At the same time, it emphasizes the importance of applying metrics to improve cost-effectiveness.Although primarily intended as a hands-on book for clinical leaders, it also considers hospitals from a broader societal perspective, making it of interest to leaders at all organizational levels in hospitals and to policymakers alike.

Access to health care is the ability to receive health services for the prevention, detection, and treatment of disorders that affect health. For health care to be accessible, it must be affordable and able to protect and improve health. There are myriad reasons that may make access to health services difficult or even impossible. These include economic problems, conflicts, climate change, internal and external migrations, beliefs, and so on. This book examines many of these barriers to health care and proposes solutions for overcoming them.

What is the missing link in today's medical care delivery?Medical school training has historically relied on the biological sciences, and their application, for diagnosis and treatment, with technology an adjunct to care. Although many major medical schools now incorporate "doctoring" into their curriculum, traditional medical training lacked an emphasis on the psycho-social aspects of the doctor-patient relationship. As medicine hurtles forward in the age of technology and corporate healthcare, the chasm between medicine and human connection continues to grow. Doctors are led away from the bedside into a computerized world. This distancing threatens the essence of compassionate care.In a mesmerizing exploration of the solution, Jay H. Kleiman, M.D., recounts the profound career moments that define the doctor-patient partnership, illuminating the path toward preventing physician burnout. Art of the Heart is a masterpiece that uses patient stories to showcase an accomplished career and remind us that high-touch care remains an irreplaceable cornerstone for a therapeutic relationship and healing.Step into the world of medicine's beating heart and rediscover the spiritual connection that elevates doctors into healers called to serve.

Hospital-based physicians are privy to some of the most meaningful moments of people¿s lives, including life-changing diagnoses, pivotal medical procedures, complex medical decisions, and critical end-of-life decisions. Yet, hospitalists have no framework for how to incorporate the varied social factors that impact care such as race, gender identity, cultural background, immigration status, sexual orientation, primary language, housing status, and poverty into clinical decision-making. As hospital physicians, we may use interpreters for our limited English proficiency patients, or try to incorporate questions about cultural practices into our admission histories, or even ask our patients about the ways in which they feel racism has affected their care, but these practices are inconsistently applied and lack a systematic framework for ensuring that the hospital care we provide is truly equitable. In my own practice as a hospital-based physician, I can recall scoresof hospitalized patients where we tried hard to provide equitable care, but fell short. I remember the Spanish-speaking patient with multiple comorbidities who received neurosurgery and was on the road to recovery on an acute care unit, when on day three, he complained of vague abdominal discomfort and ended up dying of a perforated bowel. No interpreter was used by the team to fully delve into the details of the pain he was experiencing. I remember the young Black patient with terminal malignancy who had multiple repeated conversations with physicians recommending hospice care but refused until he saw a physician who was able to explain hospice within the context of racism that has historically defined clinical care for Black people, and was able to present hospice not as a way to hasten death but rather as a way to live the remainder of his days in comfort. I remember the elderly Pakistani female patient whose demanding son antagonized staff and clinicians alike until he was banned from visiting because of his aggressiveness with staff and whose inability to visit his mother caused her extreme distress as she felt that she had lost the unique voice that only her oldest son could provide. Imagine if the hospital physicians in these cases had a resource to help them provide care that is culturally humble, that goes beyond just speaking in the patient¿s first language but that also includes active listening and truly takes into consideration the life experiences and culture that have made this patient who they are. This is what this book will provide for hospital medicine physicians, a framework to help hospital physicians deeply incorporate social factors into the care they provide.

The fields of cyberpsychology, e-health and virtual reality have evolved during the last 20 years and this Special Issue is devoted to recent developments in the understanding and treatment of psychological and mental disorders. Researchers have studied how mental health can be delivered online decades before the COVID-19 pandemic. This knowledge suddenly became invaluable when professionals had to find alternative ways to provide psychotherapy and other services. Reprints from articles about telepsychology include results from randomized control trials and studies trying to isolate and understand factors involved in treatment processes and acceptability. It is followed by a literature review on virtual reality applications on mental health. The authors then address how the human body is experienced and how it impacts body image and pain. The Special Issue concludes with innovative work on how virtual reality could be used for depression.

Several factors have been identified as interfering with the success, rehabilitation, and fitness of athletes from childhood to adulthood, as well as in para-sport, and special populations, according to research. The performance and health of this population are affected by the relationships between stress, maturation, training load, and recovery. Environmental approaches aim to increase efficiency and physiological adaptations in this sense. In various situations and conditions, however, this stimulus-performance-adaptation relationship varies. As a result, we received contributions related (but not limited) to the following topics: training load monitoring; stress and physiological responses during exercise or sports; recovery process after exercise; changes after stress and/or training load; physiology of training in health and sports performance.

This textbook explores issues central to the provision of recovery-orientated care based on ethical principles and human rights perspectives. Written by academics and nurse practitioners, this comprehensive text draws together theory, research and practice to map the landscape of Advanced Practice in Mental Health Nursing (APMHN) in Europe. Underpinned by a rights- and relational- based approach to care, the textbook is organized around six themes: theoretical and historical perspectives; foundations for collaborative working; therapeutic engagement in different contexts; beyond the clinical dimension of the APMHN role; advancing the evidence-based practice agenda and emerging issues and challenges. Each theme consists of a number of chapters that are designed to address different aspects of APMHN. Global immunization rates were stagnating prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, and declined further in 2020 and 2021, with substantial variation. Across countries, the level of protection afforded by immunization varies, with many countries reporting gaps in coverage of Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) and seasonal influenza, and many population subgroups, especially children, being left behind. In this Special Issue, we explore the latest evidence on various types of immunization across the life course at global, regional, national, and subnational levels. Exploring various dimensions of inequality-such as economic status, subnational geographic regions, sex, maternal education-and other categories, this issue includes contributions characterizing the situation of inequality, the drivers of inequality, and finally, actions and initiatives that hold promise for enhancing equity of immunization across countries.

Lower extremity skin disorders are often overlooked by clinicians. Ailments such as eczema, psoriasis and tinea at times prove difficult to distinguish clinically, and misdiagnosis can lead to inappropriate therapy. Many practitioners are mystified when confronted with an abnormal appearing nail. Delay in recognizing skin cancer may adversely impact morbidity and mortality. This full-color atlas is a concise guide for medical professionals who deal with the lower extremities and will aid in both diagnosis and treatment. Topics featured in the Atlas include nail pathology, fungal and bacterial infections, xerotic and hyperkeratotic disorders, autoimmune diseases and vasculopathies, benign and malignant lesions, systemic diseases, and ulcerations. Each chapter contains vibrant photographic representative examples. Concluding chapters present a review of biopsy techniques as well as an overview of current dermatological therapies.  The Atlas of Lower Extremity Skin Disease is a unique resource for podiatrists, dermatologists, and primary care physicians as well as nurse practitioners and physician assistants.
