En sikker base er John Bowlbys sidste værk og samler otte forelæsninger fra 1979-88 om tilknytningsteori og det terapeutiske arbejde. Hvad enten ens primære tilknytningsmønster er trygt, undvigende eller ambivalent fortsætter denne adfærd i voksenlivet. Trygge børn er selvsikre og bruger forældrene som en “sikker base”, mens de udforsker verden. Bowlbys arbejde viste, at det tidlige samspil mellem spædbarn og omsorgsperson har stor indflydelse på barnets sociale, følelsesmæssige og intellektuelle vækst.
