In 2023, the Brent oil benchmark, a key international oil price marker for global crude oil underwent a substantial change. It incorporated another key benchmark, West Texas Intermediate oil from Midland, produced in the US and sold into European and Asian markets. Brent is used to set prices for over 70 per cent of global crude oil, so this fundamental change in the composition of the benchmarks is making some observers question its future development and even its survival. Lessons from the past are very important for the future, particularly in this case. This book revisits the history and genesis of the Brent oil benchmark and how it came to dominate the global oil market for oil. With chapters written by the individuals involved in trading and shaping the market, it brings the richness and texture to the usual historical narrative by recalling the events, companies and people who shaped its history. It introduces the historical background to the international oil markets and the reasons for a move from OPEC-set prices to oil benchmarks. It discusses the role of the North Sea in the international oil markets, as well as the role of the British government in the British national oil and gas monopoly (British National Oil Corporation or BNOC). The development of the North Sea oil, which coincided with the liberalisation policies in the UK and US, is also discussed, alongside the challenges of the oil exchange (International Petroleum Exchange) in London, the home of Brent and looks at the failures, attempted takeovers, and its eventual sale to the Intercontinental Exchange (ICE). It finally discusses the growing market ecosystem of the price reporting agencies (PRAs), which play a key role in establishing the value of the Brent benchmark.

This book sheds new light on the evolution and transformation of polytheistic religions. By applying economic models to the study of religious history and by viewing religious events as the result of rational choices under given environmental constraints, it offers a political economy perspective for the study of Indo-European polytheism. The book formally models the rivalry or competition among multiple gods in a polytheistic system and the monotheistic solution to this competition. Presenting case studies on the transformation and demise of various polytheistic religions, it highlights the pivotal role of the priestly class in driving religious change and suggests a joint explanation for the demise of Greco-Roman religion and the resilience of Hinduism and Zoroastrianism. It will appeal to scholars of the economics of religion and religious history and to anyone seeking new insights into the birth and death of religions, and the birth of monotheism in particular.

"This is an eye-opening, must-read blockbuster of a book showing how banks' money and power corrupts Washington and our financial system. Compellingly and insightfully connecting the dots, Gerald Epstein details how the bankers' club is also a literal club, beating down opposition and hardworking Americans, and concludes with a visionary plan for how the system can be changed to benefit all Americans."--Dennis M. Kelleher, President and CEO, Better Markets "Busting the Bankers' Club reminds us that the United States has still not fixed the weaknesses in its banking system to prevent financial meltdowns. Epstein exposes why the fault lines are still there and what we can do to prepare for the next disaster when no amount of regulation is sufficient."--Jennifer Taub, author of Big Dirty Money and host of the podcast Booked Up with Jen Taub "An essential guide to all that's gone so deeply wrong in the US financial sector. 'Roaring finance' has destroyed the economy and upended the lives of working people (and too often distorted the priorities of those who represent them). A 'bankers' club' now threatens democracy by amplifying the power of Wall Street. Epstein offers a concrete road map for bold yet achievable strategies to reclaim finance for the social good."--Ilene Grabel, author of When Things Don't Fall Apart: Global Financial Governance and Developmental Finance in an Age of Productive Incoherence "Busting the Bankers' Club is a revealing look behind the curtain of the banking industry's various crises and failures. Instead of focusing on the policies or practices that lead to such disparate economic outcomes in our economy, Epstein hones in on the network of people, from bankers to lobbyists to academic economists, who tightly control the credit and capital structure that rightfully belongs to the people. Epstein's account correctly identifies an often-overlooked source of unfairness and also points the way forward through a more democratic and just banking system run for and on behalf of the people. This book is a must-read for students of finance and activists alike, written by a foremost scholar in the field. The book is timely, necessary, and enlightening."--Mehrsa Baradaran, Professor of Law, University of California, Irvine "Gerald Epstein's Busting the Bankers' Club is an indispensable guide to how the financial elite made banking a self-serving and unstable cartel, and how to turn banking back into the servant of the real economy rather than the master."--Robert Kuttner, coeditor of The American Prospect and Professor of Social Policy and Management, Brandeis University "Read this book before the bankers get it banned. In lucid and accessible prose, Epstein tells us what's wrong with the bankers' club and what should be done to bust it apart and build finance that works for the rest of us."--Fred Block, Research Professor of Sociology, University of California, Davis

  • - A Health Economic Primer
af Stefan Felder & Thomas Mayrhofer
    671,95 kr.

This textbook offers a comprehensive theory of medical decision making under uncertainty, combining informative test theory with the expected utility hypothesis. The book shows how the parameters of Bayes' theorem can be combined with a value function of health states to arrive at informed test and treatment decisions. The authors distinguish between risk neutral, risk averse and prudent decision makers and demonstrate the effects of risk preferences on physicians' decisions. They analyze individual tests, multiple tests and endogenous tests where the test result is determined by the decision maker. Finally, the topic is examined in the context of health economics by introducing a trade-off between enjoying health and consuming other goods, so that the extent of treatment and thus the potential improvement in the patient's health become endogenous.

This book focuses on the notion of the environmental sustainability of the economy. The Sustainable Development Goals, formulated by the UN, led to the formation of a concept of the environmental sustainability of the economy. This concept implies the harmony of economy and environment, achieved due to the support for the SDGs in the economy. This book is original due to its reconsidering the environmental sustainability of the economy from the position of crises. The theoretical significance of the book consists in the development of an anti-crisis approach to the provision of the environmental sustainability of the economy: responsible nature use based on digital markets and smart governance. The proprietary approach allows for the comprehensive description of the potential of the leading technologies¿artificial intelligence (AI), robots, the Internet of Things (IoT), and blockchain¿to support¿during their use in smart governance¿crisis management of the environmental sustainability of economy. The book¿s practical significance is due to the description and detailed discussion of the modern international experience of responsible nature use given the specifics of developed and developing countries. The anti-crisis approach to the provision of the environmental sustainability of the economy is based on digital markets: FinTech, EdTech, GovTech, AgroTech, and EnergyTech, the practice of which is described in the book with the help of multiple examples from the international experience and case studies. The book is aimed at scholars who study environmental economics. In this book, they find an innovative view of the environmental sustainability of the economy in its close connection with economic crises.
