A wide-ranging study of empire, religious prophecy, and nationalism in literature, Russia's Rome: Imperial Visions, Messianic Dreams, 1890-1940 provides the first examination of Russia's self-identification with Rome during a period that encompassed the revolutions of 1905 and 1917 and the rise of the Soviet state. Analyzing Rome-related texts by Dmitrii Merezhkovskii, Valerii Briusov, Aleksandr Blok, Viacheslav Ivanov, Mikhail Kuzmin, and Mikhail Bulgakov, Judith Kalb argues that the myth of Russia as the "Third Rome" was resurrected to create an enduring Rome-based discourse of Russian national identity. Russia's Rome fills a gap in both Russian studies and scholarship on the classical tradition, providing valuable material for scholars of Russian culture and history, classicists, and readers interested in the classical heritage.

This book explores the relationship between "the roles of the Black ¿organic intellectual¿ and the PoC academic scholar, and outlines how important partnerships are emerging from these sometimes-contrasting decolonial praxes. By blending the decolonial processes of Indigenous rights via a liberation Psychology lens, Brazilian critical race scholarship and UK African diasporic collective consciousness via intersectional critical race studies, the authors provide a clear theoretical framework to show how a decolonised multi-layered community epistemology can be produced by the community for the community that in praxis form, can be employed for the fight for social justice within those communities.
Devilry, Deviance, and Public Sphere draws on criminology and social theory to explore and expand social historical themes in the analysis of perceptions of deviance and crime in the eighteenth century. Developing the theoretical device of Folk Devils and Moral Panics, instigated by Stanley Cohen and developed by Erich Goode and Nachman Ben-Yehuda, the book explores the social discovery of, and public response to, crime and deviance in that period. Detailed contemporary case studies of youth violence, sexual deviance, and substance abuse are used to argue that Hanoverian London and its novel media can be identified as the initiating historical site for what might now be termed public order moral panics. In doing so, Hamerton provides a vivid historical lineage of moral panic which traverses much of the long eighteenth century. The book considers social change, allowing for points of theoretical convergence and divergence to be observed, whilst exploring historical models of public opinion, media, deviance and crime alongside the unique character and power located within the burgeoning Metropolis. Devilry, Deviance, and Public Sphere seeks to make an important contribution to the understanding of both moral panic theory and the historiography of crime and deviance, and posits that the current discourse on folk devils and moral panics can be extended and enriched via the exploration of the moral crises of earlier centuries.
This book shows how the police functioned in the cities of the Napoleonic Empire. Shifting attention away from political repression, it focuses on the men who embodied this institution and made it work day-to-day. Based on extensive archival research, the book shows how the Napoleonic police were indeed an instrument of power, but also a profession and a service to the public. Traditionally associated with the image of Joseph Fouche and with political surveillance, the Napoleonic police, when studied from the local level, thus reveals itself to be much more complex and oriented simultaneously towards both the preservation of the regime and maintaining good urban order.

In this small book, Paul Le Blanc tries to 'make sense of the Russian invasion of Ukraine'. His starting point is for a victory for Ukrainian self-determination and opposition to imperialism in all its forms.
This book explores the prevailing role of rites of passage, ritual, and ceremony in contemporary children's lives through the lens of modern-day incarnations of uniformed youth movements. It focuses on the socialising ritual and customary practices of present-day grass-roots Scout and Guide groups, asking how Britain's largest and best-known uniformed youth organisations employ ritualised activities to express their values to their young members through language and gesture, story and song, dress, and physical artifacts. The author shows that these practices exist against a backdrop of culturally-constructed beliefs about what constitutes the 'good child' and 'good childhood' in twenty-first century Britain, with in-movement practices intended to help children develop positively and prepare for social life. The book draws on case study accounts of group performances, incorporating the voices of children and adults reflecting on their practices and experiences.

Simon M. Dubnow's "Jewish History: An Essay in the Philosophy of History" is a seminal work that explores the history of the Jewish people from a unique philosophical perspective. Dubnow, a historian and Jewish scholar, wrote this book to offer not just a chronological account of events but also to present a philosophical and interpretative understanding of Jewish history. Key features of the book include: Philosophical Approach: Dubnow introduces a distinctive philosophy of history, often referred to as "Autonomism." This perspective emphasizes the uniqueness of the Jewish historical experience, asserting that Jewish history follows its own distinct trajectory and principles. Chronological Overview: While offering a philosophical lens, Dubnow also provides a chronological overview of Jewish history, spanning from ancient times to the contemporary period (the book was first published in 1903, so the contemporary period at that time covered the early 20th century). Key Themes: The book explores essential themes in Jewish history, including the dispersion of the Jewish people, their relationship with different cultures and nations, and the evolution of Jewish communal structures. Cultural and Religious Developments: Dubnow delves into the cultural and religious developments within the Jewish community, examining how these aspects shaped the identity and resilience of the Jewish people over time. Diaspora Experience: The author emphasizes the unique aspect of the Jewish diaspora experience, highlighting the cultural and social dynamics that enabled the Jewish community to maintain a distinct identity despite residing in various regions. Impact on Jewish Thought: "Jewish History" has had a profound impact on the study of Jewish history and thought. Dubnow's Autonomism became influential, and his work paved the way for further exploration of the philosophy of Jewish history. Legacy: Dubnow's book remains an important and influential work in Jewish historiography. While some aspects of his philosophy have been debated, his contribution to the understanding of Jewish history has left a lasting legacy. "Jewish History: An Essay in the Philosophy of History" is not only a historical survey but also a philosophical exploration that seeks to understand the distinctive nature of Jewish historical development. It continues to be a thought-provoking and influential work in the field of Jewish studies.
Child survivors of the Armenian Genocide, jewish child survivors of the Holocaust, non-jewish slavic children, and war children of the Second World WarEHS Volume 5 presents child-oriented research approaches by scholars from the fields of Holocaust Studies, Genocide Studies, and Second World War History. The authors highlight key concepts of Childhood Studies, arguing that children are historical actors with their own ideas, identity-forming experiences, and agency. The contributions demonstrate the importance of children`s accounts of war and postwar experiences for deeper understanding of the history of war and society in the twentieth century. The volume showcases a variety of children`s voices including child survivors of the Armenian Genocide, Jewish child survivors of the Holocaust, non-Jewish Slavic children, and war children of the Second World War by utilising testimonies from lesser-known archival and oral history collections.Includes:Edita Gzoyan: Forcibly Transferred and Assimilated: Experiences of Armenian Children during the Armenian Genocide.Dieter Steinert: Echoes from Hell: Jewish Child Forced Labourers and the Holocaust.Oksana Vynnyk: Surviving Starvation in Soviet Ukraine: Children and Soviet Healthcare in the early 1930s.
"On September 1, 1939, the dark clouds descending on Jews everywhere, especially on the Jews of Poland, quickly enveloped the Jews of Tishevits (as Jews called Tyszowce in Yiddish). Every Tishevits Jew was consumed with deathly fear by the question: Where to run to?"So it is recorded in this Yizkor book. At the outbreak of World War II, there were about 3,800 Jews in Tyszowce. The German army occupied the town at the beginning of October 1939. In May 1942, about 1,000 Jews were deported to the Belzec death camp. The Jewish community was liquidated in November 1942, when the remaining Jews were sent to the same camp. After the war the Jewish community of Tyszowce was not reconstituted. The history of Tyszowce dates back to the Middle Ages. Located in "Lesser Poland" for close to 500 years it was in the Lublin province near the crossroads of Volhynia and Ukraine. The town was surrounded by rushing rivers, dark forests, swampy peat bogs, and sun-dazzled sands. Throughout the generations, the town was occupied by Cossacks, Russians and Tatars, and also burnt to the ground several times. Its craftsmen were renowned for their boot-making. Tyszowce old-timers said that the name Tishevits came from the Polish words "Tu szewcow" which means, "Here are shoemakers." They produced a special kind of boot known as Tishavanes. The boots were sewn together by hand using only soft leather, even for the soles. There was no difference between the left or right boot. Every farmer knew how to make such boots, and in the winter when there was no outdoor fieldwork, they used to make the boots for their own use, as well as for sale.In peaceful times, the book describes Tishevits as a shtetl that lived without commotion, without clamor. Everyone worked hard to earn enough for bread and challah for Shabbat. With their last pennies, they sent their children to cheder, yeshivah, and did hard physical labor to be able to marry their children off with proper respect."But everything was annihilated all at once," it laments, "killed off violently, and from the whole shtetl, nothing was left but a mass grave somewhere in the forests..." May this book serve as a memorial to the Jewish town, its people can the Jewish community that was so brutally destroyed.
This book focuses on the rise of Kurdish nationalism in northwestern Iran in the context of the emergence of the Kurdish leader, Ismail Agha Simko, who organized a movement to establish a Kurdish state between 1918 and 1922 The rise of Simko is analyzed in the historical framework of the collapse of the Russian and Ottoman empires, as well as the disappearance of Iranian governmental authority in various provinces of the country during and after the end of the First World War. The book also investigates the impact of Iranian, Turkish, and Assyrian nationalisms on Simko and his movement. Drawing upon original documents, the author provides an in-depth analysis of the political, and socio-economic causes for the rise of proto-Kurdish nationalism in northwestern Iran during and after the Great War.
