Advances in Natural Gas: Formation, Processing, and Applications. Volume 1: Natural Gas Formation and Extraction comprises an extensive eight-volume series delving into the intricate realms of both the theoretical fundamentals and practical methodologies associated with various facets of natural gas. Encompassing the entire spectrum from exploration and extraction to synthesis, processing, purification, and the generation of valuable chemicals and energy, these volumes also navigate through the complexities of transportation, storage challenges, hydrate formation, extraction, and prevention. Volume 1, entitled Advances in Natural Gas: Formation, Processing, and Applications. Volume 1: Natural Gas Formation and Extraction, provides a detailed exposition of the characteristics and properties inherent to natural gas. This book navigates through diverse formation and synthesis techniques sourced from both nonrenewable origins, such as coal and oil shale, and renewable origins, encompassing biomass, sewage, algae, and food wastes as viable precursors for natural gas. The volume further delves into the intricacies of extraction methodologies applied across distinct reservoirs. Additionally, it systematically addresses the associated environmental challenges inherent to natural gas.
The second edition of this Palgrave Pivot offers a history of and proof against claims of "buying power" and the impact this myth has had on understanding media, race, class and economics in the United States. For generations Black people have been told they have what is now said to be more than one trillion dollars of "buying power," and this book argues that commentators have misused this claim largely to blame Black communities for their own poverty based on squandered economic opportunity. This book exposes the claim as both a marketing strategy and myth, while also showing how that myth functions simultaneously as a case study for propaganda and commercial media coverage of economics. In sum, while ¿buying power¿ is indeed an economic and marketing phrase applied to any number of racial, ethnic, religious, gender, age or group of consumers, it has a specific application to Black America. A new foreword by Dr. Darrick Hamilton, Henry Cohen Professor of Economics and Urban Policy at the New School (in New York, USA), and a new chapter on cryptocurrencies are included in this new edition.
This book showcases the discussion about megaprojects carried out at the MeRIT (Megaproject Research Interdisciplinary Team) workshop 2022: the crisis, discontinuity, rising prices, and supply chains disruption force radical reflection for those involved in megaprojects. It raises a modern-day challenge, the creation of value for stakeholders. Indeed, the aim of the volume is to encourage readers to think more broadly, articulately and less stringently than the mainstream claims. There is a need to design, implement, and manage megaprojects by abandoning the old paradigm that leveraged solely on time and cost. We need to move beyond that by going to explore the value generated, the positive impact on people, communities and territories. Economic, social and environmental sustainability takes on a new and broader articulation: issues of the circular economy applied to megaprojects are addressed and ample space is ensured for the inclusion of social needs in current practices.
This is the first known book on economic evaluations specifically geared to oral health professionals. The book serves as a starting point that explains the concepts and tools required for practitioners with little or no formal training or experience in economic evaluation to conduct such evaluations in oral health(care). It provides the foundation for applying economic evaluation principles to oral health programs as well as more advanced technical information for those interested in acquiring knowledge of health economics within the context of oral health care.In the book, the authors describe the different types of economic evaluation and discuss their role and application in oral health care. Topics explored among the chapters include:Why carry out an economic evaluation in oral health care?Aspects of decision modelling for economic evaluation in oral health careInterpreting economic evaluation in oral healthWorked examples in cost-effectiveness, cost-benefit, and cost-utility analysesAssessing the quality and usefulness of economic evaluation in oral health: a practical approach for cliniciansUsing economic evaluations to inform decision-making in oral health: TransferabilityEconomic evaluation: uses and potential uses in oral health policy developmentIntroduction to Economic Evaluation in Oral Health Care has an applied orientation that emphasizes practical solutions to managing existing problems and situations in oral health care. As such, the book is essential reading for oral health professionals including dentists, oral health therapists, and dental hygienists, as well as students in the oral health professions. The text is also an appropriate and useful resource for other health practitioners and managers who are interested in enhancing their practical understanding of economic evaluation including health economists and other health professionals and decision-makers.
This book analyzes the informal practices of contemporary cities through a close dialogue between different research perspectives, with the shared goal of giving voice to informality and evaluating its benefits and potential in a multidimensional key of social factors. Recently, the human sciences have seen the emergence of this new term ¿informality,¿ at first sight in conflict with their function of giving order and form to social phenomena. A term with which, in this book, the authors, having as reference the Italian and European experience, specifically identify those unsatisfied social demands and those collective actions ¿from below¿ that aim at the recovery of urban space and the renewal of its organization, often not following the trajectories of legality and institutions. By means of a close dialogue between different areas of social research, this book attempts to establish the different declinations and applications of the term, evaluating the causes and effects, benefits, and potential of the phenomena attributable to it, within a multidimensional analysis that calls into question the regeneration and collective use of spaces, political-institutional confrontation and conflict, legal innovation, and social-economic benefits.
This book presents a unique real-world-centred approach to economic life from a phenomenological approach. It offers a much-needed alternative to conventional economic thinking, giving a transdisciplinary depiction of the economic process's social, cultural, technological, political, and ecological dimensions. Doing so appeals to students and researchers in economics aiming to get an alternative to the reductionist model-based approach.Written in a jargon-free and non-technical way, it appeals to non-economists alike and those seeking a more profound and living understanding of the economic process. What is the role of nature in the economic process? Is there more to economics than we have been told? Do we have infinite needs? What are these needs? Can we keep on growing forever? Does economic growth improve our wellbeing? Why is the income gap widening? What is the role of financial capital in our current world? Are there other forms of producing, distributing, and consuming wealth beyond markets? What are the functions of markets, and how do they work in the real world? These and many other aspects are discussed in living and holistic ways in this book. It is a must-read for all those interested in gaining a more profound and genuine understanding of our current reality and those looking for ways out of our current crises.
This book investigates how the EU member states¿ domestic energy policies have transformed in the last two decades as a consequence of horizontal and vertical integration forces. Integration is a dynamic process where member states adopt community rules, norms, and values, and meanwhile, learn from each other¿s experiences. Today, Europe experiences an energy transition from fossil-fuels to cleaner sources of energy and European policy makers are committed to taking this significant step forward. Domestic structural change is, thus, observed in all member states¿ environmental and energy policies. This book presents an overview of the EU norms, legislation, and policy standards for renewable energies and analyses how member states transpose them into their domestic structure. The book also analyses the policy outcomes in the EU member states in a comparative perspective by using the most recent statistical data. This comparative analysis gives insight to investors anddevelopers to decide on investment projects and/or manufacturing of renewable energy devices to these countries. It also provides a useful reference for policy makers, academics, students, and NGOs who need a quick overview of relevant national and EU legislation, policy standards, and policy outcomes.
This book was jointly launched by the National Academy of Economic Strategy of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and UN-HABITAT. It uses the indicator system and objective data to evaluate the competitiveness of 1006 cities in the world and measures the overall development pattern of global punishment and competitiveness. The important theoretical and practical issues in the development of global cities are discussed. The book looks at the world from the perspective of cities and believes that the world will be fully urbanized in the 300 years from 1750 to 2050. The book points out the challenges faced by global municipal financing and systematically summarizes the experience and methods of municipal financing and concludes that the average competitiveness of global cities declined slightly due to the decline of the average competitiveness of cities in China, the USA and Europe. In addition, this book also launched the new global urban classification standard of the Institute of Finance and Strategy of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and the United Nations Human Settlements Programme for the first time and rated 1006 cities in the world.
Globalised neoliberal capitalism continues to entrench inequality, environmental degradation, and social division. The Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais Sem Terra (MST), or Brazilian Landless Rural Workers Movement, offer us a route beyond any theoretical impasse or reluctant acquiescence to the enduring social and economic status quo. Through time spent working and being among the MST many of their defining features and practices are mapped. These include land occupations; the organisation of work co-operatively; the practising of agro-ecology; participatory democracy; implementation of gender quotas for community leadership positions; and the application of principles based upon the 'common good'. From these experiences, challenges, and successes there is a great deal that we as a global community can learn from MST communities as we think about alternative, just futures.

"A New York Times bestselling author and leading expert on market risk argues that seismic shifts in the global economy will trigger a multi-trillion-dollar migration of wealth, tracing the fateful decisions that created this crisis-and outlines new rules of investing for the forward-thinking. From Wall Street to the White House, the fantasy of an eventual 'return to normal' is still alive and well, nurtured by dangerously outdated theories. But the economic world as we know it--andthe rules that govern it--are over. In the coming decade, we'll witness sustained inflation, a series of sovereign and corporate debt crises, and a thundering of capital out of financial assets into hard assets-and few are prepared. Lawrence McDonald got a real-world education in market risk when, as a Lehman Brothers VP, he watched the firm ignore flashing warning signs before its collapse. His analysis led him to identify twenty-one indicators for gauging the health of an economy and detecting early signals of opportunity and danger. In How to Listen When Markets Speak, McDonald unveils his unique predictive models, connecting surprising dots between past, present, and future and outlining actionable trading ideas. Rather than merely doomsaying, How to Listen When Markets Speak equips readers to make sense of our current moment, resist reactionary narratives and baseless analysis, and pounce on a new investing playbook"--
This thesis studies the urban history of Mumbai from the perspective of popular Hindi films. The change of the name from Bombay to Mumbai in 1995 is symbolic of the transition of the colonial city from a centre of industrial capitalism to a neoliberal city, characterised by finance capital. It also signals the massive changes in the social and the political spheres of the city. Thomas Blom Hansen's Violence in Urban India starts its narrative of the city with a conversation that the author had on a suburban train, few weeks before the official rechristening. He asked an elderly gentleman about his reaction to the proposed change of the city's name from Bombay to Mumbai. While poring over an article in the English daily, Times of India, regarding the change of name of the city, the gentleman promptly answered: "its proper name is Bombay."
This book is devoted to strengthening the theoretical and methodological basis, systematization of international experience, and scientific elaboration of prospects for developing a climate-smart economy and business as a vector of the sustainable development of Industry 4.0 in the Decade of Action. The first part of the book focuses on climate-responsible entrepreneurship in support of the sustainable development of Industry 4.0. The part systematizes best practices for climate-smart green innovations across sectors of the digital economy. The third part reveals the experience of climate risk management based on smart green innovations in regions and countries. Particular attention is paid to the best practices of the European Union (EU) and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU). The book ends with part four, which explores ESG climate risk management and green finance in support of combating climate change. The book¿s novelty is that it rethinks the environmental footprints of Industry 4.0 from the perspective of climate risks and their management. The theoretical significance of the book lies in the formation of an innovative concept of climate change risk management, in which the economy, society, nature, and technology are presented and interact effectively. The book is intended for scientists. In this book, they will find an innovative and systemic vision of smart green innovations in Industry 4.0 for climate change risk management.
In epistemology there has been a recent upsurge of interest in the so-called 'value problem'.1 The genesis of this refreshing new body of work is the apparent intuition that knowledge is valuable, indeed something especially valuable. Attention to the value of knowledge raises a two-fold problem for contemporary epistemology. First, the original Meno problem itself (in the form of a prima facie puzzle about the relative values of knowledge and true belief) remains very much alive, and second, many contemporary analyses of knowledge, driven largely by increasingly specific and detailed responses and counter-responses to the Gettier problem, can seem baroque and complex, and to fail to capture the importance of knowledge for our lives. For these reasons, the issue of the value of knowledge looms particularly large today. Regarding the first point (that the problem is alive), it certainly seems true on the face of it that knowledge is more valuable than simply having the right belief about something (say, by accident). However, accidentally true beliefs seem to do a fine job getting us what we want in many situations. While epistemologists are still for the most part convinced that lucky guesses are not knowledge, lucky guesses seem to get us all the practical benefits of knowledge. Say that I find myself in a forest and I need to eat some mushrooms to survive. In this particular forest, there are only a few mushrooms that are edible; the rest are lethally poisonous. I can have the true belief "these mushrooms are edible" in a couple of ways: as a 'merely' true belief, or as an item of knowledge. If I randomly look at the edible group of mushrooms and form the belief, then I have a merely true belief by means of a lucky guess. If I have put in the time to research the edibility of various forest mushrooms, and use this preparation to identify the edible mushrooms, then I have knowledge that these are the edible mushrooms
Digital healthcare is heterogeneous along the entire treatment pathway, ranging from monitoring applications and artificial-intelligence-based diagnostics, to support for virtual reality surgery. Since the introduction of the Digital Health Act in Germany in early 2020, there has been a push toward digital innovative solutions, especially in the outpatient sector. This book analyzes current digital health law from an economic perspective, combining theory with real-world applications. It examines both the incentives and market access pathways for digital solutions and the price effects brought about by the new regulatory framework in Germany. Further, it discusses the difficulties in pricing due to the monopolistic BfArM register and negotiations with the association of all German health insurance companies. The book addresses a wide range of topics, including incentives for innovation, specifics of digital health applications, reimbursement and financing options for digital health solutions. Lastly, it presents an outlook for the future and a comparison between Germany and other countries, namely the USA and Japan. Given its scope, this book will appeal to scholars of health economics, healthcare management and public health, as well as practitioners and professionals in the public health sector.
This book explains China's approach to carbon peaking and carbon neutrality. It provides knowledge related to emission peak and carbon neutrality in terms of the concept and connotations, practice path, energy basis, investment demand, technological innovation, consumption revolution, comprehensive response, carbon pricing mechanism, city leadership, goal synergy, role of carbon sinks, and global cooperation and gives answers to questions such as the profound significance of emission peak and carbon neutrality, Chinäs strategic considerations for setting the dual carbon goals, how should China achieve the dual carbon goals, and what far-reaching impact will the dual carbon campaign have on China and the world. It discusses the wide-ranging content in an easy-to-understand way. This book is a reference for global readers to learn about green and low-carbon development in China.
This book, from the perspectives of the spatial and intergenerational externalities of environmental public goods, provides a comprehensive overview of the concepts and theories concerning environmental public goods supply and illustrates how to design the mechanism for promoting resident participation in effective environmental public goods supply under the guidance of the government. Noticeably, an intergenerational overlapping model for resident participation in environmental public goods supply has been created in the book, which generates new ideas for mitigating the long-standing forward intergenerational goods shortage. Moreover, this book uses happiness dataset to measure the feasibility of resident participation in environmental public goods supply and also makes a comparison between two supply models: Government Provide Model and Residents, Enterprises and Government Provide Model, so as to offer theoretically feasible suggestions. Not only is this book highly recommended for professionals in government units, universities, and research institutions that are engaged in environmental governance, but it can be used as a reference book for students of relevant majors in institutions of higher learning.
This landmark first anthropological open access volume on the topic of 'circular economies' brings together a range of international scholars with regional specialisations in Europe, Africa, Asia, and South America to examine the concept's global implications. Aspirations towards circular economies have become increasingly prominent around the world, yet until now, social anthropology has largely neglected the potentially deep social impacts of this concept, focusing instead on metrics of waste, despite its obvious implications through every level of the economy and society." Xenophon the Athenian was born 431 B.C. He was a pupil of Socrates. He marched with the Spartans, and was exiled from Athens. Sparta gave him land and property in Scillus, where he lived for many years before having to move once more, to settle in Corinth. He died in 354 B.C. The Economist records Socrates and Critobulus in a talk about profitable estate management, and a lengthy recollection by Socrates of Ischomachus' discussion of the same topic. INTERLOCUTORS Socrates and Critobulus At Chapter VII. a prior discussion held between Socrates and Ischomachus is introduced: On the life of a "beautiful and good" man. In these chapters (vii.-xxi.) Socrates is represented by the author as repeating for the benefit of Critobulus and the rest certain conversations which he had once held with the beautiful and good Ischomachus on the essentials of economy. It was a tete-a-tete discussion, and in the original Greek the remarks of the two speakers are denoted by such phrases as {ephe o 'Iskhomakhos-ephen egio}-"said (he) Ischomachus," "said I." (Socrates) To save the repetition of expressions tedious in English, I have, whenever it seemed help to do so, ventured to throw parts of the reported conversations into dramatic form, inserting "Isch." "Soc." in the customary way to designate the speakers; but these, it must be borne in mind, are merely "asides" to the reader, who will not forget that Socrates is the narrator throughout-speaking of himself as "I," and of Ischomachus as "he," or by his name.
The cooperative banks' business model is unique in the financial market. It is featured by democratic foundations (one-head-one-vote principle), proximity to the members and the community they serve, limited profit-seeking nature, and prudent management. However, these principles are applied in a variety of organisational structures and economic and regulatory contexts, making cooperative banks significantly different from one country to another. This book expands existing knowledge on the European cooperative banking sector by analysing recent trends affecting cooperative banks. Namely, the book discusses the role of cooperative banks in the policy and societal movement towards sustainability, including in adopting sustainable finance practices. It explores the digital transformation journey of cooperative banks and the impact of the consolidation of Fintech players in the financial services markets. It further showcases the need to evolve the cooperative banks' governance structures and processes in order to foster (and in some cases restore) democracy and transparency in the decision-making. Lastly, the book debates the specific role of cooperative banks in the economic crisis that has followed the unfolding of the Covid-19 pandemic vis-a-vis their members and the communities they serve. Of interest to scholars, professors, students, and practitioners of banking and finance, this book will build on the existing research and explore the latest trends in the space.
