches, up-to-date tools, and resources that can be transferred and adapted to specific educational and healthcare contexts. This diverse collection of expert knowledge and experience is led by editors with over 20 years of teaching experience: Dr. Teresa Casal of the University of Lisbon, Portugal and Dr. Maria de Jesus Cabral of the University of Minho, Portugal. Expertise featured in this book includes contributions from some of the most prestigious academic institutions, including Columbia University in the United States, King's College in the United Kingdom, University of Padua in Italy, and more. It is an essential resource for healthcare and social science researchers, academics, advanced healthcare students, health training and education departments, healthcare practitioners and patients' associations, and policymakers in healthcare who are looking to broaden their scope of understanding of the patient experience.

One third of misdiagnosed medical cases result in serious injury or death. Moreover, 40,000-80,000 deaths occur each year in the United States alone because of misdiagnosis. This is a major clinical crisis that medical schools and hospitals have failed to adequately address. There is currently no book available that provides general clinicians with the knowledge to prevent such lethal errors in a variety of disciplines.Composed of clinical cases, the book represents seventy chapters fashioned into sixteen modules and are organized by systems, such as allergy and immunology, cardiology, neurology and rheumatology, just to name a few. Each chapter is organized with a general introduction to the topic followed by the name of the specific disease. Next comes the actual clinical case presentation followed by the differential diagnosis. It then explains what was misdiagnosed in the specific case and why. A general discussion and plan of action is then described followed by a conclusion. Uniquely incorporated in the book is a chapter dedicated to the legal perspectives of misdiagnosis followed by an editor¿s perspective. The Misdiagnosis Casebook in Clinical Medicine is a valuable and much-needed resource for clinicians as well as practitioners in all areas of medicine.
This open access book bridges the divide between political science and public health, whilst simultaneously embracing the complexities and differences of both. Although public health is inherently political, the tools and insights of political science are often ignored in public health scholarship. Bringing together academics and researchers working at the intersection of both, the book demonstrates how integrating these fields can help reconcile the roles of politics and scientific evidence in policymaking. It also highlights the key conceptual, methodological and substantive implications for bridging this divide, and charts a path forward for a movement towards political science with public health. It will be of interest to academics, researchers and students interested in public health, political science, public policy, and the role of scientific evidence in policymaking.
Due to the high prevalence of Eating Disorders (ED) and obesity over the life-spam and the increasing comorbidity between both conditions, the goal of this Special Issue, "Eating Disorders and Obesity: Through the Life Course", is to approach that situation from a broader perspective. We would like to have multidisciplinary contributions, approaching ED and Obesity as potential continuum (eg. Anorexia nervosa and obesity as extreme dimensions), looking not only to shared and differential risk factors (environmental, temperamental, biological, nutritional and neuroendocrinological between ED and obesity), but also to epidemiological studies exploring transition from one to the other, through the life-course, and its impact on the treatment outcome. We are expecting to have systematic reviews and empirical studies (cross-sectional and longitudinal manuscripts), coming from all over the globe.
Growing evidence supports the important role of nutrition in health and performance. Nutritional interventions, alone or in combination with physical exercise, have proven effective for reducing the incidence of different chronic diseases and their associated risk factors (e.g., obesity, diabetes, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia). A healthy diet also seems to prevent many of the detrimental consequences of aging, notably sarcopenia and frailty. On the other hand, diet has been reported to influence physical performance, with nutrition, including nutritional supplements, being a cornerstone in the armamentarium of athletes. The role of nutrition seems, therefore, wide; however, although research is rapidly growing, controversy and debate still exists as to the optimal nutritional strategies for disease prevention and sports performance enhancement. The present Special Issue aimed to report recent findings on the role of nutrition in disease prevention and sports performance enhancement, as well as to summarize current evidence on these topics.
