The first comprehensive overview of Peter Weibel’s visionary work, covering over half a century of artistic expression from material to machines to media.Peter Weibel: Art as an Act of Cognition presents the first comprehensive overview of the work of Peter Weibel (1944–2023), an influential artist who anticipated key developments in the art of the late twentieth and twenty-first centuries and evolved new utopian visions of a free society and individual freedom. As one of the first artists to create VR installations, Weibel was also a leading figure in the expansion of the arts into other modes of reality. His work revealed the perceptual mechanisms by which reality is constructed not only socially, but also neurologically. This publication, insightfully edited by Jens Lutz and Philipp Ziegler, covers over half a century of his artistic expression, and traces his groundbreaking migration from material to machines to media.This book follows the trajectory of Weibel’s work with various media—from literature to photography, from performance art to video to expanded cinema, from sculpture, sound art, and light art to digital artworks. This book is based on an institutional evolutionary theoretical view to the Göta kanal. Canals were the major transport infrastructure system besides roads and maritime transport until railroads were introduced. The canal studied is the Swedish Göta kanal project during the preparation and construction phase from 1800¿1832. Thus, the Göta kanal, and the canal-era, is seen from a technological, an economic and a political perspective. Comparisons are made with two contemporary major canal-projects; the Erie Canal in the USA (1817¿1825) and the Caledonian Canal in Britain (1804¿1822). It is argued that the Göta kanal project, as Sweden's Mega Project of its time, represented an important development step in Sweden as regards learning and innovation and became a starting point for Swedish transport infrastructure projects in the time to come, primarily the railways.

This monograph represents the outcome of research effort of the authors on scalable synchronization of large-scale multi-agent systems (MAS). Cooperative control of multi-agent systems has been growing in popularity and is highly interdisciplinary in recent years. The application of synchronization of MAS includes automobile systems, aerospace systems, multiple-satellite GPS, high-resolution satellite imagery, aircraft formations, highway traffic platooning, industrial process control with multiple processes, and more. Most of the proposed protocols in the literature for synchronization of MAS require some knowledge of the communication network such as bounds on the spectrum of the associated Laplacian matrix and the number of agents. These protocols suffer from scale fragility wherein stability properties are lost for large-scale networks or when the communication graph changes. In the past few years, the authors of this monograph have worked on developing scale-free protocol design for various cases of MAS problems. The key contribution of the monograph is to offer a scale-free design framework and provide scale-free protocols to achieve synchronization, delayed synchronization, and almost synchronization in the presence of input and communication delays, input saturation and external disturbances. The scale-free design framework solely is based on the knowledge of agent models and does not depend on information about the communication network such as the spectrum of the associated Laplacian matrix or size of the network. Drawing upon their extensive work in this area, the authors provide a thorough treatment of agents with higher-order dynamics, different classes of models for agents, and the underlying networks representing actions of the agents. The high technical level of their presentation and their rigorous mathematical approach make this monograph a timely and valuable resource that will fill a gap in the existing literature.

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are new category of wireless networks that aregaining importance in large number in civilian and military applications. WSN is adistributed and autonomous sensor device used for monitoring physical or environmentalconditions. Sensor nodes are part of WSNs and are tiny in size. They are connected and communicate with each other to exchangedata and information. These nodes are capable of sensing temperature, humidity,pollution level in environment, atmospheric pressure and transfer these informationto a base station (BS) which is also termed as sink. Some of the applications includeweather monitoring, movement of vehicles in highways, movement of wild animals inforest, battlefield surveillance and industrial applications. Nodes in the networkcommunicate among themselves through wireless medium and the same medium isused to transfer data from sensor nodes to sink. Sensors are equipped with batteryas source of energy which gets drained quickly and in many situations they are notreplaceable. Therefore, there is a need to design protocols for different layers whichare energy aware. The objective of this chapter is to highlight the techniques, issues,challenges and applications of WSN.

With the deep integration of cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence, big data, and the Internet, ship propulsion control systems are also gradually undergoing a transformation from the mode of automatic control to intelligent control. In particular, the smart ship concept has become a key factor in the maritime industry's ambition to achieve sustainable green development. Currently, the development of all-electric propulsion and innovative hybrid ship propulsion systems is a priority, so that the efficiency of ship propulsion systems might be improved. Therefore, the aim of this monograph is to describe the intelligent control of ship propulsion systems. In this regard, this monograph deals with new approaches to the design of ship power systems. There has been an increased interest in renewable energy sources in the last few decades. Modern power systems rely mainly on power electronic-based generation and loads, leading to the adoption of smart grids that leverage digital communication infrastructure. Smart grids have several advantages, including the potential to provide consumers with a continuous power supply, reduced line losses, enhanced renewable output and storage, consumer participation in electricity markets, and demand-side responsiveness. Future power systems, also known as smart grids, will rely more on renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind, as well as storage. Power electronic converters are used in renewable energy generation and storage. Each converter/inverter manufacturer has an algorithm for programming and optimizing hardware. Furthermore, these converters rely on communication protocols to respond to any signal from the system operator. As a result, cyber-attacks on these smart converters/inverters are a concern. Although numerous cyber-physical systems (CPS) have been presented, no universal CPS standard can be employed with various types of converters. This reprint is a collection of specialized work addressing cybersecurity challenges.
This reprint explores the latest developments and advancements in the application of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) for forecasting and optimization in the field of power engineering. In recent years, AI and ML methods have been gaining significant traction and are becoming two of the most important fields in computing. These methods have proven to be effective in solving forecasting and optimization problems in power engineering. The topics covered in the chapters fall into four categories: electricity demand forecasting, wind power forecasting, photovoltaic power forecasting, and optimization.
Renewable energy resources are used as distributed generation (DG) units and installed near to where the energy is converted and consumed. Further, the integration of renewable energy sources at home is very important. IoT helps smart grids to support various network functions throughout the generation, distribution, and consumption of energy by incorporating IoT devices (such as sensors, actuators, and smart meters), as well as by providing connectivity, automation, and tracking for such devices. For these applications, the use of low-power long-range wireless networks (LPWAN) is fundamental to facilitate all the necessary tasks in the smart grids in City 4.0 and Industry 4.0. The integration of renewable energies (photovoltaic solar, wind energy, biomass energy, hydroelectric energy, and other sources) in smart grids implies the monitoring of households, cities, industries, and electric vehicles at all times. In this sense, the development of monitoring and control applications using mobile devices is a fundamental tool in this type of system, which complements all the possibilities offered by the IoT. Smart energy meters are used to allow for communication between consumers and utility command centers to exchange messages about electrical consumption. Thus, it is essential to have access from any location and instant access to information using mobile devices or computers.
Energy storage and conversion are crucial research and industry topics, especially within the context of sustainable development. Scientific and technological progress in these fields have the potential to improve energy use efficiency across traditional, renewable and unconventional sources. This book presents a comprehensive review of recent developments in vanadium-based nanomaterials for next-generation electrochemical energy storage. Das vorliegende Buch zielt darauf ab, die verschiedenen Konzeptionen des ¿Menschen¿, die eng mit der Produktion von anthropologischem Wissen in einem technowissenschaftlichen Umfeld verbunden sind, zu untersuchen. Hierfür sollen historische und philosophische Perspektiven auf die anthropologische Frage, die den Technowissenschaften des 21. Jahrhunderts innewohnt, zusammen gebracht werden und ein Beitrag zur aktuellen historischen und philosophischen Debatte über die kognitiven, produktiven und anthropologischen Modi geleistet werden. Die unterschiedlichen Problematisierungen, die dabei relevant sind, drehen sich um die Fragen: Ist die technowissenschaftliche Wissensproduktion immer mit einem bestimmten Bild des Menschen verbunden? Inwieweit sind die zugeschriebenen Eigenschaften des Menschen konstitutiv für die Entwicklung der Technowissenschaft?
