This book provides an overview of sleep and sleep disorders for practicing clinicians. Sleep disorders represent a major portion of the chief complaints seen by pulmonologists and other clinicians. Patients with sleep-related conditions often present with non-specific complaints that require a broad and detailed knowledge of the wide range of sleep disorders and their consequences. This concise, evidence-based review of sleep medicine offers a guide to pulmonologists, primary care physicians, and all clinicians involved in caring for patients with sleep disorders. Providing a focused, scientific basis for the effects of sleep on human physiology, especially cardiac and respiratory physiology, chapters also outline a differential diagnosis for common sleep complaints and an evidence-based approach to diagnosis and management. This includes a review of the current standards of practice and of emerging technology and unresolved issues awaiting further research. In all, this book provides a clear diagnostic and management program for all the different sleep disorders and includes key points and summaries. This new edition expands the scope of the previous to include additional sleep disorders and the most affected populations. Six new chapters are added on health disparities in sleep medicine, models of care for patients with sleep disorders/care coordination, sleep disordered breathing in pediatric populations, sleep in hospitalized patients, sleep in pregnancy, and sleep in older patients.Essentials of Sleep Medicine is an invaluable resource for physicians, clinical psychologists, respiratory care practitioners, polysomnographic technologists, graduate students, clinical researchers, and other health professionals seeking an in-depth review of sleep medicine.

Synchrony is the ability of a healthcare process to control the pace of the physician process and the pace of the patient process such that the physician and patient are ready for each other at the same time, without waste or delay. When a process achieves synchrony, the patient does not wait for the doctor, nor does the doctor wait for the patient.Dr. Dennis Han is an ophthalmologist specializing in diseases of the retina at the Medical College of Wisconsin and Froedtert Memorial Hospital; Aneesh Suneja is an engineer and lean consultant who worked with Dr. Han to transform his practice. With the help of Suneja, Han's patients experienced an 85% reduction in non-value added wait times, and a corresponding 97% "top box" rating on patient satisfaction surveys ("strongly agree to recommend this doctor's office to others"). Financially, his practice saw a 25% year-over-year increase in relative value units (RVU) production and a 41% increase in payments due to increased physician availability. If you are a physician, clinic manager, administrator, technician, or provider of health services in a clinic setting, you can use the guidelines described in this book to effect a transformation as well."Thank you, doctor Dennis Han, MD, and co-author Aneesh Suneja, MBA, for this marvelous work that applies Lean principles in healthcare settings. The focus on physician medical clinics is a brave venture into this complex, hectic world that has traditionally been dominated by physicians with a predominant emphasis on patient volume, and subsequent billing volume, versus caring for their customers... This important work is essential for just about all existing physician clinics." Dale Farris Healthcare quality improvement specialist with 25 years experience."Lean principles have opened up more slots for patient care allowing better clinic and staff utilization, and have increased patient throughput while reducing employee overhead and burnout. There is a joy on the faces of the staff when they get to leave the office earlier than expected because lean principles have been deployed." Jose Martinez, MD Practicing physician and beneficiary of the "Synchrony" "Physician office managers and their medical staffs would be the primary targets for this book. However, I also see it being applicable to the higher educational setting...[such as in colleges and institutions teaching healthcare improvement.]" Jim Bente Vice President, Planning and Institutional Effectiveness, College of duPage Adjunct Faculty, Carnegie Mellon University

Safe drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene are crucial to human health and wellbeing. These factors are a prerequisite to health since they play a crucial role in preventing the transmission of numerous waterborne pathogens and chemical contaminants. Another important factor that can affect people's health is air pollution. Special attention needs to be paid to developing countries, as these factors not only affect human health but also contribute to livelihoods, school attendance, and dignity and help create resilient communities living in healthy environments. This book provides insights into different aspects of hygiene, sanitation, water, and air pollution and their potential correlation with infectious diseases and human health. It also addresses important challenges and opportunities for improvement in developing countries. These are priority areas in which the world's leading health and humanitarian organizations, such as the WHO and UNICEF, are working intensively.
The term "health literacy" was used for the first time in 1974 at a conference on health education and social policy; its definition has evolved over time to encompass both the patient's understanding and their ability to process and interpret the health information they receive. The WHO defines health literacy as "the social and cognitive skills that determine the level of motivation and the ability of a person to access, understand and use information in a way that allows them to promote and maintain good health". Literacy in health not only means that the person understands the information that the health professional gives them or that comes to them but also implies that they know how to identify accurate and appropriate information, how to interpret and judge this information, and are able to apply it according to individual circumstances and needs.

Around a quarter of the world's population is affected by iron deficiency, and women of childbearing age as well as children and adolescents are considered a particular risk group. This reference book deals with the latest scientific findings concerning the iron supply of the human organism with natural foods. It dispels the misconception that plant iron is less valuable than animal iron by presenting the absorption of iron from plant foods via a newly discovered metabolic pathway. From this, new points of view can be derived for vegetarians and vegans, who until now have belonged to the risk group. Furthermore, it is dedicated to forward-looking possibilities of diagnosing iron deficiency and describes modern concepts for determining the bioavailability of iron in food. New findings on the biochemistry of iron in brain metabolism, the description of the different reference values of the international professional societies and practical advice for special diets, risk groups and age groups as well as cooking recipes with simple information on iron intake complete the work. The book is aimed at nutritionists and medical practitioners, nutrition and food scientists, dieticians, pharmacists and sports scientists.

This book offers basic knowledge on Design Thinking as a method, process and philosophy. It presents thoughtful Design Thinking case examples and tools for nurses and other healthcare professionals, researchers, students and educators to support their development as creative and transformative leaders in their fields.Healthcare managers of the past viewed patients¿ needs merely as targets for population-level health outcomes to be validated in the final phases of developing interventions and services. Today we know better. Patients¿ needs and experiences should be viewed as sources of innovation at the front-end of the development process. It provides the basis for applying design thinking to develop better healthcare services and health tech applications.Today, the success of any healthcare service depends on complex interactions between various stakeholders, and new solutions can only be delivered effectively through co-creative and collaborative efforts. Coordinating such efforts relies on strong concepts that can only result from properly run design processes, that this book describes in light of case studies around the world.Design thinking is crucial generalist skill and is receiving increasing attention in the field, as forward-thinking organizations delve into the practice. It can change the way medical solutions are created and how clinical services are delivered. By driving innovation by means of empathy and practicality, design thinking provides tools for those seeking to drive radical renewal in the field.
